Hi Andreea,

I wanted to comment on the great project you are hosting: Not-to-Be-Missed Places. I like it very much and would like to include it in a presentation I am giving to librarians about using collaborative projects on the Internet, if I may. The presentation is in Washington, D.C. on March 11 and the conference is called Computers in Libraries 2004.

In any case, I wanted to let you know how well thought out and interesting your project appears and how useful it will be in letting students around the world learn about each other.

Dear Andreea,

My students prove to be genuinely interested and highly motivated in working on the activities provided by the Knowing Me Is Knowing You project.

Many of them continue after the English classes from their computers at home, scanning pictures, generating ideas and reading other students’ contributions. Their parents are surprised to see how much of their own time, their children gladly devote to working on this project. They find it a rich and rewarding experience.”

Andreea,

Just to give you an update on how we're doing.
The rest of the articles will be a bit longer in coming. Since you reminded me that the children should have permission to use the photographs, we have taken a step back and begun the process of finding out who holds the copyright for the photographs the children want to use and writing to each person to ask permission. We've also been talking about copyright. I've put together a page on the school website with a hot list of links that have information about copyright written for students. It should be on the website by sometime next week.

Some interesting things have begun to happen because of this writing to ask for permission to use photographs. One group of boys has written an article about Ravens Stadium, the home of our local professional football team. When they wrote to the photographer of a picture of the stadium they wanted to use, the photographer gave them permission to use the photo and offered to give them more information about the stadium. I have arranged for the boys to send their article to the photographer who is willing to critique their information and give them more information about the stadium. Thank you for opening this new area of learning for our students. It's a topic that I will be adding to our technology curriculum in the future.

Our head librarian is happy also because studying about copyright issues is included in the new library curriculum which will be introduced for our Catholic schools next year. This has been a wonderful project and experience for our students. Thank you for including us!
