SYNOPSIS
-
Sharon drives Jaye and Mahandra to the Satsuma
Reservation, where Mahandra wishes to verify that she's part of the
Satsuma Indian Nation (she's one-eighth Satsuman on her grandmother's
side), so she'll qualify for a grant to pay off her student loans.
Sharon, meanwhile, is only interested in the trip so she can buy
tax-free cigarettes in bulk. As Jaye begins to fill up Sharon's SUV, a
totem pole featuring a carved mole animates and begins to speak to her.
The mole tells Jaye to head for a nearby wigwam. Jaye does as she's
told, and as she enters the wigwam she encounters an old Indian woman.
The old woman tells Jaye she has been chosen. She also says that Jaye
entered the wigwam to "silence the voices" forever. This gets Jaye's
attention, as she thinks the old woman is talking about the inanimate
animals who've been plaguing her.
Meanwhile Sharon tries to purchase cigarettes in bulk at a reservation
trading post. The proprietor, Gerry, informs her that since she's not a
Native American, she's limited to three packs. When Sharon asks who
thought up such a stupid rule, Gerry points to Deanna Littlefoot, whom
Sharon recognizes from law school. The mutual dislike between the pair
surfaces almost immediately. Mahandra enters the trading post and
announces she's turned in her application, which must be reviewed by a
tribal lawyer. Littlefoot says that she's the lawyer. Back at the
wigwam, Jaye continues conversing with the old woman. A Native American
named Bill Hooten enters the wigwam, and wonders why Jaye is having a
conversation with his dead grandmother. Jaye glances back at the old
woman, and realizes she's quite dead and wearing a special death shroud.
When word of Jaye's conversation with the dead woman spreads through the
reservation, Gerry explains that the old woman, known as Gentlefeather,
was the tribe's spiritual guide. The line of "seers" ended with
Gentlefeather, as her grandson, Bill Hooten, doesn't have the same gift.
Back at Wonderfalls, Jaye picks Aaron's brain about all things Satsuman
Indian legend. Aaron confesses he doesn't know a lot about it. She also
asks Bill to stop by, hoping some of the inanimate animals will speak to
him. None of them do. She then shows him a cheesy Maid of the Mist
video, which reviews some of the tribe's history. Jaye encourages Bill
to follow in his grandmother's footsteps. Bill insists he doesn't have
the gift, but Jaye convinces him to give it a try. When Bill returns to
the reservation, Gerry announces that the tribe will run tests to
determine if Bill has "the gift."
The first test is "the Journey of the Feather." Using a ram's horn,
Gerry blows a feather high into the air. As the feather floats downward,
it veers toward Jaye. She tries blowing it away, but doesn't have any
luck. Jaye tries to blame the feather's attraction to her on static
cling, but Gerry concludes it can mean only one thing: she has been
chosen as Gentlefeather's successor. Jaye insists she's not a leader,
and encourages the tribe not to give up on Bill. Gerry is swayed by her
words. He decides another test is in order. Meanwhile Sharon convinces
Mahandra to let her represent her in tribal court. Littlefoot announces,
however, that because of a new tribal order passed the previous night,
birth records used for lineage purposes may not be computer generated.
As a result Mahandra's case is dismissed by a tribal judge. As part of
the test to determine his "gift, " Gerry presents Bill with a group of
objects, and asks him to choose one that belonged to his grandmother.
Bill is completely clueless. A bear skull in the middle of the pile
animates. It says "pick me." Jaye surreptitiously tells Bill to pick the
skull. He does... and chooses correctly. Meanwhile Mahandra reacts with
outrage when she's hit with a $900 bill for court costs. Littlefoot
tells Sharon she's being fined $6750 for buying cigarettes from the
reservation and, being a non-Native, is subject to the New York
cigarette tax.
At an old meeting lodge, Gerry announces that a raven will appear to the
one who summons the energies of Mother Earth. Jaye shuts the window next
to her, and suddenly a raven smashes into the glass. Jaye tells the
others it wasn't a raven. Suddenly Bill collapses and falls on the
ground. Jaye rushes to his side, but can't find a pulse. Gerry tells her
it's part of the final test: departing from this world and speaking with
ancestors. When Bill revives he says he encountered a vision of his
grandmother. Gerry and Aaron wonder if he's suffered some form of brain
damage. When Jaye next encounters Sharon, the totem pole says, "comfort
her." Jaye hugs Sharon, and ends up snagging a bracelet into her hair.
Later Bill and a group of Native Americans show up at Wonderfalls to
protest the Maid of the Mist video, which Bill says is racist. In order
to end the standoff, Jaye tells Bill he doesn't have the gift. She also
tells him the police have been called. When the others in the group hear
this, they quickly file out the door. A security guard shows up at
Wonderfalls. He spots Bill and Jaye having a tug-of-war over a toy gun.
Thinking it's the real thing, he draws his weapon and fires, hitting
Bill. Bill stumbles backwards, but is unhurt. He proclaims himself "the
one." Meanwhile Sharon and Littlefoot get into an argument inside a
steam room. Sharon storms out, and the bracelet accidentally gets jammed
in the door crack, trapping Littlefoot inside.
The security guard tells Bill and Jaye that he fired a rubber bullet.
Bill is crestfallen. Meanwhile Sharon returns to the steam room with
Mahandra, and discovers the door is jammed. Inside the steam room
Littlefoot experiences a vision, and encounters the dead Gentlefeather.
When Littlefoot is released from the steam room, she welcomes Mahandra
to the tribe. When she returns to the reservation, Littlefoot tells
Bill, who has decided to leave the tribe, about her experience. She says
Gentlefeather told her that Bill, who's an accountant, would offer her
his guidance. As she continues talking about her vision, a Las
Vegas-style casino sprouts out of the ground.
