Production of Steam Locomotives originated on 26th. January 1950 with an annual target of 120 locomotives and within a short period of less than 10 months the first Steam loco was dedicated to the nation on 1st. November 1950. It was christened as "DESHBANDHU" to remember Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das  the great patriot.

This locomotive was a WG class numbered 8401. 

The production of steam locomotives which started in 1950, was continued till February 1972. The workshop produced 2351 steam locomotives for Broad Gauge and Meter Gauge. The various types of Steam Engines produced are as follows :

A decision was taken by Railway Board in 1960s to continue to use the existing steam locomotives fleet (9700 locomotives in 1971 against 1091 diesels and 552 electrics) to the end of their  economically useful lives, which would have meant the end of 2000.

Production of Steam Locomotives was stopped on June 30, 1970. The last WG bearing the fleet no 10560 appropriatelynamed ANTIM SITARA ( The Last Star ) was rolled out of the assembly lines.This was last seen in South Eastern Railway, Kharagpur.    

In the mean time between the transitional period of switching over to production of Electric Locomotives  an order for 60 nos. of YG class (2-8-2) Meter Gauge Locomotives was received . CLW successfully completed the order and after despatch of the last YG no. 3573 on February 5, 1972 , to Varanasi Loco Shed on N.E Railway,  the steam era was finally put to an end in CLW. This had no name probably because the original order was for 100 nos. for private builder TELCO of Jamshedpur , Bihar.
