2003 Weather It is a beautiful
morning in Eleuthera today. The birds are chirping this morning, its quite
sunny and the clouds are gathering in the sky, perhaps for some afternoon
rain. There is a 65-70% chance of
rain today. It’s a wonderful day for the outdoors and beach
activities. News It is reported to me
that all of the schools in south Eleuthera are donated two computers each.
These computers are to be installed within a weeks time at each of the
schools in south Eleuthera. This goes a long way in determining and improving
the computer literacy rate in schools here on the island. Lucky To Live in The Bahamas. By George Major I can’t get over the feeling of being lucky when I enter a chatroom on the internet and announce that I’m from the Bahamas. They seem to envy me because of where I live Mostly because of the glory of the warm winters we have here. Several things are obvious; people associate the word Bahamas with someplace warm and fabulous, since it is. Another thing is that the Bahamas has a great reputation and name abroad and deservedly so. It has worked long and hard on its tourism promotions and they have paid off. But there are other issues associated with living in the Bahamas that may not be so obvious to the average person thinking about the Bahamas. Like the extremities of hot and cold which exist between our winters and our summers. And the cost of air-conditioning needed during the extremely warm summers here in the Bahamas. I’m of the opinion that the vast majority of Bahamians hate the heat of summer as much as Americans and Canadians hate the coldness of their extreme winters. Some comparisons can be made here. Like the fact that both heating in the winter and cooling in the summer are done in both locations at a tremendous cost for fuel. For example one Kilowatt-hour in the Bahamas costs more than 25 cents. Electricity and fuel are costly commodities in the Bahamas and elsewhere. In order to escape the heat of summer, which has just begun, most Eleuthera islanders gather at the seashore in the evenings in order to experience daily some of the cool breezes blowing of off the Caribbean sea just in front of the village. This brings the relief needed to abide the warm summers days here on the island. So during the summer which is from June to October the beach is filled in the warm evenings with sea bathers or just the average person trying to catch some of the breeze and get some relief from the heat of the day. When winters cool breezes come I sing praises; at the end of winter I dread the coming of summer. So don’t think you have it all bad if you don’t live in the Bahamas. And don’t think we have it all good because we do. This summer heat issue all aside, one can be considered somewhat lucky to be living here in the Bahamas. Fishing report Since many of our
tourist visitors who mostly visit during the winter have gone back home to
enjoy the summer away from Eleuthera there is less demand for fresh fish
products. Many of the fishermen continue to fish daily and store their excess
fish in their freezers during the summer months. So if you don’t want to wait
for the fishermen at the docks you can get frozen fish just caught a few days
ago at most of the homes of the fishermen. See you at the docks in Tarpum
Bay, Eleuthera for fresh fish products daily. More news from

2003 Weather Today’s weather was
great. There was a nice warm temperature, which got up to around 87 degrees
Fahrenheit along with a partially cloudy covered sky. There was a 70% chance
or rain today however it did not rain. All in all it was a beautiful day for
all to enjoy. News There were no
outstanding significant events occurring on the island of Eleuthera today,
other than the usual daily work week activities. Life on an island By George Major Believe it or not.
Life on and island is quite peculiar after the novelty of island life has
worn off after many years. While the initial beauty of the tropical landscape
is astonishing to see for perhaps the first few hundred times, it becomes the
usual fare after a few years and is not as appealing as it was first thought
to be. Not to say that nature is dull. Tropical nature is as beautiful and
astonishing as it ever once was. The boredom may be more due to ones own
personal daily regiment. While you in the
city in the morning are out dealing with the traffic and the crowded
transportation systems Islanders are already at work. Having risen early,
they have prepared for the day. Often there is a small stream of traffic
afoot during the last half hour when government employees make it to work
before just before the nine-oclock hour. Then gently, just as it began,
traffic is ended for the day. There is no long parade to the office only a
slow parade to the self owned businesses in each little community often in
reach of the owners home where he can slowly in the early morning stroll to
work and await the village traffic of the day. Most business people on the
island of Eleuthera are self-employed. Entertainment is
another worry. Generally, there are no theatres; no stage plays other than
those put on by the local church o the public schools during the few holiday
seasons of the year like Easter and Christmas holidays. So there is no rush
to go anywhere just organize ones own personal entertainment for the evening.
