Vilnius Gediminas
Technical University is a modern higher school with significant educational
and research achievements. We tried to find our own way among other European
educational institutions and today Vilnius Gediminas Technical University
welcomes everybody who is eager and has ability to study here. Thus, we are
realizing the idea written into the coat of arms of the university:
"spare aude" (strive for wisdom). We hope that cooperating with us you
will enjoy results.
The history of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University begins on 1st
September on 1956 when the Evening department of KPI was established in
Vilnius as a separate educational unit and later (1969) it was renamed into
Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute.
On October 31, 1990 the Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute attained the
status of Vilnius Technical University. In 1996 it got the name of
Gediminas, the Grand Duke of Lithuania. The structure of study and training
organizations has greatly changed since that time, new courses have been
introduced, more and more attention has been paid to humanitarian aspects of
technical education.
Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) comprises 8 faculties:
Environmental Engineering, Architecture, Electronics, Fundamental Sciences,
Mechanics, Civil Engineering, Transport Engineering, Business Management and Antanas Gustaitis Aviation Institute. There is also an International Study
Centre, 8 research institutes, 6 research centers, 19 research laboratories,
publishing office "Technika", 6 hostels comprising approximately 25% of the
total number of students, recreational facilities, cafes, canteens, clubs,
etc.
The highest decision-making body is University Council and Senate. The
University is governed by the Rector assisted by four Vice-Rectors, the
Chancellor and Directors of administrative subdivisions. Researchers &
academic staff make 789 persons, including 115 professors, 427 associate
professors and Doctorial degree holders 59 researchers. Administrative staff
is 108. |
