Saskatchewan Represented By QVSC Athletes At International Races
Two members of the Qu'Appelle Valley Ski Club traveled to Whistler, B.C. for the Whistler Cup, an international ski racing event featuring the best juvenile aged athletes from all over the world.  Kara Delaney and Brady Achtymichuk, the top female and male juveniles in Saskatchewan, competed in Super Giant Slalom (SG), Giant Slalom (GS) and slalom (SL) races.  Kara competed against 72 other girls while Brady was up against 86 other males.  Kara's results were 52nd in SG, 57th in GS and 40th in SL.  Brady finished 45 in SG and 51st in GS, and disappointingly did not finish in SL.  When one considers these results have come against the world's best for their age, Brady and Kara should be very happy with their results.  All in all the Whistler Cup is a fantastic experience and a worthwhile goal for any young racer.

Alpine Race Team Holds Awards Banquet
QVSC's Alpine Race Team decided to try something a little different this year by having a separate banquet to honour their own.  It was decided that since we had so many athletes away at various competitions in March that the awards be done when the whole Alpine Race Team could attend.  This was obviously a great decision as all 25 members were able to attend which made the whole evening seem quite special, especially with everyone dressed up!
The Country Squire Inn's Luxton Room was the site for the evening's activities with Garth Hollinger acting as the Master of Ceremonies.  Oliver Engel gave grace and everyone enjoyed the wonderful meal put forth by the Squire.  As people were finishing their food, Garth began the program with some jokes, which seemed to be mostly aimed at Kirk!  Next, Calvin Reed, QVSC's past president gave some comments in which he thanked our sponsors that were in attendance and gave recognition to the past seasons coaches.
Qu'Appelle Valley Ski Club's Head Coach, Kirk Cochrane was then called upon to present the Alpine Race Team (A.R.T.) and their coaches.  He gave a power point presentation featuring the accomplishments of each A.R.T. member from this previous season.  Kirk then introduced those on the team who are in Grade 12 this year and may have raced their last for QVSC.  As Kirk reminded them that they are more than welcome to continue racing as long as they desire, they were presented with framed action pictures from the whole club as appreciation for staying with the team throughout their high school years.  Gary Delaney, Sask Alpine president then presented the new Sask Cup plaque for the Provincial Club Champion to the five Grade 12 athletes - Rachelle Hollinger, Danny Ottenbreit, Adam Fenwick, Chris Reid and Greg Godwin.
Kirk then announced this years recipients of the QVSC Alpine Race Team awards and Don Williams, co-owner of Mission Ridge Winter Park presented the winners with the annual plaque and a keeper trophy.  This years winners were as follows:

As noted, the Crash of the Year award was also presented this evening.  Kirk noted that the girls seemed to dominate this category this year and he mentioned several crashes that stood out in his mind like Yolandi Lombard hitting a gate judge in a GS race, Rhiannon Jones ending her season with a knee injury at Timber Ridge and Brittany Mooney's many, many, many wipe-outs on the same hip on one weekend.  As everyone watched Kristen Solvey's crash on the big screen, Kirk announced Kristen's Asessippi GS crash and Allysen Reed's face plant over the last jump at the duals as the 2002 Crash of the Year honorees!
The evening wrapped up with the Grade 12 graduates putting on a hilarious skit that Danny Ottenbreit had written.  The skit had Danny, Adam and Chris portraying their depictions of the QVSC Alpine Race Team coaches giving feedback to Greg and Rachelle as they came through a training course.  This time, Cory and John seemed to get the most abuse!  Excellent job Grade 12's, we all enjoyed your act a lot, thank you.  Finally, presentations and gifts were given to the coaching staff and everyone said their farewells to another very successful season.
