He died in 1805 in Hampshire County, Virginia. Notes for WILLIAM VANDIVER:
William Vandiver was born about 1725, probably in Baltimore Co., Maryland, son
of Jacob and Jane (Guinn) Vandiver. His mother had died by 1730, and the family
must have moved over into St. Mary's Co. His father died when he was about 9
years old, and he was probably in the care of Susanna (who may have been his
aunt) and Nicholaus Green who were the administrator's of Jacob's estate. Around
1750 he was listed in the "Neale Estate" with George Vandeveer (assumed
to be his cousin) - William receiving a share of a crop.
He must have removed to the portion of Fairfax County, Virginia, which was later
divided out to Loudon County, around 1752/3. It is likely that he was married
in 1753 to Elizabeth (possibly the daughter of William Lane). He appears to
have resided in Cameron Parish from at least 1756, though he is only found in
the Tax List in 1760 as residing in the household of James Lane (Jr.). In 1761
he removed the family to Frederick County, Virginia residing near Augusta.
In 1770, he made his first purchase of property in Hampshire County, Virginia
(this area later became part of West Virginia). He moved his family that year,
and here resided until his death around 1805, when his children divided his estate.
He is known to have had 11 children that reached maturity.
NOTE: Tradition states that William's wife was Elizabeth Lewis. Given the approximate
date of birth of his oldest son, it is certain that William was married while
a resident of Fairfax Co., VA. Here a possible connection to the Lane family
is indicated based on the Tax List for 1760. The Lane's had long been property
owners in Fairfax Co., near what would become the border of Loudoun Co. and Fairfax
Co., on the Loudoun side. In 1761 he removed to Frederick Co., VA, which is
closer to where the Lewis family was resident in Augusta Co.

He died in 1776 in Loudon County, Virginia. Notes for GEORGE VANDIVEER:
George Vandiveer was probably born in St. Mary's or Baltimore Co., Maryland
around 1725. He was married to Ann (possibly Harbin) by 1753, the year his son
Edward was baptized at Rock Creek Church. He received 50 acres from Joshua Harbin
in Prince George's Co., MD, which was located near where Congress stands today
in Washington D.C. Here he is assumed to have carried on his trade as a Goldsmith.
The family remained in Maryland until 1760, when he purchased 216 acres from
Thomas Pritchard in Cameron Parish, Loudoun Co., Virginia. As he moved his family
to Virginia, he sold the property received from Joshua Harbin to Joshua's younger
brother Edward Villiers Harbin. It is possible that the mining speculations
in that part of Virginia had drawn him there. Additionally, he may have selected
the area where William Vandiver (son of Jacob Vandiver who died at St. Mary's
Co., MD in 1736) had been residing.
Whether George continued in his occupation as a Goldsmith is not known, but
he was licensed to keep a tavern "at his house" from 1761-1764. Based
on the descriptions of the property he purchased, it is believed that he resided
near Mount Hope, close to the site of the original Episcopal Broad Run Church.
Apparently, George took suddenly ill between April (when he paid for his ordinary
license) and August 1764, when he wrote his will. He died about 2 months after
writing his will, as it was proven on 9 October. His wife Ann, who was executor,
relinquished in favor of James Lane. This may have been because she was about
6-7 months pregnant at that time with their 5th known child, and second son,
whom she named George.

with filling the vats with proper acid and metal, and moving RR tank cars. He
resided Rt #1, Ky 185, Caneyville on 20 Dec 1958 in Grayson Co., Kentucky. He
died on 21 Mar 1972 in Grayson Co., Kentucky. Arthur died in the Grayson Co.,
Memorial Hospital of the combined complications arising from a heart condition
and stroke. His tenure in the hospital was about 3 weeks. He suffered a stroke
about 5 days prior to his death. When he regained consciousness from the stroke,
he was paralyzed over a significant portion of his body and he had no speech.
Loretta Blunk feels that when he became aware of the affects the stroke had on
his body, he became depressed. Since he could not communicate directly with
his family, he was locked inside a non-functioning body, and was alone with his
fears and anxieties. He had been active all his life, was used to providing
for himself. He also knew the effects of stroke first hand from his wife, Eunie.
