Ms.
Elizabeth Lopez is Roosevelt Alternative School’s
social worker. She works mainly with girls in the Teen Parenting
Assistance Program. Ms. Lopez states, “I primarily work with pregnant
teens and teen parents. An assessment of the student’s needs is
conducted as soon as a referral is received. Those needs may be
academic, medical, housing, transportation, day care, clothing, etc. I
employ a holistic approach which embraces family and community in
assisting our children. Counseling sessions are scheduled with their
family when deemed necessary. I work closely with all secondary schools
and community agencies. My goal is to support the student in every
manner possible to facilitate the teen mother’s learning.
The three teachers in the TPAP wing, Mrs. Zey, Mrs.
Correa, and Mrs. Perryman are dedicated to teaching their students
skills that will stay with them for life.
Mrs. Zey is the English, History, and Parenting
teacher. She teaches all levels of English and History. Her main focus
is to prepare students for graduation, and hopefully further education.
Mrs. Zey states, “TPAP students also learn about themselves, about
infants and children, and how to nurture their children as they grow. In
their parenting classes, TPAP students learn basic parenting skills such
as feeding, diapering, playing, and infant massage. “
Mrs. Correa is the math/science teacher. She also
teaches homebound students when the need arises. She says, “Students
start each math class by first doing a mathersize activity as an opener
for this subject. The I proceed to enhance their knowledge by either
reinforcing previous skills or challenging them with new material. In
science I teach that science is very important in every area of a
student’s life.” Mrs. Correa stresses that a healthy lifestyle
combined with a good education, will make every student a well rounded
person.

Mrs. Perryman is our homebound
teacher and works with the students when they are either late in their
term or have just had their baby. She teaches all subjects and is in
close contact with the students’ home campus to ensure they earn the
credits needed to graduate. She is often on the road going from one
student’s home to the next helping the student continue their
education even while at home.
Homebound services require four hours class
attendance. This allows students to maintain perfect attendance while at
home.
Mrs.
Correa teaches science and math in the Teen Parenting Assistance
Program. She has been with Roosevelt Alternative School for three years
now and is important to the function of the TPAP wing.
Mrs.
Zey teaches history, English and parenting skills in the Teen Parenting Assistance
Program. While teaching only half a day her enthusiasm
and boundless energy promotes a feeling of well-being and energy to the
TPAP wing.
Mrs.
Perryman is our homebound teacher working with teen parents. While her specialty
is math she must often teach other curriculum to our homebound students
including parenting skills.
