| Kylie Minogue |
| Deconstructing Kylie During the late 1980's, the music scene was dominated by a new brand of pop. Hit makers Stock/Aitken and Waterman had produced a factory floor production line of hit songs with many forgetful faces and names to boot. Kylie is the only name and face to survive the press invasions, the backstabbing and established herself strangely as a musical phenomenon. Never before had an artist begun a career with such strong sales and recordbreaking statistics. By 1992 Kylie was restless, her need to move on and discover new fresh muscial influences post Michael Hutchence drove her to sign with DeConstruction Records in London. She wanted musical freedom, they gave it to her, by choosing a label only famous for dance act M-People, Kylie would face the hardest challenge in her career. She literally turned her back on success and walked the other way, this is something that has kept her fans so intirgued and loyal over her now 14 year career. |

Album Review It has been said that this album never quite succeeded in winning over the title of "Cool Kylie". At the time, the music industry was fast turning against pop acts. They were not celebrated like in 2000, and Kylie tried to steer a new path. The result was her lamely adding her last name to the album title, suggesting that this was the "real" her, something we now know change daily,if Kylie ever stopped recording her fans will never stop arguing over which album was the "real" Kylie. Still, It was evidence that by using her image she could continue to sell and by making striking videos the antipodean princess would continue to amuse and titilate. So 1994 may not have been a memorable release year for Kylie but for fans it marked a step in the right direction, in the face of opposition Kylie stands tall and she would have to with this attempt at the music world. Deconstructing Kylie never quite worked because she didn't feel totally at ease with what was happening. Stock, Aitken and Waterman found magical ingredienst inside Kylie to produce successful music. It seems the magic faded after track 4 here, and Kylie gamely holds on to the notes as she holds onto her career. It promised much but Kylie's cool world was invaded by too many people and few found those magic ingedients S/A/W discovered in 1987. 8/10 A Good Start.. The Webmaster. 1999-2002 Copyright |

| I Can Keep A Secret...Decide to Confide Confide In Me was a totally new sound, new vocal and a new confidant alluring Kylie. Everything about this song was astonishing, the media was astounded how this was Kylie. The song entered the UK charts at No.2 and it seemed to be an incredible moment for the girl down under. Sue Foster said at the time, "Kylie signed to DeConstruction because they are a well respected dance label. Her music's has always been dance, but now it will have an edge. Her fans need'nt worry though this is going to be a progression for her." There was no doubting how vocally strong Kylie had become. There was a line of producers, notably the Anderson/Seamen produced Confide In Me with it's orchestral beginnings and string arrangements vital in producing one of the finest singles of her career to date. Kylie remembers the trying times though when meeting with them all. "I was feeling like a ping pong ball for a while with an American and English producers both wanting different things." |
| Put Yourself In My Place It was notable how many tracks were left off this album than how many tracks made it. Just ten made the cut.. 1. Confide In Me 2. Surrender 3. If I Was Your Lover 4. Where Is The Feeling? 5. Put Yourself In My Place 6. Dangerous Game 7. Automatic Love 8. Where Has The Love Gone 9. Falling 10. Time Will Pass You By The Rapino Brothers had just one inclusion on the album (track 7) out of a possible ten recorded. St. Etienne's efforts were also discounted although we were treated to "Nothing Can Stop Us Now" on the Confide In Me cd single. The Pet Shop Boys were successful in producing the track Falling, although the original version was changed and made "poppier". Kylie's Cool World If it seems like the album was a mix and match then it was, there are great tracks which stand out away from the other's, "Dangerous Game" is sung quite beautifully and the ground breaking sound and beat to "If I Was Your Lover" was a missed opportunity of a release stateside. So while the album is a work in progress, it was a two year project which was limited in it's success. The good news was the album allowed Kylie to perform at festivals and on MTV, most memorably on the Ray Cokes evening show with her band and sounding the best she ever had, it was clear that there was more to come from Kylie and she just needed to right people to showcase the right songs. Amazingly the album today sounds still fresh and it's vocal arrangements have not dated so much. It is a album which has produced a longer shelf life than initally expected. I still listen to it and the magical moments lift it up from just being a mediocre attempt. Confide In Me and Put Yourself In My Place are indeed used on her live set's to great effect. Kylie's first steps away from the chains of S/A/W were not smooth but her vocal delivery was and the production was polished and well constructed by Jimmy Harry, who has gone on to work closely with Janet Jackson. Sales in the UK topped 500,000, with 2 million worldwide.. Album Credits: Kylie Minogue - Primary Artist, writer. Jimmy Harry - Arranger, Producer. Tim Bran - Assitant Producer. Doug deAngelis - Engineer - Mixing. Niall Flynn - Assitant Engineer. Paul West - Engineer Mixing. Pete Heller - Producer. Gary Wilkinson - Engineer.
