First reading                 Bill is Introduced
Second reading             A debate takes place on the principals of the bill. A vote takes place and                                           only if a majority votes 'Aye' can the bill go forward
Committee Stage           A committee goes through the bill clause by clause, line by line. Changes                                         to wording are usually made at this stage
Report Stage                 A debate takes place to consider the changes
Third Reading               Another debate takes place on the amended bill
House of Lords             Bill goes through similar stages at Lords
Royal Ascent                A representative of the Queen signs the bill making it an act of    parliament,                                     the law of the land

Why people do not join a trade union
in some companies there are no organised trade unions
well paid workers see no need to join a trade union
part-time workers find membership fees too high
