The 449 Room - 6/8/07It was Dave Devlin's first and maybe last performance at the 449 Room. He, along with Parker Barrow, were the closing acts for two under-21 bands. The Conduit may have closed but the next door club was still going strong. Since the last time I was there in 2005, the stage been moved across the room from the plate glass windows which are now covered with black fabric. Most of the club cleared out after the two younger acts were finished but there was still a decent crowd for Parker Barrow, composed of their friends. Not even they were around by the time Dave and The Brothers Gruff came on; they decided to hang out and smoke outside instead. So basically Dave had me, Dan Gober and the sound guy as an audience. After a few songs, something very strange happened. The obviously inebriated Gober started going crazy, running around and whooping. Around this time Nick from Parker Barrow and a few of his friends came in, a couple of them seemed to be drunk as well. We all fooled around in front of the stage, then for some reason Dave and the guys allowed us to come onstage and dance and sing on some covers which seemed to make Frank happy because he always enjoys a party. We also knocked down a few microphone stands and chairs along the way. It seemed to be complete chaos but it was controlled chaos. I left when Dave started discussing his payment for playing that night. I don't know if he was charged for any damage, it didn't seem like there was any harm done. I will never forget the experience, though. Check out the entire set of photos from this show on my Flickr page!