Often that will be a good book for the conscientious island reader or a movie
on the multichannel satellite system, which has become a necessary appliance
on the island landscape in this the modern age. No need to go anywhere other
than to the local Travellers rest or to the neighbourhood bar to shoot a game
of pool and wash your sins away in some sweet brew encouraged by island
societies everywhere. Island life can be quite repetitive and lonely at
times. Islanders are largely quiet and withdrawn; others are gentle and
friendly if approached. Many stick to themselves and deal with their problems
in isolation. The warm season can be expensive with air conditioning necessary
and irritating when the seasons are long and winters cooling weather takes a
long time to come around. But the seasons when the beaches, water and natural
environment are in play make up for the lonely times and refresh the lonely
mind filling it with the wonderment and joy of Gods great nature and the
island neighbourhood. Life on an island is different, see it and enjoy it
when you can. Fishing report There are several
groups of fishermen who fish daily off of the shores of Eleuthera and do
quite well at supplying fresh quantities of fish for the consumption of the
islanders and the visitors alike. There is a growing number of new fishermen
also as youngsters join the fishing teams, usually made up of extended family
groups of men and a few women. Fishing is a hard job and demands a measure of
respect since the fishermen face certain dangers daily. Sharks and the
possibility of mechanical motor failure are some of the dangerous conditions
fishermen face daily. They tell stories about these things from time to time.
So if your in Eleuthera and love fresh fish products do support the local
fishing industry by buying fresh fish products from the docks at Tarpum Bay,
Eleuthera daily. More news from

2003 Weather Today the rain
subsided. The ay was a warm one with much cloud cover. The temperature rose
today to 89 degrees. The sun was out with partially clouded skies. There was
a 65% chance of rain today. Enjoy the weather and the outdoors in Eleuthera
today. News People are seeking
meaining in life these days. A sense of accomplishment and achievement in the
face of the general order of things is prevalent in our society. People are
overwhelmed with issues of technologies and other pressing concerns of the
day because of the onslaught of a dwindling economy and an erosion in the
general social society. Generally people are not as forgiving and as friendly
as they used to be in days gone by because of new stresses and modern
concerns. However there is a general sense of well being and security through
the friendliness and the gentile nature of our society. The day wore on
quietly without much excitement and infusion from the outside. Generally our
visitors create our excitement when we see them touring our lovely
surroundings and enjoying our accoutrements of nature and the like. Our beaches remain
pure and untouched and the warmth of the sun signifies the warm intentions in
the hearts of men of the island of Eleuthera. Pleasantry, safety and security
are the order of the day. Enjoy Eeuthera and do come again. On a Sunday AfternoonBy George Major Today was a particularly beautiful, eventful day. It is Sunday and there is nothing else to do in the village of Tarpum Bay other than ones own personal entertainment to which he is already accustomed to. To sit on a park bench at Travellers rest in front of the ocean to gossip a bit with friends and contemplate the really important questions of life. Well in that pursuit today I went to the house of a great friend living on the outskirts of the community in order to deliver a Cdrom which was left within a computer he had looked at a few weeks earlier for me. In so doing, and once I had arrived it was found that I would like to stay and have some light conversation discussing local matters in the community. Sort of test the banality of the common man against the wit of a well educated, experienced Canadian businessman. As we do from time to time, discuss investment news that is related to the local community. As such and in conversation, we discovered that there were two projects that were on the drawing board that were about to take place. The North Windermere Island development which the funding had been already acquired for and the Jacks Bay development project of which my friend assured me that the investors were still quite interested. We talked about various subjects pertaining to the continuing lack of economic development in the South Eleuthera community. He assured me that this place was unique. He himself through friends and contacts knew of approximately fifty million dollars worth of proposed capital investments that did not meet the approval of the Bahamian government for this area. I was astonished at this and assured him that this was alarming because this area of ours, South Eleuthera, needs any investment at all that it can attract. Prior to that discussion we had rambled on and on about literature. I was discussing with him my new found hopes and ideas I had found in Ernest Hemingways, “ A moveable feast,” and in Thoreau’s,”Walden pond.” I found that he had already read much of these literary works and added greatly to the discussion his opinions on classical literature and that particular genre. That is what I find so appealing about discussing topics with my friend. I find him almost infinitely knowledgeable concerning the little bright matters of my own mind. He is able to both elaborate further and enlighten me on many of my own ideas and bring into focus the central theme of many of my ideas and allow me to positively focus on some meaningful aspect of the conversation. As we continued to move on and on into matters concerning the local press and why they were not able to carry my daily internet based community column written, expressly for expatriate Eleutherians, family and friends living abroad in the United States and other parts of the world, he informed me that it, in his opinion and as a friend, was simply a matter of quality and format. We formulated in our conversation that should I be able to conjure up some more imaginative, structured pieces of writing for my daily column he would assure me that he would assist me in producing a professional cover letter and assist me in finding about two or three worthy publications which would be willing to accept my writing, perhaps offer me syndication rights to produce much more of the same quality articles as we had discussed. I accepted the challenge to write at least three worthy daily columns and deliver them to him for his editing and inspection by Wednesday of this week. It was such a beautiful Sunday and as I walked out of his beautiful open house. We were assured of this lovely day by the bright sunlight and the beauty of his lovely flower garden surrounding his house. I made my way to my vehicle inspired and filled with interminable joy that I would begin the process of creating a new impetus in our local community by first writing a more determined daily column with the utmost attention to thought and quality. I had hoped and expressed to pursue the common details of life shared by every common man throughout the world and relate them to our own local community. I am about to begin that focus daily. I implore you, the common reader, to expect more from me in this daily column. Fishing report Fishing at the
