Although I would love to
catalogue every statue in every city in Europe and beyond, sadly there
are not enough lifetimes for a single person to do this. Hence,
the following pages are a far cry from an Encyclopaedic compendium of
statuary from A to Z ; In fact in some cases I have not even been
able to locate the name of the sculptor. What they do consist of
however are statues that have impressed me as I have pottered around the
various cities of Europe. I love the various distinctive figures
which are unique to each city and the celebration of their heroes,
occasional heroines and sometimes villains { the definition of
"villain" differs from country to country }. It is also
interesting to note that in recent years the use of the traditional
bronze is being overlooked for experiments in resin and other innovative
materials.
I have tried to include many statues which are not so
well known and for the purist I will try to give as much information
as possible but you may also find meanderings down other paths for short
diversions and it is inevitable that in part it will be a travelogue and
history lesson.
Another thing which never ceases to amaze and is a part of the fascination is an absolute astonishment that the artists who create
these often exquisite works of art allow them to remain outdoors at the
mercy of acid rain, snow , wind and so forth. I can understand it
in Mediterranean climes but the Northern sculptors are truly heroes of
the art world. But the general theme is a selection of the statuary
sprinkled throughout the cities of Europe --so
enjoy.
