Oborishte
The
preparation of April Uprising in 1876 culminated in the history-making
assembly at the Oborishte, the First Bulgarian Grand National Assembly. Lying
twelve kilometers northwest of Panagyurishte, on April 13, 1876, Oborishte
welcomed the delegates of people, who gathered to express its indomitable will
to fight, and to repeat the words of the oath, “Liberty
or Death!”
Oborishte
place is situated at the foot of pick “Lisets” in Central Sredna Gora
Mountain. In this place, naturally surrounded by century-old beech forest,
during Turkish forays the nearby population hid their livestock, as it was in
naturally made cattle-shed.
The monument was designed by the
sculptor Yanko Pavlov and was erected in 1928 from a white stone. You may find
a certain symbolic in its simple ornaments. Both lightnings, which come out of
the great date, are symbolizing the attack of the intellectual fighters and
the armed people. These lightnings break five rings, symbolizing five-century
chains. The famous historian of April’s Uprising – D. Strashimirov,
prepared inscriptions and the list of the people who participated in the
Oborishte meeting. The monument is a synonym of this great event.
Each year on May 2, the grateful descendents gather on this place to honor
the memory of all who died in April’s Uprising
A memory plate on the road to
Oborishte monument tells: “Traveller! ... take down your hat and even from
afar, make a bow before you pass by."
800 m south of the place, there is a cabin Oborishte (at 605 m altitude).
The place covers area of 233.8 hectares and was proclaimed as historical
place.