waterfront fish market of Tarpum Bay
has resumed due to the change in the pleasantry of the weather. About six
fishing groups left our shores toda and returned with a bounty of good
seafood for the delight of our visitors and our local population. If you
would like to urchase quantities of fresh seafood products we’ll see you at
the docks at the waterfront at Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera. More daily news

2003 Weather A rainy day in
Eleuthera today. The skies have been overcast most of the day and finally
some significant amounts of rain for farmers and the fresh water table. It
has been a long time since significant rains in Eleuthera. We were going
through somewhat of a drought for the last few months and finally some
downpours today. The temperature is a warm 86 degrees and there is a slight
breeze over the island. The waterfront is picking up as a coldfront has set
in. This means a significant change in the weather pattern. However the
beaches are still nice and outdoor activities are quiet pleasant at this
temperature. News At www.eleu.net Kristel is reporting that their
shipment of ten computers for the north Eleuthera district have been
successfully delivered and will be installed in short order. These computers
were donated through a program instituted and looked after by Kristel and she
would be happy to arrange shipment for any donated Pentium computer donated
to the cause of supplying the schools of Eleuthera and the communities with
computer networks. This in an effort to further assist the island with
computer acess and literaracy. This is a noteworthy and a notble cause for
which the people of Eleuthera are both happy and proud of. We would like to go out thanking both
Kristel and Jim for their efforts over the past few months in organizing this
effort and for the donation of all
involved with the project. In other news and as
reported in the Nassau Guardian(www.thenassauguardian.com)
on this website a few weeks ago it was reported that the government of the
Bahamas was about to looking into the practice of second home ownership
rental and the use of such properties as rental or commercial facilities in
the Bahamas. The government has decided that while this practice is
beneficial in some communities they do not want the practice to interfere
with the local home renters market for Bahamians and community hotels. The
government of the Bahamas is therefore moving to implement a program of
second home registration or issue permits in certain communities for second
home rental where the practice best serves the community and adds an
additional asset to the local hotel
room avaliability in that community. Since many of these homes adds
significant financial advantages to the community the practice is looked upon
favourably by the Bahamian government and people and will continue under the
new permit registration process in certain communities around the islands of
the Bahamas. We welcome second
home ownership in our communities and are pleased when homeowners can realize
some financial rewards from their investments while at the same time
benefiting the local communities by providing both jobs and additional
commercial inflow. The Bahamas market is advantageous in its tourism pursuits
and encourages this practice by foreign investors. Fishing report
Most fishing in the
local markets is suspended temporarily due to the influx of unfavourable
weather. Fishing will resume as soon as the weather and unfavourable seas
return to normal. During such periods it may not be safe for small boaters to
frequent the surrounding waters due to high, stormy seas and the like. In
addition the waters are usually muddy and unfavourable to the local fishing
enterprise. We would advise calling ahead or watching the weather when
considering coming to Tarpum Bay to purchase fresh fish products. More daily news from

2003 Weather Warm and sunny again
in Eleuthera. Only partially cloudy skies today with a 60% chance of rain.
The temperature is a warm 84 degrees farenheit today with a slight breeze
over the landscape. It is a great day for the outdoors and the beach. Enjoy
the weather in Eleuthera today. News Eleuthera enjoyed a
delightful Easter holiday. There were three separate homecomings on the
island and Three foreign/tourist weddings held here on the island. Some of
our friends from the states were here to part take in the joyful events. Kristel and Jim flew
down and completed their mission of bringing down the second shipment of
computer terminals for the Computer centers of North Eleuthera. The donated
items will be installed in the North Eleuthera area making an addition to the
already installed computers in the computer centers there. South Eleuthera has
no computer centers other than Haynes library however there is a project
underway through some friends of Eleuthera from Chicago to establish two
computer centers in the settlement of Tarpum Bay in the near future. These
contributions will go a long way to achieving computer access and
computerliteracy in the south Eleuthera area. Should you have any
contributions to these computer centers you can contact George Major @ [email protected] and make
arrangements to have them transported to the South Eleuthera area. Fishing Report Fishing has resumed
and our fishermen are busy at sea these days since the weather has become
favourable. You can purchase your supplies of fresh seafood down at the docks
at Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera this afternoon after 3pm. See you there. Fishermen
in Tarpum Bay are already looking forward to the coming grouper season since
the last was the most productive for our local fishermen ever. There will be
much activity this winter harvesting the grouper once the season opens. More news from

2003 Weather An unfortunate bit
of weather to report to you today. This afternoon there has been an
impressive amount of rain in Eleuthera, at least in the south. The
temperature was around 79 degrees in the morning and in the afternoon the
clouds built up and the rain came in.
