SHOCK! HORROR! and Galliano!
For the first time in any capacity I would see Kylie Minogue live in cocert. I went to see the Let's Get To It Tour when it arrived at Wembley Arena, sometime in the Autumn of 1991. If You Were With Me Now was climbing into the Top 5 of the UK singles chart in the midst of what was the Kylie backlash in the UK. I could easily report how the paper's attacked her style and her outfits and the suddenly raunchy and slutty appearence of Kylie onstage but I will not. I think I was around 13 at the time and I loved every second of the Let's Get To It tour. OK the video was awful and really failed to capture any amount of anything from the show, but I distincly remember that I left Wembley that night loving every second. It always remains to this day how I underestimate her voice. It has I guess been the easiest thing to attack about Kylie, yet every time it amazes me. From the opening robotic march onto the stage into the opening number Step Back In Time through to the only (to this date) true rendition of I Should Be So Lucky (i.e. natural 45rpm speed) Kylie never once lipsync's and carries of the ballads "Finer Feelings" and "Let's Get To It" with ease. Infact theres something about the title track which still lifts me today. It is a mature song sung quite beautifully. There are silly moments in "I Guess I Like It Like That" and also the poor cover of "Love Train" but the appearence of Jazzi P (spots and all) to the funked up "Shocked" still brings back memories of happiness. The outfits all masterminded by John Galliano were typically Kylie, at the time she wanted to make a statement and who better than John. At the time is was misjudged and badly received but even in 1991 Kylie knew exactly who was to design her clothes and looking at where Galliano has progressed in his career, her choice shows he panache for trend setting. A few trademarks were set here and have stayed to this day. they are Kylie amazing ability to sing and dance in 5 inch heels, plus her ability to wear leather pants with zips everywhere and look stunning, but the most memorable moment for me is how Kylie can wear gold lame to such great effect, there are the beginnings of what made Light Years Light Years and Kylie the huge Icon she is today. So the production team failed to re create my memories, and the press were trying to pin every negative story at Kylie's door, she just waved them by and on stage she was nothing but professional, especially when it was her first taste of the inside of the 15,000 seat Wembley Arena.
