August 24 to September 2, 2001
Season Starts On A Glacier
Seven athletes from QVSC began the new season very early this year by attending a ski camp on the glacier at Mount Hood, Oregon.  Aaron and Adam Fenwick, Brady Achtymichuk, Kara Delaney, Allysen Reed, Rachelle Hollinger and Brittany Simmons, along with six other athletes from throughout Saskatchewan, took part in this camp organized by Sask Alpine.  Mike Flowers of Fall Line Racing was the head coach while QVSC's head coach, Kirk Cochrane assisted him.  Bruce Willard from Regina came along as the chaperone and provided most of the driving for this long trek, thanks Bruce from everyone involved.
The day started very early as the best skiing was in the early hours before the snow got too soft.  Everyone was up early enough to have a short warm-up run, eat breakfast, load the van and take the short drive up the mountain to be able to get on the chairlift by 7:30 a.m.  The days were spent doing various free ski drills with the boys skiing with Mike and the girls with Kirk for the first three days on snow.  The groups switched coaches for the last three days.  Unfortunately, Mt. Hood had less snow for the summer than anyone could remember so there was a bit more hiking involved to get to the snow, but it was still great to be skiing in August!  The days were very warm and sunny and the snow got quite mushy very quickly so everyone was off the mountain by 1:00 p.m.  It was then back to our cabin for lunch and a nap before doing the afternoon activities which included rollerblading, capture the flag, swimming, etc.  Adam and Aaron provided quite a bit of entertainment rollerblading and did very well not to kill themselves!
After the first three days everyone was ready for a break, so the van was loaded and an excursion to Portland was provided.  Everyone toured around downtown Portland for awhile, then most of the athletes took part in a great battle of paintball!
It was more of the same for the last three days of skiing and the weather again cooperated - until the last day, when with most anticipating more bright sunny weather, the mountain gave us rain and wind which made for a shortened last day.  The miserable weather did make us appreciate how nice the first five days had been!

Mt. Hood looking very barren.

Taking a snack break.

Slalom training on rollerblades.

Wet and cold on top of Mt. Hood.

Fall 2001
Getting in Shape With Dryland Training
Dryland training got off to a bit of a late start this season due to the very mild temperatures in the fall, it seems most people preferred to be outside rather than in a stuffy old gymnasium, and who can blame them?  Once we did come together at the Bert Fox Community High School gym every Sunday afternoon beginning in October there was a great turnout of the younger athletes.  Kirk Cochrane conducted the workouts which focused primarily on teaching the children what kinds of exercises they should be doing to get themselves into shape for the upcoming ski season.  Each session began with stretching followed by some plyometric training, focusing more on correct body positions than intensity.  This was followed by some core strength exercises and anaerobic training.  The last half hour to forty-five minutes of each two hour session had the athletes playing some sort of game that they themselves decided on.  The focus of all sessions was on having FUN so the athletes wanted to return and learn more.

Great Snow For Annual Mountain Mileage Camp
QVSC's annual mountain mileage camp was very well attended this year with about forty athletes, chaperones and coaches taking part.  Once again we stayed at the Ribbon Creek Hostel in Kananaskis
, however, with Nakiska not yet open, we traveled to Sunshine for the first three days and were greeted with great snow conditions.
Each day started with a morning run, breakfast, then the drive to the ski area.  Once we got there Gary Delaney took the athletes from the Development Team and led them all over the mountain getting in lots of miles.  Kirk Cochrane split the Alpine Race Team members into two groups and skied and videoed one group while the other group went free skiing in search of powder and steeps and jumps, etc.  After a half day these groups exchanged places, except of course for those who became lost and had to do a lot of hiking to get back to the ski area!  So Jacques, are you still willing to follow Kelci and Kristen wherever they venture?
With the amount of travel to and from Sunshine there was not as much free time at the hostel as in previous years - time was pretty much spent preparing supper, eating, making lunches for the next day and doing homework.  One evening was spent going over the video, another was spent in Banff, and one evening most went up to Kananaskis.
QVSC extends their thanks to Engelheim Charter and driver Dave Milne for once again safely getting us to the mountains and home again.

Where are those lift tickets?

We don't need those older kids to have fun!

Deep in thought at Nakiska

Where has all the duct tape gone?