It’s a wet afternoon and evening most unusual for Eleuthera although you know
we need the rain for the farmers sometime. That way everybody gets what they
want. News A great weekend in
the planning for Eleuthera as the Easter holiday comes on. There is lots of
activities planned at the three separate homecoming events and there will be
a lot of new people in town for these events. We look forward to them. As a glimpse to you
of what living in paradise might be like, this poem: Cornerstone of paradise The Bahamas gave its best for me When our heritage set us free And like the great democracy did long to be As equal as mankind I say it best, as best I know Forefathers gave and yet I grow For in this knowledge came To know it better to be free And yet we struggle with this cause But must not seem to set it lost That it’s a final and just a cause To be true and free Like God did give his son to die The greatest story of mankind I hold it high that I did try To set my country free I live this life with hallowed Edge and long to see the day I wed My daughters and my sons be led To see equality be free I give now in the gilded age Excited now to turn the page And won’t it be like just the rage That heavens just like we For in this fight we lost a man A life to whom God to us gave That in his time he too was brave To set the captives free And in his life he penned the cause That ne’er would see his brothers lost And sisters left to count the cost Of our beauty and our free And now with eternity in mind Our goodness now to all mankind We welcome all into our bind And we does set them free Free to be happy, light and gay Free in every justful way, freedom now we light the way The Bahamas land of the free Fishing report Fishing has resumed and there has been lots of fish netted by our local fishermen. The varieties of fresh pan frying fish is quite diverse. You have the red snapper, which is a favorite among the locals. Then you have the jack fish. It is good too for frying. Next in line you have the gray snapper and the young tuna, or Amaco. They are nice but not as tasty as the red snapper. There are also lots of fishing trap caught fish to be had daily in Tarpum Bay as well. So if your looking for fresh fish, see you at the fish market in Tarpum Bay. a great day for the outdoors and the beach. Enjoy the lovely weather in
Eleuthera today. News Monday was a quiet day in Eleuthera with not much out of
the ordinary happening. Easter is coming next weekend and we’re all looking
forward to the three homecomings being held by three separate villages on the
island. Rock Sound will be holding their homecoming celebration and lots of
visitors, including Bahamians residing in Nassau and other parts of the
country will be there. There will also be homecoming celebrations in James
Cistern and Lower Bouge to the northern end of the island. All promise to be
fun. As Eleutherians tune in to the war in Iraq and
Afghanistan on the television we all realize that we have felt the effects of
the war globally. The Bahamas has about twenty of its citizens fighting these
wars along side the Americans with the American or US armies. Just this poem as we contemplate the war from our island
of Eleuthera: After the war As the moon hangs High in its afterglow And collects its Shadows for the night I sit amongst the total calm. As the shore laps with the tide The seas calming effect sets in. Mr. Bush’s armies alive And well, with few causalities, shelled Afghanistan Then Bagdad with furious Delight. They are quiet Now and their ardent Remnants bring us The glory of travelling Tourists that love our City of God. Our Homeland archipelago, free of cries And tears, no snipers on The roof tops or vicious Characters bring a delight With the coming of the night. It foreshadows our future And gives us hope as economies Collide after the war. Our island sleeps, Our after prize of freedom Far from the glow of bombs On the horizon. We all Have paid a tremendous Price as our Island sleeps After the war Fishing report Fishing is once again on hold due to the unclement
weather around the seas in Eleuthera. Once the winds settle fishing will

holiday break would do us fine now after the long trek from Christmas however
it means that the year is wearing on at an incredible pace. Looks like the
mid, hot summer weather will be here soon. Two men from Tarpum Bay have died during the past two
weeks. Mr. Kenneth Cigar Knowles and another Bay man who resides in Nassau.
There will be at least one funeral here during the easter holidays. That will
sadden the affair for us during the holidays. Fishing report Fishing continues during this break in the weather

year. That situation would be a welcome. Enjoy the cool Eleuthera weather.
