SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

The laws of Texas require you to attend school every day.  If a student fails to comply with this law, he/she will be referred to the District Attendance Office, who may refer the student to the Justice Court.  The Court may make the student's parents subject to a fine.  In order to receive credit for the assigned time at school, you must be present and on time for school every day.  Breakfast will be served in the cafeteria from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.  If the student arrives in the cafeteria at 8:30 a.m. or after, he/she will not have time to eat and will be considered tardy.  Any student arriving on campus after 8:30 a.m., must report to the school office for an admittance slip, and an additional day will be added to their assignment to Roosevelt Alternative School.

If there is a valid reason for you to be absent, your parent/legal guardian must call the school before 9:30 a.m. and notify us of your absence and the reason for your absence.  A student required to attend school may be excused for temporary absence resulting from any cause acceptable to the teacher, principal, or superintendent of the school.  In the event that an absence is excused, the student must provide a note, signed by his/her parent or guardian stating the reason for the students absence and will be required to make up the time.  If the absence is un-excused the student is required to make-up the time AND an extra day will be added to the student's stay at Roosevelt Alternative School.

STUDENTS LEAVING THE CAMPUS WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION FROM THE PRINCIPAL OR A NURSE WILL RECEIVE AN UN-EXCUSED ABSENCE AND MAY BE SUBJECT TO DISCIPLINARY ACTION.

As a result of any absence or tardy, the parents may be expected to come in for a conference with the principal.

CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION

Roosevelt Alternative School focuses on developing student potential for success by using student-based outcomes to adapt curriculum content, instructional strategies, and student products.  Because Instruction is paced to learner needs and goals, students can meet or exceed traditional subject learner objectives. Our students will learn social skills, problem-solving and critical thinking skills and self-directed learning.  The school offers courses in Science, Mathematics, Language Arts, and Social Studies.  The improvement of reading skills is a priority.  In addition, we have provided for a daily outside activity period for which a student may receive PE credit.  Student's participation in this activity will be based on the student's level of cooperation and commitment to their academic responsibilities. Qualifying students may be placed in non-traditional courses and assigned course work in the American Preparatory Institute curriculum.

ACCELERATED READER

While enrolled at Roosevelt Alternative school, the student will read and complete two books per week at his/her reading level.  Out of the two required readings, the student must successfully pass one test at a grade of 85 or higher.  The student will read his/her accelerated reader book during the first ten minutes of each class period, for a total of 60 minutes  of reading time per day.  At the teacher's discretion, the student may read his/her accelerated book when he/she finishes all class work.  The student must complete required  documentation of the book he/she is reading.  Documentation will be written on an accelerated reader summary form before he/she is allowed to test on the book.  A student who successfully completes more than the required one test per week, will receive 100 points in vouchers for each additional test he/she successfully completes during the week.  Only two book exchanges per week will be allowed.

TRANSPORTATION

Student automobiles will not be allowed on this campus.  The Alternative school student will walk to school, may be transported to and from school by his parents, or the student may ride the bus.  Students assigned to bus transportation will be required to board the bus everyday.   Should the student's parent choose to have the student walk home, the parent must notify the school principal in advance.  Only the parent or a person designated by the parent will be authorized to pick a student up from school.

Roosevelt Alternative School students are not to leave a specifically assigned area or the school campus at anytime with written authorization by the principal or his designee.  Bus student will be directed to the bus area at the proper time where you will remain until you board your assigned bus.  If you leave this area for any reason without permission, your bus privileges will be revoked.  Any mis-behavior on the bus will also result in loss of your privileges.

PRESCRIBED MEDICINE

Prescribe medicine that must be administered during the school day, must be provided to the school.  A permission form must be signed by the parent if a student is to take prescribed medicine.  The prescribed medicine must be in it's original bottle.  For the safety of the student we will not administer medicine that is not in it's original container.

Staff members keep in close communication at all times here at Roosevelt Alternative School.  Here Ms. Lopez and Mr. Sparrgrove are discussing how better to move students from class to class.
