SALAMANCA PLACE:

Salamanca Place is located at Sullivans Cove on  Hobart’s historic waterfront comprising of a  long row of stylish Georgian sandstone warehouses built in the 1830s. The buildings now house boutiques, bars, bookshops, restaurants, outdoor cafes, art studios, craft galleries and jewellers. Each Saturday there’s the famous market, where you can buy anything from a handmade wooden toy to a handspun, hand-knitted sweater to a fresh peach to a 50-year-old china plate. Across the road there are green lawns and park benches shaded by plane trees that twinkle with lights in the evenings.

Behind Salamanca Place is Salamanca Square, where you can sit by the cooling fountain with a cup of coffee and a muffin and listen to a guitar or a flute player before visiting Antarctic Adventure. You’ll want to spend hours in here, doing electronic seal-counts, learning the history of Antarctic exploration, enduring the bitter winds and freezing snow and feeling all the sensations of hurtling down a mountainside on skis.

Sullivans Cove is recognised as having s ome of the oldest buildings in Hobart. Where fishing boats lay in the picturesque docks and fish punts sell the freshest of fish. Take a walk round the cove and admire the elegant colonial architecture and sandstone buildings. The old warehouses of Salamanca Place are a magnet for anyone looking for a cup of good coffee, a delicious snack or meal, a piece of handmade jewellery, a secondhand book,  a sweater knitted from handspun wool or some artwork or souvenirs from the huge selection of Gifts shops and Galleries.