This weather is still ideal during the days to enjoy the beach. News Today was mailboat day. Today was the best day for shopping

The temperature tonight is expected to dip down to the mid fifties. This is a
dramatic change in weather only a few days ago we were so warm we thought
summer had already arrived and now this cooling trend. Its unexpected and a
bit confusing. The temperature today got up to the mid seventies with winds
as high as 25knots in gusts from the sea. The island is cool however the sun
was out for much of the day with only a little light rain in the afternoon.
It’s a great day for touring the island and doing other outdoor activities.
Enjoy the island weather today and have a great time in Eleuthera. News Today we are left a little sad, our friends from Chicago
have gone home. We had a fantastic week or more enjoying our island with them
and having some fun at EB’s club. It was a great trip for them and we hope
they come again soon. Bye Carmen, Bye Sarah, Bye Lisa and Bye Tasha. We will
miss you until you return again probably at Christmas time. We’ll be here

works soon for Tarpum Bay and its residents and visitors. The computer center
will be the result of an effort by some of the visiting guests to the village
and our friends from Chicago who will be raising funds to fund the project.
Computers will be flown into Tarpum Bay from the United States and installed
in a network where the computer center is to exist. The facility will be
opened to all for the use of both our visitors and the community. It is a
welcomed project that cam really make a great impact on computer
literacy and lliteracy in general
locally. Tomorrow will be a great one as well since another group
of our friends will be coming down from the states. We expect Sharon and a
group from Chicago and Florida to spend some time with us down here in Tarpum
Bay having some fun on the beaches. They’re presence will be welcome in Tbay.

be here. So if you wish the best and most fresh produce shop at your favorite

when all the winter residents and many natives gather for a coffee social and
several games of scrabble. It promises to be a great time and a fun time for
all attending. Fishing report Since the weather has changed and the seas are rough
there will be no fish for a while until the weather changes. Unless you
purchase some freshly frozen fish from the home of one of the fishermen. When
the wind dies down and the weather changes then fishing will resume daily as
regularly scheduled each day. More news from Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera, Bahamas tomorrow. Back to top of page Back
to home/start page Saturday, 29 March 2003 Weather Another wonderful day of warm weather today. It was quite
warm as the morning rain began the day with a wet warm surface. The high
today crept up to eighty nine degrees, a reminder of our summer weather
already. I think its going to be a warm one this year. Enjoy the relatively cool days right now
because the days of summer are fastly approaching. News The Tarpum Bay public school is holding their grand fair today.
The entire day at the ball park beginning at noon and going on until the
supplies of food and drinks last. Baymen love to party so the bar is filled
and people are purchasing dinners prepared by the women of the community and
donated to the school fund raising campaign. The money will go towards the
efforts of the public school things like the annual Jr. Junkanoo contest and
other school activities not funded by the government. It’s another fun weekend in Tarpum Bay with the public
school fair and a softball game among the girls team of the settlement.
Another fun activity is hanging out at the local bars during the afternoons
and evenings on the weekend. I just left EB’s bar where I met some of our
recurring tourist friends from Chicago. Four lovely sisters from Chicago who
frequent our neighborhood were in attendance, having some fun and getting to
know the local people as they walked in. Its great to get together and meet
these beautiful rather friendly girls. So if your in town and looking for a great
place to hang out by the sea check out EB’s bar and snacks bayfront Tarpum
Bay, Eleuthera. Fishing Report Fishing continues in the small waterfront town of Tarpum
Bay as many gather at the water front to purchase quantities of delightful,
fresh supplies of fish products. The fishermen come in in the afternoon
around 2-6pm daily. So if your looking to purchase some fresh fish products,
see you at the waterfront fish market Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera as soon as you
can make it. See you there. More news from Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera, Bahamas tomorrow Back to top of page Back
to home/start page Wednesday, 26 March 2003 Weather A pleasant day in Eleuthera as the high got up to eighty
five with overcast skies and a high chance of rain. Although it was a dry
day. The sun came out in the afternoon and made it a great sunny afternoon
with lots of possibilities. Enjoy the weather in Eleuthera today especially
the beaches and the outdoors. News New rumors abound that the farm at Rock Sound is again up
for sale to an American agricultural group. Just recently a new proposal was
drawn up and our source says that the architecture work was done by an
American firm knowledgeable about the sale and the proposal. The historical
Chris Farm is a landmark in Eleuthera and has been in existence for over
fifty years. Much attempts have been made on an experimental basis to turn
the farm into a most productive property from the early fifties when it
began. The farm has had many agricultural successes and will be remembered as
a place where Eleuthera had a big chance with the right choice of crops to
become a very agriculturally productive place. The farm experimented with
many types of animals and exotic tropical vegetable and fruit species,
including its herds of horses and cattle. The last large scale product
produced by the Chris farm was the large scale production of a high grade
species of papaya fruit where the
farm produced the fruit on a very large scale and the produce was flown via
aircraft to the United States where it was sold. Now that the property is up for sale it is time to pause
and thank the owners of the Chris farm for their many years of innovative,
pioneering agriculture in our beautiful island of Eleuthera. Many people over
the years were employed by the farm along with its many longterm employees
who have been employed at the farm since its inception. Keep this date in mind, March 29th 2003.
