December 20th 2007: Water Bottles:- Remember to bring your own & place on the end wall near the snack bar during practice. Do the Stretch- We would like everyone to be a part of this activity whether you do a little or a lot of stretching during this time. It's also often used as a discussion time with items that we all need to be informed about. "Track":- We do not call out "Track" as often as we used to due to the use of the NIRA track pattern. Most passing can take place without this call BUT when and if it is called please remember to move to the wall asap. Other than that - hold your line and people can pass you. Starting on Time- We do appreciate beginning our practices on time or as soon as the floor is ready. Some of you arrive in plenty of time but tend to socialize before getting ready to skate. Please get ready to skate first - that way there should be no waiting for the group to assemble. "B to A"- We plan on trying to give some of our Sunday B group skaters - (by coach invitation to participate) in part of an A group practice. As skaters in the B group are ready to transition to a more demanding experience we may also ask a few of the "A" skaters to spend some time in the "B" group practice to offer them the experience of speed skating in a larger group. Roller Sports Canada (RSC) Membership Renewal Due- All clubs members are required to renew their RSC membership in order to continue to skate the Scooter's Speed Club practices. CIC 2007 Part A Competition Rules - Article 18 General Rules p.11 2) Competitors are to reach the finish line along the shortest imaginary line, without loops or lateral deviations. 3) In no case, shall the passing of other athletes cause difficulty to other competitors. 4) In no case can athletes push other competitors or cut in front of them. Where's Munro? Munro one of our members and a club director is spending the Canadian winter months in Mexico. I think he took his skates with him! Floor Cleaning: Thank you to those who help in this chore before each practice. We have come up with a protocol to try and establish some consistency in how it should be done. Please see below; *Practices will be much more enjoyable and safer with a better grip surface. *This allows passing to happen smoothly at higher speeds with less danger of sliding out into another skater. Thorough cleaning should take 20-25mins. Time taken into the actual practice time to clean the floor will not be made up after the official practice time ends. Dry sweep the whole surface with two 'mops with blue sweeping rags' a minimum of 2 times [check blue sweeping rag condition after each run, flip to a new surface on the rag after each complete run]. Dry sweep a minimum of 1 time the track area [check rag, if still dusty, sweep track again]. Do not take the vinegar - water 60/40 mix on the floor until all dust is removed as it creates a surface that is even more slippery at high speed than dust alone. Lay out cones close to their markers to outline the track for the 'vinegar' sweep. Apply vinegar water 60/40 mix to towels and clean corners and straights separately, TRACK ONLY. (Start 6 inches inside the cone markers). Repeat 'vinegar'- clean, sweep once again. (Do not throw the Vinegar water mix plastic jug with the holes in the lid out as it can be refilled and used as needed). Dampen wheel cleaning cloths and place on wall next to chairs. Exactly how Omni will proceed we do not know however we should expect that they many do interviews. Arrive earlier than usual . Plan to be there at 7:00pm instead of 7:30pm. Start the floor cleaning early so that this is out of the way and the mops etc are packed away and not visible at the end of the rink. Plan to be skates on the floor for 8:00pm. If you are under the camera light realize that you skin suit will be pretty thin. Move the vinegar bottle and towels behind the wall . We are having trouble with the mats. (bring running shoes and appropriate workout attire, (shorts+T-shirt),towel,water bottle, and small snack to eat). Lets make use of this time we have early Sunday mornings. This is a great opportunity to begin to introduce dryland training into your training. Many technical flaws are simply the result of a lack of specific strength. Dryland is the fastest & most effective way to address& fix these issues. December 16 2005- Our first extended practice for Children,Novice and Intermediate will happen this Sunday December 18th. March 2 2004: "The change in ownership is effective March 26, 2004. We are unsure as to what will happen next month. Dave Mathews has been asked by the new owners to take over the lease and managemement of the Forum. The viability of this arrangement is currently being investigated. We are hopeful that a suitable arrangement can be made to continue operation of the Forum. The decision will likely be made in the next week or two. Activities at The Forum for the month of March will continue as normal, and there should be no problems concerning Indoor Speed Provincials. In the meantime however, a back-up plan will be needed for Indoor Speed Nationals currently planned for April 3rd & 4th." "To clarify -the Plaza in which The Forum is located was sold." And from David Mathews March 3 2004: "The situation is that the Plaza the Forum is in, not the Forum business, has sold from 1 partner to the other via a 'shot gun' clause.....I have been approach by the old and new owners, both, to take over the business entirely and sign a new lease with the new ownership...I am putting together a new group to attempt to do this and will hopefully be successful over the next week or so as things a re going well so far....So, if the new plaza owner cooperates we should be in control after March 26th..." Place the water bottle on the wall at the assembly area near the entry or exit area or wall nearest the snack bar. This should reduce the reason(s) for leaving the floor once practice begins. They prefer that everyone remain on the floor for the entire practice. Suitable Clothing: Our instructors prefer that you wear a skin suit if you have one or racing jersey and racing - (spandex - cycle type) pant. Tee shirt and racing - (spandex - cycle type) pant is also fine. Please do not wear the longer "fluid" basketball type pant. Any concerns - speak to Aaron or Peter.
