CLW turned out its first passenger loco in 1980. This was a 3760 HP capacity WAP1 class fitted with cast steel bogies. This manufactured keeping in view immediate requirement for Rajdhani Express trains capable to run at 130 Kmph. This was further improved to WAP3 with fabricated bogies fit to run at 140 KMPH. These had a drawback. They could not haul more than 19 coaches and required bankers at some graded sections. The need of a more powerful better designed and faster loco due to increased passenger traffic to clear graded sections without bankers was felt. RDSO prepared one conceptual design of a better version WAP4 in Nov. 1993. CLW did the rest, from detailed manufacturing drawings to rolling out the first loco in a record time of 10 months. Thus WAP4 with 5000 HP came into being fit to haul 26 coaches at 140 KMPH. Presently these are used on Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express trains.