Because from 2 to 6pm the annual Eleuthera Natural Arts and Crafts guild will
be holding their annual arts and crafts show at the historic mansion at
Unicorn Cay. The event promises, from the preparation and publicity, to be
one of the major annual events in Arts and Crafts on the island and will
become a much looked forward to event. There will be a display of more than
six of our local, talented Eleuthera artists. Painters who will be displaying
and selling their unique, wonderful works of art along with the sale of the
artistic creations of the Eleuthera natural arts and crafts guild. The guild
formed a few years ago by its forward looking founders with a vision for
growth and creativity in their artistic approach is a growing entity and will
be an ongoing experimental project aiming for the stability and growth of
natural art on the island of Eleuthera. So if your looking for a delightful afternoon of art and
elegance check out the group from the Eleuthera natural arts and crafts guild
in the mansion at Unicorn Cay, Banks road, Palmetto Point, Eleuthera. See you
there. Fishing report Fishing has resumed on the island since the change in the
weather so come on down to Tarpum Bay any afternoon at the docks and purchase
your supply of fresh fish products. At its peak there can be as much as eight
groups of fishermen arriving at varied times in the afternoons at the docks
daily. The most popular items caught daily are the Nassau grouper, Lobster,
conch, crabs and other varieties of pan frying fish. The lobster season ends
at the end of this month so get your fresh supplies while they last in Tarpum
Bay daily. After this only frozen lobster will be available at the homes of
fishermen who have supplies stored, caught during the regular lobster season.
See you there. More news from Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera, Bahamas tomorrow. Back to top of page back
to home/start page Tuesday, 25 March 2003 Weather Warm temperatures today as the sun is out and the skies
are clear and bright with only scattered clouds. There is only a slight
chance of rain today. We don’t expect it to rain in most areas of Eleuthera
today. The temperature today rose to the lower to middle eighties farenheit.
The temperature tonight will be dropping down into the mid to lower seventies
farenheit. The cooling trend continues, offering a good welcome break in the
warm summer weather we were having. Coolness and enjoyability in our weather
is always preferred. If we can have it cool, the tourists can get their tan
and play on the beach than that covers all. Everybody is happy on a day like
that. Enjoy the cool Eleuthera weather and look for the warmth to return in a
few days when this cold front clears out. News Its boat day again. The mail boat from Nassau came this
morning and brought all the islands fresh produce and products, mostly for
the grocery stores. Some natives have boxes of food stuffs sent directly to
them by their family members in the city of Nassau thus cutting down on the
cost of food for them on the island. Stores in Nassau generally have better
prices than the island stores for just about most products so a few islanders
who can wait for their merchandice do shop in Nassau. The M/V Eleuthera express and the M/V Daybreak bring most
of the goods on a weekly basis on Tuesdays for Eleutherians. Remember that
the produce in the stores is freshest today of all days. In other news the Cruise ship, The American, Canadian,
Cruise lines out of Rhode Island has docked at the docks in Governors Harbor
for the last two days. The cruise comes to Eleuthera and the Bahamas out of
Rhode Island twice during the winter tourist season and only twice. Usually the
stop overs and opportunity for their cruise passengers to tour the island of
Eleuthera for that two days is unscheduled. The crew of about 75 passengers
spent the last day taking taxi’s around the central Eleuthera area exploring
the island and generally enjoying the good time and hospitality of the people
of Central Eleuthera. We look forward to the return of that cruise ship
sometime during the winter of 2004. However small and insignificant we do
appreciate seeing their prescense on Eleuthera at this time. Our weekly Coffee social and scrabble meeting among we
Bahamians and our many winter home residents took place today at Haynes
library. It is a grand ocassion where participants bring homemade snacks and
other treats to share among each other. It is a wonderful way to meet some of
the local natives and the foreign homeowners on their best and most
affectionate terms. It is a great time for us all. Fishing The weather has improved somewhat today. Its not as rough
as was expected yesterday so perhaps there will be some fresh fish in the
harbor today. Its best to call Tarpum Bay ahead of time to find out before
making a long vain trip. Otherwise you can purchase frozen fish from the
homes of most fishermen. More news from Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera, Bahamas tomorrow Back to top of page Back
to home/start page Monday, 24 March 2003 Weather In a surprise weather pattern the temperature in Eleuthera
is getting cooler. A cold front has set in today and the temperature is
expected to drop into the mid seventies tonight with a chance of some rain.
