Bomb Threats
Bomb Threat:
Most agencies have a bomb threat checklist to be followed in cases of telephone threats. Be sure to use any checklist provided by your agency.
- The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recommends that you record the following information:
Write out the message exactly as received;
time of the call;
male or female caller;
identity of caller;
estimated age;
whether it's a long distance, local call or called from within the building;
caller's voice (loud, raspy, fast, stutter, soft, pleasant, slow, nasal, intoxicated, distinct, foul, high pitched, deep, distorted, accent, other);
language (excellent, good, fair, poor);
manner (calm, angry, irrational, rational, deliberate, emotional, righteous, laughing, incoherent);
background noise (office, machines, trains, animals, music, party, traffic, airplanes, voices, TV, quiet, other).
- Ask the caller where the bomb in located, what it looks like and when it is expected to detonate.
- Also record the date, the phone number called, your name and the name of your agency.
- After the caller hangs up, leave your phone off the hook.
- Use another phone to immediately call 911, the local police, Ohio State Highway Patrol (if you work for a state agency), and the security department of your agency.
If directed to do so by the local police department, begin evacuation procedures.
