Agency Pass Book"
"
The book is available at the U of K Young Library, Call #: F208 P65 1990
NOTE: If this is our Reuben, he would have been 11 yrs - 9 mos old. This passport
was issued in Georgia. Reuben's birthplace in Jackson Co., is in N. Central
Tennessee about 25 mi S of Tompkinsville, KY. And about 100 mi N. of Chattanooga,
TN (which is on the Georgia State Line). Parents: William
Pharris and Catherine. He was married to
Mahala Armstrong. "Reuben Pharris was a full blooded Cherokee Indian
living in Knox Co., Tennessee. In that day it was not popular to be part Indian,
like being part black now. Reuben's own people didn't like for one of theirs
to have a white wife and family. It was told to Reuben (probably by close relatives)
that the Indian brotherhood planned to kill him and his family this night. In
fact they were to kill him and his family the next day. So Reuben Pharris fixed
a cart in a dry river bed at the back of their house and had a big party that
night -- making as much noise as they could. The noise was a lot of music with
lots of extra noise to cover up the traveling ox-cart down the river bed to safety
for his family. They knew the Indians were watching the house that night.
His family slipped away that night and they never saw their father again. They
were already far on their way to Kentucky the next day when the Indians came
to kill the Pharris family. They only found the merry maker, Reubin, and killed
him.
This ancestor Reuben Pharris and his wife, Mahala Armstrong Pharris surely were
brave parents. He gave his life for those he loved dearly. It would take a
very brave lady to travel all the distance from Knox Co., Tenn to Butler Co.,
Ky with her family -- not knowing that at any time they might be followed and
all killed."
NOTE: This story was given to me by Lola Anderson. It had been passed on to
her from Layana Price of Gainesville, Texas. It was a story told by her great
great grandmother Mahala Pharris- Evans to her grandchildren many times. Question-
how can you be full blooded Cherokee with a name like Reuben Pharris? -- L.A.Warren
Dean Lacefield, Feb 1997 - "The first record I have of Reuben Farris is
in Smith Co Tenn in 1830. 1 male under 5, 2 males 5-10 (Cavender & Tavender),
3 females under 5 - 2 females 5 to 10. Both parents age 30 to 40.
In 1840 Mahala had moved to Jackson Co with seven children. Living next door
was a family named Swift Martha Farris married Sidney Swift in 1837. Tavender
md. Francis Swift 1831.
Mrs Anderson & Mr. Lindeman have accounted for 7 of these children. One
daughter is not accounted for. apparently the youngest born between 1835 &
1840.
In 1830 they had eight children under age 10. By 1840 Mahala had only 7 children."
Cavender & Tavender were twin brothers.