He was buried on 22 Mar 1972 in Ohio Co., Kentucky. He is buried at Antioch
Cem. in Ohio Co. He was described as 5' 7", 145 #,. He was named after
Col. John McHenry of Ohio County. See the 17th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry of
the Civil War. He was Church of Christ. ARTHUR VANDIVER
Arthur was the eldest child born to Will Vandiver and Sarah Likens.
He and his family lived at a farm adjacent to his Grandfather, Joseph Vandiver's
farm.
Arthur was a family man, church elder and a respected citizen.
He was the eldest child from his father, Will's, second marriage, to Sarah Jane
Lykins. He was born into a close knit Vandiver family that lived in the "Tanyard"
area of Butler County. Nearby lived his grandfather, Joseph; and his uncles
Stanley and George. By the time he had turned 13 years of age, his father, grandfather
and younger brother Marvin had all died. When his mother remarried, he did not
get along with his strict and authoritative stepfather. He had a stammer in
his voice. In his early years he lacked an interest in education, but was taught
to read and write by his "Aunt Betty" who lived in Indianapolis, Indiana.
It is believed that the Lykins family encouraged Sarah to let Arthur live with
Aunt Betty to lessen the strained relationship with his step father.
In 1913 he married Eunice, the third child of Enos and Annie (McDaniel) Craig.
Arthur and Eunie lived with Annie and her family briefly until they could afford
their own farm. James, their first and only male child, died after 32 hours.
The baby was buried in the Craig Cemetery. The couple went on to raise 5 daughters.
Arthur was resourceful and no stranger to hard work. He rotated incomes by
farming, factory work and running an ice plant. To support his family, he would
swap between farming and working in the city. It was difficult to find employment
during the Depression. Working in the city would require that he leave Eunie
on the farm from spring through fall. She would have to care for the family
and raise the crops. In 1940 this routine ended when he moved his family to
Louisville. Although he owned a car, he rode an Elgin bicycle that he built
from parts, to and from work daily. He never missed a day of work, which frequently
included Saturdays.
He credited Eunie with being thrifty and saving. From 1944 to '58 he worked
at the Kentucky Color and Chemical Plant. When he retired in 1958, he was able
to buy a 5 acre farm and live off of his savings. In 1960, Eunie died. He kept
the farm, but chose to rotate staying with his daughters and their families.
Arthur was a god fearing and devoted family-man. He was strongly protective
of his family. Others saw in him a bit of a temper and fearlessness coupled
with honesty and standing by his word. Although his education was limited (3rd
grade), he held education in high esteem and respected it in others. He was
fun loving and outgoing. He enjoyed pulling the occasional prank and joking.
He liked his occasional beer and enjoyed dancing. He was never known to be
drunk. In times of stress, or uncertainty, he would whistle.
As I remember him, he was slight of stature only 145 lbs and about
5' - 9" tall. His favorite desert was a mince-meat pie. He smoked Chesterfield
unfiltered cigarettes or sometimes rolled his own. Otherwise, he smoked a pipe
charged with Prince Albert or Velvet, or Roi-Tan "seconds" (cigars
that he would obtain from his daughter that worked in the cigar factory). If
his hands needed to be free to work, he would chew Mammoth Cave, flavored with
a cut of plug from either Apple, Days-O-Work, Cup, or Mule. The night time regimen
before going to bed (to maintain health and ward off colds) might include Vicks,
Syrup of Black Draught or a shot of mineral oil. If he became concerned about
his weight, he might suck a raw egg through a pin hole pricked through the end
of it's shell, before retiring. His Sunday suit was a brown wool or gabardine
pin strip fitted with a Masonic lapel pin. A brown felt fedora with wide 2 1/2
" rim, its crown was folded in a "C" or "Tear drop",
pinched with two dents in the front topped his head which was aligned straight
across the brow, its brim was turned down in the front and up in the back. His
day would begin after dressing with a shave, the lather mixed in his shaving
cup and applied to his face by a shaving brush. The lather with stubble was
removed with a single edge Gem safety razor. The Gem safety razor having replaced
a straight razor with accompanying leather strop. He taught me how to tell time,
whittle and whistle.
In 1972 he suffered a heart attack and was admitted into the Grayson
County Memorial Hospital. He died there from the added complications which resulted
from a stroke.
