Health and Safety

Health and safety issues are major concerns for every manager. Although we never think something could happen in our workplace, (especially if you work in an office environment) accidents, ill health, workplace violence and acts of nature occur every day.

Do you know what to do if a customer suddenly has a heart attack in your office or place of business?

Do you know first aid or CPR? Do your employees?

If there's an accident and an employee is suffering severe bleeding and/or shock, how would you handle it?

Every manager should be trained how to handle these types of situations.

Ensure your employees are trained also. It might mean the difference between life and death.

Safety issues have become a real concern for all workers and especially for those in government service. Not only must we be concerned about potentially violent customers, but we now must also be aware of possible terrorist attacks of various types.

Additionally, managers must be prepared to handle any and all situations that arise; such as fire, tornado, flooding, chemical release, injuries to employees or customers, workplace violence, etc.

Every agency will have plans for emergency situations and all personnel should be properly trained in their agency procedures. This article is intended to provide supplemental information for managers and supervisors. Safety issues, and how to handle them, need to be addressed by both the managers and employees.

Where do you go when a tornado threatens?

What procedures would you follow if a bomb threat was received?

If there was a chemical spill in your area, would you evacuate?