Before this time temperatures like summer soared up into the low nineties
farenheit now suddenly this cooling trend with rough seas. Its still great
weather for the outdoors and the beach so enjoy the out doors. News In an election tonight the Tarpum Bay junkanoo committee
elected Mrs. Janet Hunt as president. Outgoing president Mr. Willie Knowles
said that he would accept his defeat as president for this year and pledged
to give his support to the committee in an attempt to bring great junkanoo to
Tarpum Bay and Eleuthera during the Christmas season. The fund raising activities of the junkanoo committee
will still be going on each weekend during the year as they set out to raise
as much funds as possible for the very expensive pleasure of junkanoo
entertainment. The affair this Christmas is expected to be a lavish affair
and much funding will be needed for musical instruments, pasting materials
and good cash prizes for the major groups competing for the much coveted
first prize during the annual Christmas and New years junkanoo parades. Junkanoo is an annual Christmas and New years cultural
tradition for the Bahamas. All over the Bahamas in every community junkanoo
parades are held drawing thousands of Bahamians out into the streets before
dawn on Christmas and New years day each year. The Street music celebration
of Junkanoo goes all the way back to the early 1800 and is a festival named
after one slave named john canoe who brought the celebration of Junkanoo out
from the land of Africa to the Bahamas. The street festival is a truly
memorable one and is similar to Brazilian and Trinidadian street carnivals
however it differs in that the paraders have to follow a strict code of
costume dress and must use un amplified percussion instruments including goat
skin drums, cowbells, whistles and lately marching band music has been added
to make the event more of a contemporary one with the musical and cultural
potential to rival other Caribbean street music festivals. Fishing report For the next few days while the seas are raging due to
the increased winds from the coldfront much of the daily fishing in the
village of Tarpum Bay and Eleuthera will be suspended until weather and sea
conditions improve. You can still purchase frozen fish and lobster from the
many homes in Tarpum Bay which store and accumulate fish for such occasions. More news from Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera, Bahamas tomorrow Back to top of page Back
to home/start page Wednesday, 19 March 2003 Weather A hot one to report today. The weather was quite warm.
Temperatures crept up into the lower nineties while the skies were clear and
bright. It was a good day all in all since there was a slight breeze creeping
over the island. Enjoy the beaches and the waters of Eleuthera. It was an
ideal day for tanning and enjoying the outdoors whether your fishing or
playing volleyball. News Its spring break in Eleuthera and the regular annual
college crowd are in town right now. There will be about ten beautiful girls
with their boyfriends and Liza’s group from Chicago. We got a chance to see
Julie and Liza today. Its going to be a great visit for them. The weathers
nice and warm after their cold winter experience and their friends are ready
now for some entertainment from such soothing company. The bars open and the
drinks are being poured as we speak. Come on down and have some fun. Fishing report It’s a great time for fishing, especially sports fishing.
The dolphin, marlin, tuna, barracuda and sail fish are running in the western
atlantic and the game fishing fishermen are around taking every opportunity
to get the big one. Its going to be a great fishing season this year since so
many people are in town to take advantage of the great warm weather and the
numerous fish running in the cool atlantic waters. More news from Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera, Bahamas tomorrow. Back to top of page Back
to home/start page Monday, 17 March 2003 Weather What a gorgeous warm day in Eleuthera today. The
temperature rose to the low 90’s while there was a slight breeze scattered
across the island. There was little chance of rain during the day but a
little shower came down in the central part of the island later this evening.
The humidity, as is usual was high and all in all it was a lovely Eleutherian
day. News There was a st. patricks day party held at the home of
Mark and Missy Adams. What a fine party it was. We all had a wonderful time
drinking Guinness and kalik beer and listening to the stories and jokes of
the Irish. It was a grand time and here is a poem I have written about the
event: The Irish party Went to an Irish party One lovely afternoon I knew I wouldn’t be leaving Because I got there soon And soon the host was calling For a group wide promenade As I sat and listened to the jokes Told in a country yard They told of priests and Irish humour I didn’t get all the slang But soon the Irish bitter And I didn’t give a damn Soon my turn came to give a poem Heart beating like a knife I rose to the occasion And sounded very nice A poem of jewelled Isles and settlers I gave with just a jolt As soon as I was finished I felt like I would bolt But like a country gentleman I turned and gave a bow And soon after the hostess Expressed that they allowed My poem with sweet acceptance Having never heard its kind And all that preparation I thought I’d lose my mind Fishing report Due to the inclement weather since the winds are high and
the seas rough the fishermen in Tarpum Bay did not go out fishing today.
