Normally, it is a story of adjustment and readjustment and in CLW it was a story of change through its history of half-a-century.
Steam to Diesel, Diesel Hydraulic Locomotives to Generator type Electric Locomotive to Hitachi type electric locomotives and lastly to the most modern 3-phase Electric Locomotives. It is a saga of field achievements as was in all great projects. There had plenty of problems and hindrances which was overcome with grit and determination. The Railway Engineers at CLW had demonstrated their competence at every stage during the evolution of CLW into what it is today.
In its efforts of manufacturing locomotives for Indian Railways, CLW had been continuously endeavoring in reduction of imported components and indigenisation, the following table will show the cost reduction factor and 3-phase loco from 1997-98 to 2003 –2004 as envisaged in their planning.

CLW today is a frontline manufacturer of Modern 3-phase 6000 HP freight as well passenger locomotives that can haul heavier training loads at higher speeds with high reliability levels. They have taken a quantum jump in manufacturing of indigenous 3-phase locomotives of freight and passenger and have gone about 50 years ahead. It is 2nd in Asia and 5th in the world to have this technology.
