Strategy For The Development Of The Bahamas

After much thought, today I have discovered the main factors that have contributed to the lack of development in the entire Bahamas. These factors are simple and fundamental.

As they relate to my island, Eleuthera, they have had a profound negative impact on the island as a whole. The other islands of the Bahamas have found similar fate as their migration patterns and societies have been the same.

There are only two main reasons people leave the islands, Education and Business\Employment opportunities. All other needs in the human psyche fall into place and are met when these two needs are met. A society filled with Educated, smart people encourage each other to grow in opportunity and potential. Fulfill the needs in these areas and one will see the human environment flourish into something of its greatest potential. The social atmosphere becomes vibrant and filled with positive illuminated human beings who strive to fulfill and build on the needs of their society.

To combat the social ills in our cities two things need to be established immediately on each island. To reverse the generational damage caused by the migration patterns followed by many generations of Bahamians these two factors need to be generated and established in our societies in order for us to realize some immediate positive results from our involvement. In my formulation of ideas an immediate turn around can be realized in our Out Island societies within a matter of four years should the implementation of , one a major accredited college facility, and secondly an increase in employment and wage earning opportunities for local residents.

The formula is an easy one.

This year Eleuthera is poised to become the recipient of millions of dollars in development funds. These contributions to our island through private, foreign businessmen seeking to reap the rewards of  assisting with the most immediate development needs of our golden islands is a turn around in the plight of the island of Eleuthera.

This cycle of investment in hotel properties has happened before in our society, in the middle fifties and Sixties, extending up to the early seventies. These employment opportunities were only half the puzzle and they failed because the lack of self confidence and self sustaining ability of the indigenous community were not in place. Our self confidence and our cohesiveness as a people were not intact. After the decline of the Tourism industry in Eleuthera we sought to leave home in search of Employment elsewhere and in search of Education opportunities.

This time around I hope that our leaders, community and government, will pay close attention to empowering each local resident to not only seek employment at one of the establishing tourist facilities but will work to establish an accredited college institution where local residents can study in order to promote their own innate abilities in order to grow in unison with the local economy.

We Bahamians alone have the mandate to build Eleuthera. It can be done. It takes cohesiveness and stability among differing ethnic people in our society. It takes a healing of the impoverished mentality which exists in our communities for too long

We’ve been adrift too long as a society to come to strength over night however. Establishing these facilities and granting us employment and empowerment opportunities are the key to accomplishment and only the first step in the right direction. Each person must be seen to take the pride needed to preserve our Island and our human and ecological societies for the long-term.

Our overt political differences have to be eliminated. Hatred and bigotry have no place in the new Eleuthera. Only healing and tolerance, a lack of violent behavior and the acceptance of a peaceful society are the keys to our continued longetivity.

There’s no turning back we must act quickly and implement our strategies now before the opportunity burns out, as happened before.

The entire point being that indigenous people have the right to and need to be educationally and economically sustained in their own local environment in order for their productivity and culture as a people to thrive and  remain intact as a unique, surviving species.  We seek to develop a means through our local development to create a tourism product that will both attract and service the world. We wish to become  accomplished contributors to world society and not just an insecure subservient people.
