Saint Maria Goretti, Patroness of Purity

We greet you, O beautiful and lovable Saint, martyr on earth and angel in heaven! Look down from your glory upon us who love and venerate you and ask God to grant us the graces we need to imitate your innocence and love of chastity. On your forehead you bear the full, brilliant and victorious name of Christ. In your virginal countenance may be read the strength of your love and the constancy of your fidelity to your Divine Souse. As His bride, espoused in blood, you have traced in yourself His own image. To you, powerful intercessor with the Lamb of God, we entrust ourselves. For, while we admire heroism, we are even more desirous of imitating your strength of faith and your inviolate purity of conduct. In trusting that we shall be protected from every contamination, and walk the highways of life with serenity of spirit, deep joy and purity of heart. Amen.

Oh! Saint Maria Goretti who, strengthened by God's grace, did not hesitate even at the age of twelve to shed your blood and sacrifice life itself to defend your virginal purity, look graciously on the unhappy human race which has strayed far from the path of eternal salvation. Teach us all, and especially youth, with what courage and promptitude we should flee for the love of Jesus anything that could offend Him or stain our souls with sin. Obtain for us from our Lord victory in temptation, comfort in the sorrows of life, and the grace which we earnestly beg of thee (here insert intention), and may we one day enjoy with thee the imperishable glory of Heaven. Amen.

O God, who has exalted blessed Maria, thy virgin, in the glory of Thy Saints, grant that, as we rejoice in her commemoration, so may we profit by the example of her virtues; especially those of purity and chastity. Through Christ Our Lord. R. Amen.

Chaplet of Saint Maria Goretti

(modeled after the St. Philomena Chaplet)

Begin with the Apostles' Creed, three Our Fathers in honor of the Blessed Trinity and two Hail Marys in honor of Mary and her spouse St. Joseph.

On ordinary rosary beads, pray on each Our Father bead:

Hail, O holy St. Maria Goretti, whom I acknowledge, after Mary, as my advocate with the Divine Spouse, intercede for me now and at the hour of my death.

On each Hail Mary bead pray:

St. Maria Goretti, beloved daughter of Jesus and Mary, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Amen.

In conclusion pray:

Hail, O illustrious St. Maria Goretti, who shed your blood in order not to offend God through mortal sin! I bless the Lord for all the graces He has bestowed upon thee during thy life, and especially at thy death.

I praise and glorify Him for the honor and power with which he was crowned thee, and I beg thee to obtain for me from God the graces I ask through thy intercession.

Prayer to Consecrate One's Day to God through Saint Maria Goretti

I call upon you my sweet friend, St. Maria Goretti. I ask if you would please this day, lead me and guide me to do what is right and protect me from all occasions of sin especially sins against the virtues of purity and chastity.

I offer you this day and everything within it. Present my small and lowly gift to Mary and at her side give it to Our Lord Jesus. I trust in your powerful intercession that you will answer my prayer. I promise to follow your holy example throughout the day and may I one-day share heaven with you my darling sister in Christ. Amen.

Prayer for a Good Confession

O St. Maria Goretti, I desire to make a good confession, a perfect one -- such as the one you had made before you died. You gave me a heroic example of pardon and mercy by forgiving your own murderer without delay. You succumbed to death in order not to hurt God through mortal sin. I see your life as one large sacrifice for love of neighbor and God. You who led such a saintly life and died a martyr may you help me to examine my conscience, make a perfect contrition, and receive the graces I need to become a saint like you. Amen.

Prayer After Receiving Holy Communion

Lord God, you gave St. Maria Goretti the crown of eternal joy because she gave her life rather than renounce the virginity she had promised to Christ.

With the courage this Eucharist brings help us to rise out of the bondage of our earthly desires and attain to the glory of your kingdom. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

An Everyday Prayer

Father, source of innocence and lover of chastity, you gave St. Maria Goretti the privilege of offering her life in witness to Christ. As you gave her the crown of martyrdom, let her prayers keep us faithful to your teaching. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
