A Lesson Plan and Project on the American Civil War and North Carolina.

This activity was created for my U.S. History Honors Classes in the Spring  2003 semester of my student teaching at T.C. Roberson High School.  It was intended to supplement the textbook readings and lecture on North Carolina and the Civil War.

This project was created with the intention of students exploring the history of their state and more specifically of Western North Carolina during the Civil War.   Asheville, being the home to the NC Governor during the Civil War, is just one example of the local Civil War history.  Many students chose to visit museums, battle fields, and graveyards that had stories to tell about NC during the 1860's. Read papers submitted by students on Thomas's Legion and Generals Buried in Asheville, NC.
As a teacher this project was designed to be in line with NC Curriculum Standards 5.1 and 5.3, elaborate on economic, social, and political conditions in the decade preceding the Civil War and trace important military and political events of the war period, and judge their significance to the outcome of the conflict.

The comprehensiveness of this Civil War Project specifically addresses the INTASC Principle #5.  By encouraging students to work as a group, yet research as individuals I examplified my understanding of indiviual and group motivation and behavior.  This project, which is also accompanied by a presentation, created alearning enviroment that encouraged positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self motivation.

The technological components to this project were Internet research, contacting professors and local historians by using e-mail, word processing and the use of the Internet, Computer Projector, VCR, Television and the CD Player as tools for the presentations.  By utilizing these technologies this project met Technology Competencies (IV.C, V.D).
. I applied multiple methods of evaluation to determine students'  appropriate use of technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity.  By encouraging students to contact people using e-mail and conduct parts of their research on the Internet they used technology to communicate and collaborate with peers, parents, and the larger community in order to nurture student learning.
