hey jim i liked the newest post, about how anyone can improve their lives if they try. well put. while everyone should try to make the best of what they've got, the simple fact is that much of our lives our not under out control. when i come and visit you i pass hrough hammond, gary, and east chicago, communities whose economies have been damaged by steel plant layoffs resulting from IMF policies, and whose cultural lives have been damaged by the racism and ignorance that causes white flight. here in valparaiso t ey have televisions in every classroom at the high school because the valpo school district is ridiculously over funded. meanwhile other schools not an hour from here barely have enough space or textbooks. sure, we all need to work to make our lives and w rld better, but for a kid who goes to northwestern (whose obviously been dealt a helluva good hand) to say 'anyone can succeed' is so ridiculous i'd almost say it's laughable if i didn't find it so offensive. anyway, very good post. sorry i haven't been in touch, i've been hella busy with school. in three days the work's finally done but it's gonna be a long long three days. i'm looking forward to seeing you soon. hearts and stars, n8
