Gymnasium No. 9, Asaka, Andijan region, Uzbekistan

In 1994 9th Gymnasium was founded according to the degree of Asaka local government. The first director of the gymnasium-Salomhon Vohidjanova wanted the school to flourish, and she gathered experienced and talented teachers around her. Ranoxon Ismanova has been  ruling the gymnasium as a director since 1997. Recently our gymnasium received modern computers and Internet access from IREX. The Internet gave us an opportunity of gaining access to the world beyond Uzbekistan. Teachers can get information about new topics and ideas, and use it during their lessons. We take part in on-line forums about various topics and discuss issues with teachers and students in different regions of Uzbekistan. For example our students with the students of the School No.7 in Asaka district took part in on-line forum “EARTH DAY” and according to this project we organized an “EARTH DAY WEEK”. The importance of this project for students was to help protect our environment, by planting trees, taking care of animals and the value of nature. Another on-line forum which we participated in was about environmental protection. We discussed the problems of rats in our community and how to solve this problem. Special guests came to our school and we discussed environmental issues with them. We also use the Internet in our daily lessons. We participated in the project “The best lesson plan of the month”. And our director Ismanova Ranohon took the third place with her presentation of the geometry lesson.

On the 18th of September we had an “Internet Festival” at our gymnasium. It started at 8:00 a.m till 20:00 p.m. We invited guests and parents to our party. Students prepared some sweets and toys to sale. We had on-line and off-line activities, such as concert program, sport competitions, intellectual games for students, on-line quiz, and on-line forum with our partners from France Darren and Melanie. The theme of on-line forum was about “American Culture and Traditions”. Guests through Uzbekistan participated in this on-line forum. We had meetings with the alumnus of ACCELS Dilmurod Usmonov and Sardor Yuldashev and with the alumnus of TEA Program Abdullaeva Makhpirat. They told us about their impressions from US. We had a good time in the festival.

Bamburgh School, South Shields, Great Britain

Bamburgh School is an LEA Maintained Special School in South Tyneside catering for up to 130 pupils. Currently there are 150 pupils on the role including 11 in a special unit for children identified as having Aspergers Syndrome.

The pupil's ages range from 3 to 17 years. The full range of National Curriculum subjects are taught throughout the 4 key stages with additional support given to pupils with mild or specific learning difficulties.

The school has a commitment to inclusion and offers support to pupils currently in mainstream schools who would, without additional support from the LEA, be pupils in Bamburgh School. Parents and teachers from mainstream schools are welcomed into Bamburgh to discuss relevant issues and to exchange expertise with the staff. Medical staff, support staff and teachers are willing to share their knowledge and experience to help identify individual needs and to plan for any future educational provision. Members of Bamburgh staff are also willing to make visits to other schools for this purpose.

We are due to get a new school for easier access for pupils on wheelchairs. e.g.: wider corridors and also easier access to rooms.
