bullet Stanley Singleton Vandiver was born on 6 Jun 1857 in Kentucky. He died on 14 May 1939 in Antlers, Oklahoma.(963) (964) Dean Lacefield, 15 Dec 1992 He was buried on 15 May 1939 in Antlers, Oklahoma. Stanley is buried in Antlers, Oklahoma. Antlers is in southeast Oklahoma about 20 miles north of the Texas state line. Stanley was Psychic, and believed in ghosts. He began to believe his barn was haunted by ghosts. He then decided and built another barn. Shortley after the new barn was built he set fire to the old barn. Unfortunately the ghosts took up habitating the new barn as well.
When his youngest daughter was about 4 mos. old, Stanley disappeared. He left no indication of where he was going. After a few years waiting, his son Jeff went to look for him. Jeff looked in Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, back in Kentucky, Tennessee, and finally picked up his trail in Oklahoma. Jeff met an old man driving a wagon down a road, and asked the old man if he knew of a Stanley Vandiver. To the amazement of Jeff, the old man announced that he was Stanley Vandiver. Jeff stayed with Stanley and got to know him better. Jeff asked Stanley why he up and left the family, and Stanley said it was because of a ghostly lady that would not leave him alone. Jeff recalled this explanation to his family. It was supported by the other members of the family that about the time Fanny died, Stanley began having problems. At night he would throw a lady ghost out of bed only to have her return again and again.

Dean Lacefield - "Stanley Singleton Vandiver was a very superstitious person. He once burned down a barn because he thought it had ghosts in it.
He left his wife and family when his youngest daughter was very small. This was about 1905. They never saw him again until his son Jessie looked him up in the year 1935.
I found him in the 1910 census in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was boarding with Mollie Bell and her family. He was listed as a horse trader. When he died in 1939 he was probably married to Mollie Bell.
He was never reunited with any of his family with the exception of his son Jesse.
Whoever filled out his death certificate got part of it wrong. They just unknown on most of the lines.
Stanley was a hansome man. He appeared to have dark hair and dark eyes. This was probably from his Indian ancestry. All of his daughters that I saw were very pretty.
Some said that he and his brother, Pendleton (Uncle Pen) Vandiver looked alike." Parents: Joseph "Dutch" M. Vandiver and Munerba / Minirva Jane Pharris.

bulletWilliam Vandiver was born on 2 Jun 1800 in North Carolina. (978)(979) He died about 1846 in Muhlenberg Co., Kentucky.(980) William was the eldest son of George and Nancy Vandiver. Was born in North Carolina in about 1800.

1850 Ky Census, William Vandiver, Muhlenburg Co., p192, Dist, 509 M432-214 3/3
Lists Wm 22 [b. ca 1828] and Margaret 20 [b. ca 1830]. This is not with the subject William, but is the son of Charles Vandiver and is the nephew of the subject William. Some researchers have confused these two Williams.

The 1830 Census for Muhlenberg County, Kentucky lists under William Vandever: 0 0 0 0 1 0 ..|| 3 0 0 0 1 = 1M [1800-10] 3F[1825-30] 2F[1810-15] 1F[1800-10]. William is 1M[1800-10].

The 1840 Census for Muhlenberg County, Kentucky lists under William Vandever: 1 1 0 0 1 ..|| 1 3 1 0 1 = 1M [1800-10] 3F[1825-30] 2F[1810-15] 1F[1800-10]. William is 1M[1800-10].

Therefore from 1830 & 1840 Census William must have been born before 1810.

The 1850 Census for Muhlenberg County, Kentucky does not list William Vandever
the William Vandiver that married Celia Rickard is dead in 1850; and, Celia returned to live with John (probably her father); and, that some of their children are apparently accounted for in the census record; and, that William probably died between 1845 and 1850; and, that Celia was born ca 1804; and that her William was probably born ca 1804 or before. Parents: George Vandiver and Nancy.

