Workplace Violence

Workplace Violence is one of the fastest growing categories of crime being tracked by the FBI. It is described as being an incident in which an employee or employer is threatened, intimidated, verbally or physically attacked, harassed, injured or killed on the job.

Reasons for workplace violence include work-related conflicts, personal conflicts, domestic violence, robbery, revenge for being fired or passed over for a promotion or raise, disgruntled customer, a stalker's obsession, terrorism, or displaced anger. Recognizing the potential for workplace violence and developing a prevention plan can ensure a safer workplace.

Studies show that nearly all violent incidents by employees are the result of long-simmering problems that have been ignored by management. Violent employees usually have a history of violent and disruptive behavior before they actually erupt.

Intervention, in the form of counseling, discipline, mediation or termination, must take place. Ignoring the warning signs is the worst way to respond to potential violence.
