bullet Enos Sigel Craig(216) (217) was born on 4 Mar 1870 in Grayson Co., Kentucky. He was a Railroad worker in 1910 in Grayson Co., Kentucky. He died on 27 Mar 1933. Parents: James Wellington Craig and Caroline Bratcher.

bullet Eunice Myrtle Craig was born on 7 Dec 1895. She died on 23 Apr 1961 in Grayson Co., Kentucky.(218) Eunie died of a stroke on a Sunday morning, before church. It was a partly sunny day moderate temperature, high humidity; having been preceeded by several days of high winds, rains, and an overcast Saturday, cold, with showers and drizzles. She was uncertain about going to church because she said she felt out of sorts. While waiting on the couch, she had what appeared to be a siesure, she slumped backward - facing upward toward the ceiling with her head resting on the back of the couch, uttered what sounded like " I da---", after which, her head rolled to her right on the back of the couch; and her lower jaw dropped open. There was no sign of a pulse, there was no breathing, one eye had crossed and both had rolled partally up. Shouting at her, shaking her and slapping her produced no response. After the ambulance was summoned, Arthur asked Jim and Faustine if they knew of anything further that could be done for Eunie. He said something to the effect "Poor little thing, I guess her time has come" he went alone to the back of the coal house. When the ambulance arrived, Arthur came from behind the coal house, wipping his nose and assisted the ambulance attendants. The attendants checked her, then stated that she had died before they arrived. She was buried in Ohio Co., Kentucky. @ Antioch Cem. EUNIE CRAIG - VANDIVER
Eunie was the 3rd of 7 children, 2nd daughter, born to Enos Craig and Annie McDaniel. She was robust, energetic and self-reliant. She was fun loving but was not as gregarious as her husband Arthur. She had long dark hair that she wore in a bun on the back of her head. She was fond and proud of her lang hair.
All that I ever knew of her she was heavy set, but in her earlier days she was trim and very attractive as Arthur recounted. In her early childhood days she may have been subjected to having been over-disiciplined because she was a strict disipilinarian. Furthermore, she did not tollerate crying, she may not have been allowed to cry when she was a child. She had a big heart and would share freely with others but in similar fashion demanded a strict code of ethics or behavior from others. She detested boasting bragging and tattling. There was never a raised voice between her and Arthur. If there was a difference of opinon it was never expressed in front of me.
When her husband would leave the farm to find work in the city, it would place additional burden on her that she did not enjoy. In like fashion, she would place additional responsibilities on her older daughters still living at home to take care of the housework and children. Even later in life she never spoke in favor of leaving the city to return to the farm.
Eunie was reported to have had a deep laugh. She did not care for slapstick humor but preferred situtational comedy. She enjoyed "I Luv Lucy" and Saturday night wrestling on television. She also watched the afternoon soaps on television. Early afternoon may include some gossip on the porch with a neighbor lady and a dip of "Burton" snuff or a good "Meller" apple. Monday's were wash day, Tuesday's were for ironing. Her hobbies included collecting post cards, and photos.
She was a midwife. She delivered Jeri Cook; Myrtle, Florie, & Margie Embry to name a few. She was known somewhat as an "Herb Doctor", having learned those skills from her mother, Annie and her grandfather, Thomas McDaniel. In Louisville, she still maintained a supply of roots and dried leaves with her canning jars. She could make teas and potions. She would collect poke, mustard, and dandilion leaves out of her yard, and along the fence, for greens. She had peach, cherry and plum trees and grapes that she would dry and make into jams and jellies. She enjoyed raising a garden and canning. She knew all the signs of weather and phases of the moon. Vegetables, included potatoes, peppers, onions, tomatoes, corn, beans, peas and squash. She had a green thumb that extended into house plants. She had a plant that blooms once in seven years and at that, for only a few hours during night. For her it was considered a regular matter to russle up a batch of biscuits, bacon or ham, with eggs and brewed coffee for breakfast. Sunday breakfast may include white or "red eye" gravey, or both. She made her biscuits by pouring buttermilk into a flour volcano, mixing with fingers, kneeding, rolling and cutting with a glass. I can still smell her morning breakfast. She hated to see food go to waste, which had no minor part in doing with her size.
She was thrifty and always set aside a portion of Arthur's pay to savings and a payment toward a National Life insurance premium. Her own canned goods were a regular part of the bill of fare. She saved string, bows ribbons. She could spin, and made many balls of her own cotton string. I can't recall any food being thrown away. Some left-overs made their way into a Wednesday or Friday soup. She quilted and sewed. Quilting was usually done in the Winter or early Spring. She made shirts dresses and mended cloths and socks. She used Singer sewing machine with a foot tredle.
But now as a man, I appreciate the time and my recollections of time that she made for me as a small boy. We played chinese checkers, books and cards. She taught me my alphabet, numbers and how to write my name before I went off to the first grade. She would work with me after school on my spelling, multiplication tables, reading and writting. She made a school paste for me out of flour and other ingredients, for my cutting and pasting. Sometimes she would bake a batch of cookies for me. I especially enjoyed her making ginger bread boys that she would cut out with a knife. Once she ran of of ginger, we then had cinnamon bread boys. She also made a soft raisen type cookie. She would frequently make us a picnic lunch with "Dagwood" sandwiches that we had under the fruit trees. She taught me the art of melting wax and making candles, which we would burn later that night while she told me stories. Or she would make us the "jar drink" before going off to bed.
She died of a stroke on an early Spring Sunday morning after breakfast and before dressing to go to church.

He served in the military between 14 Oct 1864 and 27 May 1866 in Tennessee.(227) A review of James' military records (badly faded - interpretation subject to reversal) indicate that he served with Company D of the 26th Kentucky Infantry headquartered in Louisville. His enlistment was classified as "Substitute" from 14 Oct 1864 to 27 May 1866 when he was ordered to be mustered out to Briggs Mill, Ohio Co. Ky. He enlisted under a Capt. Grissom in Owensboro. He identified himself as a "Farmer". From Mar 1865 to May 3, 1866 the army held him responsible for the loss of "1 Enfield rifle and accouterments". The matter was dropped when his Company Commander, Capt Thomas J. Merehon, took responsibility for the missing rifle. His pay vouchers indicate for the entire months of Jan & Feb 1865 listed him as sick in a Franklin Tenn. hospital; and likewise for Mar & Apr 1865 he was in a hospital in Alexandria, Va. He was in at least 3 hospitals.
Some indexed material confuses Pvt. James W. with a Corp. James P. Craig from Morgan Co. Ky; 28 yrs old; 5' - 8" tall; enlisted 6/17/1862; with Co A; 7th Kentucky Calvary ; charged with loss of 1 colt pistol; was taken prisoner and remained in a southern prison until the end of the war.
