Metraboy Online: Take One

Classes start tomorrow (which, itself, actually starts in approximately 45 minutes, but that is besides the point) and I'm not excited. I think that the combination of a heinously subpar (tow of my classes were boring as hell) Winter Quarter, the daunting task of an overload this quarter, and the fact that this is my ninth quarter at Northwestern University have combined to make me pretty apathetic about the whole thing, although I am taking a class called "Capitalism and the Pursuit of Happiness" that should rock my world. I dunno. It doesn't help that I will probably have to call my Grandma for help paying for my books again this quarter. I mean, she gets reimbursed ( i'm in a rad scholarship program that reimburses me for my books) but it still sucks. I keep pondering grad school, and one of the biggest reasons that I might NOT do it is that I want to finally be able to take care of my own finances-- meaning I won't have to beg for money (much) because I will be working. Although starting teacher salaries suck.

And The funny thing is, one of the reasons that I might go to grad school is to escape the "real world" for another year or two. The real world that, strangely enough, includes being "financially independent." Sigh. It's all a big circle.

So I'm finally doing this. Finally. I have been talking about it since I first started working on a web project (please note that the old page is no longer fully functional, but it will be eventually) fall quarter and I realized how simple basic web programming is, especially on Geocities. For all you old pros, note that I hope to be able to do this without a cheesy web editor someday. Sorry about the capitalist pig advertising at the bottom--that's the price you pay for free homepages.

Gosh, it feels good to actually accomplish something tonight. It doesn't happen as often as it should.

The biggest source of inspiration for this comes from an unlikely source: a woman I have never met. Her name is Jane Hex, and she maintains a site simply called Hex Magazine. It is a quasi-daily um, er, thingie. I think of it as her personal diary, open for the world to see. She has an amazing writing style, she listens to rad music (like the Promise Ring and Elliot Smith) and her writing makes you think, smile, and nod your head because you know about life's little things that she speaks of. Much like Jane's page, I am probably going to archive each day's message so that people who miss for a while can catch up. Also like her's, I WANT to update daily, but I have a life too, so I might not be able to. I owe her a huge debt just because without her, I never would have thought of this. Thanks, Jane, and remember--imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

I intend to add bells and whistles as I go along. I originally was going to make the appearance of it incredible at the get go, but after a full five months of procrastinating, if I didn't do this soon, even if just in a rough version it wouldn't get done.

Another daily feature will include random stuff as well as what I am listening to as I updated for the day. Today it was R. E. M.'s newest, Up. It's mellowpoppyneatofresh. Which is almost the same as crescent fresh.

If you are wondering, the name comes from a zine that I did called metraboy. It had a whopping print run of 3 issues, but I hope to actually do a full out run of 100 someday.

By the way, I swiped this background color from an unlikely source, nudge nudge, wink wink say no more.

Email me here with comments/ web tips/ encouragement/ poems/ recipes. If you know me personally, email me my regular nwu.edu address.

Finally, thanks for stopping by. It means a lot. Hugs.
