WAP 7 The High Speed Passenger Loco
Indian Railways after successfully adapting to ABB technology of three phase traction started production of WAG 9 and WAP 5 class of electric Locomotive , it was felt that the technology whatever imported and adapted to should be suitable for specific traffic needs in this country . Since this was highly dependent on application software incorporated in its controls, it was felt necessary to develop our own software to suit our specific requirement for particular pattern of traffic. This brought about the birth of TRACTION SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY at CLW.
THE NECESSITY
Indian Railways have a vast network of 63000 Kms of track and 36.5% of these have been electrified and many more are in the making. IR runs 8000 numbers of passenger carrying trains daily and expects an annual growth of 6% only in passenger traffic. With the meager source and tight finance it has become necessary to run more number of trains within the present line capacity and more number of passengers in each train at high speed.
In simple words IR has to seek for higher productivity from its assets.
WHAT WE DID
CLW took up the challenge and developed a modification of the application software of WAG 9 class of locomotive and developed a new class of locomotive called WAP 7. The loco is identical to WAG 9 except for a change in the application software and gear ratio to suit for higher speed for passenger services.
