Trachian
Cult Complex
In
year 2000 an expedition for Thracian barrows’ studying lead
by Dr. Georgi Kitov studied magnificent Thracian cult complex built near
by village of Starosel. The discovery was declared as no.1 Archeological
event not only for the year, but also for the last century of the second
millenium. Some people perceived it as the most significant event in the
history of Thracian archaeology. The imposing temple in Chetiniova barrow and the
rich graves around it are the next proof of the exceptional artistic and
technical potentials of Thracian community – the oldest nation known by name, who
lived in the lands of present Bulgaria. The
region has its chances to become a first class tourist attraction in
Europe.
Among all elements of the Thracian cult complex near by Starosel,
unquestionably the temple has leading role. Because of that and in order to be
seen from a distance, the so-called today Chetiniova barrow is fenced round with well
polished granite blocks. Its length is 241 m and current height is 3.5 m,
while in the antiquity its height was approximately 5 m, as for the building
were used at least 5000 polished blocks. The wall outlines a circle,
symbolizing the sun, as per the Thracian religion. On southeast side the
circle is broken and in this orifice begins the front stairs leading to the
temple. It has 9 steps, made of excellent polished stone blocks and plates.
The
front stairs lead to a landing with a size enough big to be used for rite
dances. From the edge of the landing, slopes up a passage,
leading to façade of the real temple. The passage is imposing. Its
length is 10 m and its width is 6 m. The walls are impressive with a height of
5 meters. The huge stone blocks, which are used for the building, are left
coarse and make every visitor feeling small and show the greatness and the
superiority of the one for whom this temple was build. The visitor remains
surprised comparing the rough sidewalls and the fine elegance of the facade.
It was made of big, but perfectly polished blocks of softer type of stone
having green color – volcanic tuff, which was most probably brought here
from 30 km distance, not far from Strelcha, where it present.
The
first premise of the temple has rectangular shape and it is considerably
more spacious than the known so far.
The
second premise has round shape. Its diameter is 5.40 m and it is the most
specious premises in Bulgaria. It has 10 ornamental semi columns on
its periphery, made stylish by means of 9 vertical flutes. From the
up-side they finish with original, painted in blue and red capitals.

The
Thracian temple in Chetiniova
barrow is covered with temporarily protective building. It is guarded and
can be visited every day. The working time is from 8 am to 5 pm in
winter and 6 pm in summer. There are guides that provide tourists
with useful information, colored post cards, folders in Bulgarian and
English, booklets about the site and excavations, translated in several
languages.
