All About Heather Dawsons Creek! Who would have thought a drunken hazy Sunday nursing a student hangover I would have heard "London Rain" through my television introducing me to Heather's unique vocal style. I immediately rushed out and bought the Siren CD and I have fallen into a deep relationship with Heather's music and lyrics. I have seen the lady live twice in Cambridge (October 2001) and in London (March 2002) re-confirming how on that "Gloomy Sunday" afternoon I was introduced to the most influential female singer / songwriter in my life. Heather Speaks.."Anti Pop Heroine"...Interview April 2002 Heather Nova cannot abide by stereotypes. In an interview i found on Chartattack.com Heather discusses the new comparisons being drawn by her latest album "South" to the world of pop. "I think it's a shame that when it comes to being a female singer-songwriter that gender seems to have become a genre. Nova fully intends for her music to speak for itself, The thing with Heather is that she write poetry interwoven with music and there come over as a confessional, a tapestry, a melody with a soul and a her voice is the narrator, nothing can be cleaner or more honest. Its all a million miles from the seed of pop music culture today. "I think its important to be real about emotionand be real about life in songs, becauseI think those are the songs that really help other people. When you take a risk yourself, writing that song andbeing that open, those are usually the songs that are going to make someone feel less alone because they've gone through the same thing." Heather seems to be leading an industry backlash against manufactured entertainers who co- write one or two tracks from a multi-platinum album and sell them with sex and nakedness..."It's manufactured...they're entertainers and they're good at what they do, but they're not coming at it from the same angle I am because i am a writer. It's just different." With the current album fully released in many countries and already a European tour under her belt Heather states that "South was not written with a specific theme in mind", although she says it "illustrates her struggle with a harmony between her life and her dreams. I think dreams are important because they keep you moving forward, but they can paralyze you if you are too attached to them". South Heather's current release "South" was released in October 2001 and includes a progression of a vocal, mellow rock sound to a poppier forum, with edgy and inspiring songs such as "I'm No Angel" and "Heaven Sent" whilst keeping Heather's distinctive and beuatiful lyrical masterpieces in "Talk To Me" and "Just Been Born".

Walk This World.. The book of poetry from heather is now online and you can take a look at the website by using the following link www.thesorrowjoy.com eather is featured covering the Beatles Classic "We Can Work It Out" on the multi million selling soundtrack to the Michelle Pfeiffer, Sean Penn movie "I Am Sam". The album is a tribute to the works of The Beatles. Other artists including Nick Cave, Sheryl Crow, Sarah Mclachlan, Stereophonics and The Black Crowes have contributed versions to old songs. The latest release in Europe is from the current V2 label mate and uk band Eskobar. Heather and Eskobar co-wrote "Someone New" which has peaked already at No.1 in Sweden, and is nominated for A Swedish music award this Spring. The video is available to watch at www.eskobar.com The "South 2001/2002 tour" has taken in over 8 countries all over Europe and finishes in Birmingham UK, July 23rd. It is sad to report that Heather has finally decided to leave V2 records, my hunch is that a refusal to allow the American tour go ahead has fuelled Heather to look elsewhere with also the pressure to go pop another key factor.
Birmingham Glee Club Review Heather came onstage as the third act and the headline from the week long writers showcase at the Glee Club. The set was acoustic and similar to the first gig i saw in Cambridge last October(01). No new surprises here although Heather was in fine vocal form and also in an exuberent mood as she played three extra song including the acoustic Saturday Night Fever classic hit. A fantastic night!
Why Heather refused to bow to commerical pressure! As the last studio proved Heather Nova could write upbeat melodies (I'm No Angel, Like Lovers Do and Heaven Sent). V2 were happy with the results although they were becoming more and more demanding on how they wanted to portray Heather and they were also keen to create a new poppier image to increase sales. Something Jewel has succumbed to with her latest "Intuition". Heather refused to make herself about the image and not the music, thus came the split. Heather returned to Big Cat! |
Biography Heather Frith was born 6th July 1968, Bermuda. The singer songwriter's childhood was spent on the family's yacht cruising around the carribean ( Heather has a brother Mishka b1974). Her early interest in music intensified aged 19 when she moved to Providence to study painting and film at Rhode Island School of Design. She did not venture into the local rock scene but instead wrote her own musical scores for her own films. Inspired by Patti Smith and Lou Reed she soon started writing songs and putting together demo's, the first one appearing in 1990. The name changed occured around this time as Nova replaced Frith. The low key album "These Walls" (re-released in 1997 as "The First Recordings") introduced her to ex Killing-Joke guitar player Youth who released her first album on his own label "Butterfly". The album now sold through her current label V2 was called "Glowstars" and appeared in 1993. As interest grew Heather's work she supported The Cranberries and Bob Mould and her unique spine tingling live performances gained her a live album release in 1993 entitled "Blow" released on the Big Cat Records label. Nova then collaborated with Youth on her first full studio backed album "Oyster", which included the controversial autobiograhical song titled "Island" and the billboard radio hit "Walk this World". Protractyed recording sessions and her first signing to a major label V2 meant her next album "Siren" was released in 1998 and some say the impact on the songs themselves dampened down Heather's distinctive style. The album was a commercial success selling over a million copies and is her best selling album to date. In 2000 Heather returned to the live stage releasing a third live album recorded in Cologne and titled "Wonderlust". The next year her second release on the V2 record label "South" was backed by a UK and European tour. The album pushed Heather into a Sheryl Crow sound yet still included the disrtintive lyrics and vocal sounds that made all those waves back in 1990. In 2003 Heather is with old label Big Cat records (uK) and were promised an acoustic album back to her roots, "Storm" will see Heather take to the road all over the World, do not miss this opportunity to discover the life and soul of female vocalist and writers throughout this generation.
2,000 Experience Heather Live in London Just before 9 O'Clock Heather graced the stage (with bump) and began what was her most electrifying concert yet. The third time seeing her was by far the most liberating and the venue certainly helped make it a very special night. Union Chapel in Islington, London provided the setting for a performance mixed with acoustic and accompanying band to guide the audience through every emotion and Heather also debued brand new material from her new album "Storm". Highlights from the new album performed were, "All I Need", "Let's Not Talk About Love", "Let Me be Your Light" and the moody and irresistable title track "Storm". The set was focused around the main alter and Heather mixed in some "oldies" which kept the crowd at the edge of there pues. Her vocals always blow me away, her high notes have to be heard to be appreciated and above all it was superb to see so much support for an artist who has remained true to her muscial craft after 12 years of refusing to sellout to boost record sales.
"Storm" (2004) 1) Lets Not Talk About Love 2) You Left Me A Song 3) Drink It In 4) River Of Life 5) One Day In June 6) Storm 7) I Wanna Be Your Light 8) Aquamarine 9) All I Need 10) Everytime 11) Fool For You
Amazon.co.uk Review STORM An intimate, lovelorn thing, Storm finds the Bermuda born Heather Nova on reflective form while collaborators Mercury Rev apply th elightest of musical touches. Rife with emotional honesty and tendor muscial subtelty, Storm was largely recorded in Mercury rev's studio, nestled in the heights of woodstock's snow capped mountains. While heather's voice is as sweet as an angel, she's clearly one thats been to hell and back. Not for her the syrup-strewn lusty love ballad. Storm rumbles with a guilty intensity thats unrelenting on the likes of "Lets Not Talk About Love" and the haunting admission of adultery "One Day In June". Carefully crafte, highly composed and not a little uncompromising, Storm is a sublime mix of lush melodies and candid poetic lyricism that is arguably Nova's career best.
