The Classic @ North Star Bar - 6/28/08Polymer was quiet for the first half of 2008 while they were busy recording their album and breaking in a new guitarist. When a release party for the album was announced fans were surprised to find out that they had changed their name to the Classic. They got a taste of the look and sound of this new version of the band from a brand-new MySpace page but would have to wait a few weeks to see them perform again. When I arrived at the North Star Bar for the release of the LP, also called The Classic , I wondered how different the band would be. I needn't have worried. They may have been dressed in collared shirts, sweaters or jackets but they still had basically the same sound and moved around like before; Ben almost tumbled off the smaller stage. Former guitarist Jon was visiting from California with his girlfriend, it was really nice to see him, he took some good close-up shots of the band. When they played older songs, they introduced them as covers "from a band named Polymer". They only played about half the new album. The new songs do suggest more mature topics: "There Is Hope" was first played at their final show as Polymer and is about a soldier serving in the Middle East . “When Glory Is Gone" refers to the young stars growing too fast in Hollywood . The songs were written when Jon was still in the group but Brian clearly brings something different to the band and I hope to see more of that as time goes on.
