So tonight was the marching band banquet. and It's my last season of NUMB. So I got to give a senior speech. The bulk of my speech (after a few shout outs) was something I wrote back in august. So here is is, for all of you. :-)
I just got done watching the movie Rudy and I have to remember this because even though it is about the f-ing (is that Fighting?) Irish, at the end of the movie I was bawling. Tears down my face.
The reason is that I can see my final season of NUMB creeping up. For the first time in a long time, I have felt that pride setting in, the immense, glorious weight of all of those years of tradition coming into place squarely on mu shoulders.
I'm a senior now. There are only a few more pregames, a few more alma maters, a few more spirit sessions, a few more tenor antics, a few more times where I can wear the black and purple and know what it means to have more pride than anyone can ever understand. No one who isn't in NUMB, who has never been in NUMB, can understand what it all means, can ever hope to understand. I think that oftentimes since last season, and in the interim since last season, I probably didn't understand myself.
But sitting here, watching a movie that is sweetly cheesy, yet naiuls right on the head what college football is and always hould be about--Tradition. Heart. Victory and Honor--sitting there, I realized for the first time in too long what it measns to be a Marching Wildcat, to wear the black wool, to bleed purple.
I put the alma mater on repeat while I wrote this. I just had to hear it while I wrote.
It will be on repeat, in my heart, all the days of my life.