He was married to Rebecca Musgrave on 15 Jul 1824 in Muhlenberg Co., Kentucky. (981) William sired eight children, at least three by Rebecca Musgrove and at least four by Celia Rickard. There is a question as to who is the mother of his fourth child, Elizabeth. If the year of her birth is correct she would have been born before August of 1832; whereas, the date of his marriage to Celia Rickard is 5 May 1832, is not enough time to have a baby in wedlock. Its takes approx. 280 days. The two possibilities are; (1) Elizabeth is the child of Rebecca Musgrove who died during or shortly after her birth and her father married Celia Rickard immediately thereafter.
(2) Elizabeth is the child of Celia Rickard who was pregnant prior to her marriage to William.
Children were: Mary Ellen Vandiver, Elizabeth Vandiver.

He was married to Celia Rickard on 5 May 1832 in Muhlenberg Co., Kentucky.(982) 1840 Census Muhl Co., Ky, p348, for Wm Vandever, lists:
1 M [<5], 1 M [5-10], 1 M [20-30], 1 F [<5], 3 F [5-10], 1 F [10-15], 1 F [20-30] or,
1M[b. 1835-40{John}], 1M[b. 1830-35{Ferdinand}], 1M[b. 1810-20{William}] & 1F[b. 1835-40{Lydia}], 3F[b. 1830-35], 1F[b. 1825-30], 1F[b. 1810-20{Celia}]
Children were: Ferdinand E. Vandiver, John Vandiver, Lydia Vandiver, Grace Vandiver, David W. Vandiver.

bullet William J. "Will" Vandiver was born in Sep 1859 in McLean Co., Ky. He died about 1902.(987) Lola J. Anderson, Family Chart
Died of pneumonia. He was buried about 1902 in Butler Co., Kentucky. (988)(989) At Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Northern Butler Co.

According to Lola Anderson he is buried at Greenbrier Cem. William was the 4th child, 3rd son in Joseph Vandiver's marriage (his second) to Minirva Pharris.

Not much is known about William and we do not know the cause of his death. All we know came from my Grandfather, Arthur Vandiver or his half sister "Aunt Laura". Arthur was 9 years old when his father died. He was not old enough to have studied his fathers character and personality. Some insight may come from Aunt Laura who once suggested to her stepmother, Sarah Jane, that if she would not marry Tilford, that she would stay home and help Sarah raise the children. Apparently there was a large difference between Will and Tilford. Loretta Vandiver Blunk conveys the following insight regarding Will.

Loretta stated that "One" asked Sarah Jane Likens Vandiver, "Grandma Haynes" if she had her life to live over would she do anything differently. (NOTE: Sarah had cancer when she was asked this question, was probably at Aunt Lizzie's house or in the hospital, and all knew that she was nearing the end) She stated "No, but I wish that my later life would have been as happy as my earlier". Loretta added that she was referring to her earlier life as when she was married to William.

If Will was typical of his family he would have been fun loving, outgoing, and have had talent for playing music. His sister Melissa was the mother of Bill Monroe.

IN REPLY:
During our telephone conversation last week ca. 14 Jan 2000. Our Sarah Jane and her parents were listed on the Ohio Co., Ky Census. If the Likens were there in the late 1790's there may be some Revolutionary War Pension info available, and/or there may be land grant info available. Remember Western Ky was left for Revolutionary Land Grants until the early 1800's. Just something to look at. - LA Warren

Dear Cuz,

I am attempting to trace the Likens lineage of our Great-Grandmother, Sarah Jane Likens. Do you know the county in which the household of Mark Likens and Lucinda Autry was located for the 1880 U S census.

I am attaching a small file that I began this week; however, I have no connecting links. Do you have any info. on William and/or Mark Likens of Warren Co., Ky?
They were there in the late 1790s thru the early 1800s.

I believe we will find her Likens lineage will go back to the 1650s In New Sweden.
