CLW ranks amongst the biggest main line electric locomotive manufacturing units in the world. It is currently manufacturing three types of locomotives viz. WAG-7, WAP-5 and WAG-9. The fabrication and major items such as shell, bogie, traction motor and switchgear equipments are being done in CLW itself.
It also manufactures traction motors type HS 15250 A. It has recently started manufacturing first 3 phase state of art 1000 HP traction motor type 6 FRA 6068 based on the technology from M/s Adtranz Switzerland.
The production of Electric Locomotives, commenced in 1961. The first 1500 Volt D.C. Locomotive named 'LOKMANYA' was commissioned by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, on the 14th October, 1961. The production of 25 KV A.C. LOCO commenced as 'Bidhan'. Subsequently CLW upgraded the horsepower of Electric Loco from 3400 HP to 5000 HP. CLW also built 25 KV/AC/1500 V.D.C. AC/DC Locos. The first loco 'Vallabh ' was commissioned on 30th January'75. Presently, CLW manufacturers only 25 KV/A.C. mainline Electric Locomotives of 5000 HP designated as WAG-7 and WAP-4.
CLW has augmented its production capacity in phases i.e. from 60 to 80 locomotives (Phase-I), 80 to 100 locos (Phase-II) and 100 to 130 locos (Phase-III). Work of augmentation of capacity from 130 to 150 locos (Phase-IV) and 150 to 170 locos (Phase-V) are in progress including facilities for manufacture of 3-phase GTO controlled locomotives
Starting production of electric locomotives in 1961, CLW has so far produced 14 classes of electric locomotives till 1996-97.The table below gives an account.

The WAP-7 and WAG-9H locomotives are recent models turned out by Chittaranjan Loco Works. Both are derivatives of the WAG-9 loco. The photographs and information have been supplied by Sujeet Mishra, of the Traction Software Development Lab at
CLW's Centre for Design and Development.
WAP-7 (photo, 92KB) The WAP-7 is a high-speed passenger version of the WAG-9, with a service speed of 130km/h. Undergoing trials on the Faridabad-Mathura section.
WAG-9H (photo, 75KB) The WAG-9H is a heavier version (by 12 tonnes) of the WAG-9; the higher adhesive weight makes it suitable for hauling heavier freight rakes: 58-wagon BOXN rake,
- 4,700 tonnes, on a 1:150 grade. Undergooing trials on the Ujjain-Nagda section.