Perhaps tomorrow, weather permitting they will resume fishing. Keep posted
and we’ll let you know whats happening at the fish market daily. More news from Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera, Bahamas tomorrow Back to top of page Back
to home/start page Saturday, 15 March 2003 Weather For the third time this year the rain is here. The day
was a nice one with temperatures going up into the lower nineties Fahrenheit.
The entire day was dry with a bright sun and partially clouded clouds. Later
in the afternoon after 7pm the rain started to come down. Only occasionally
showers but much needed rain by the local farmers who are smiling right now I
am sure. We hope you enjoyed the day. News The arts and crafts fair at Harbour island today was
successful. The usual number of participants took their place among the amount
of offerings in the area of arts and crafts including a table of Bahamian
literature and an interview of the author, George Major by “Bahamas at
Sunrise,” this early morning news team had a wonderful weekend touring
Harbour island and collecting interesting footage for their series of
upcoming shows beginning on ZNS channel 13 at 6:30 am on the 28th
of March. You can view the entire event there on that date. As is usual for the people at Harbour island, many famous
people frequent the island and enjoy the quaint little seaside village with
it upscale approach to Bahamian tourism. Sighted today were the American
commercial painter, Thomas Kinkaid and as well showing themselves in the
community of Harbour Island with his family was Harry Connick Jr. they were
both seen having a great time touring the island via golf cart and stopping
occasionally to check out some of the goods being offered for sale around the
island. Be a star, visit Eleuthera, Bahamas today and enjoy the star
treatment our guests enjoy when they are here. Fishing report Fishing in our
local Tarpum Bay, community went on as usual today and many varieties of fish
products were caught and sold relatively cheaply by local standards. So if your
in the area tomorrow come on down to the local docks here at Tarpum Bay and
get your supplies of fresh seafood products. See you here at Tarpum Bay
tomorrow. More news from Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera, Bahamas tomorrow Back to top of page Back
to home/start page Wednesday, 12 March 2003 Weather A warm, nice day today as the clouds have disappeared as
of yesterday and we have fine weather to talk about once more as our weather
makes the transition from Winter to more summer like weather. The winds are
milder today and the skies are clear and bright with only occasionally
clouded skies. It’s a wonderful day as the temperature today soared up to
about 88 degrees at mid day and will drop down into the low eighties
Fahrenheit tonight. The weather is certainly lovely and comfortable as we
carry on. Enjoy the nice Eleuthera weather today. It’s a great day for the
outdoors and beach activities, especially a nice tan. Enjoy the beach. News Today in the news an apparent problem with gasoline and
natural gas supplies in the city of Nassau as car owners rush to the pumps to
fill up their tanks. Apparently there is a gas supply problem. We do not know
at this time what is causing the supply problem but we surmise that it has to
do with the shortage of oil and gas supplies due to the slowing down of
supplies in Venezuela and other activities related to the upcoming war with
Iraq. By observation gas supplies on Eleuthera are fine for the time being
and we are in no shortage period but will be cautiously monitoring the
situation since what usually effects the rest of the Bahamas effects most of
the major islands like Eleuthera. More on this issue later. We’d like to say hi to Mr. And Mrs. Mary McEwan staying
in Tarpum Bay for the last three months at Carthwrights cottages. They are
having a great time touring and interacting with the natives of the island of
Eleuthera and have thoroughly enjoyed their vacation. Here is a report from
the McEwans: Robert
W. McEwan along with his grandson Andrew McEwan and Ron and Joyce Fishing
Report Fishing has began to slow down since the upcoming closing of the lobster season later at the end of this month and the narrowing supplies of schooling grouper. Fishermen are taking a much needed rest from fishing it seems and less of them are on the seas these days. The weather while calm in the harbors seems less favourable on the high seas. So I would advise that you call before making a vain trip to Tarpum Bay to purchase freshly caught fish supplies daily. In the near future with nice summer weather coming, I’m sure fishing at its usual pace will resume and lots of fresh fish products will again be available for the general fish consuming market. See you at the Tarpum Bay waterfront fish market soon. More news from Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera, Bahamas tomorrow Back to top of page Back to home/start
page Monday, 10 March 2003 Weather The weather today in Eleuthera, Bahamas is warm. The high
today got up to 88 degrees and this evening is around 78 degrees. It is warm
and muggy as the humidity is high. Its wonderful weather for the beach and
the outdoors. Spring breakers to the islands of the Bahamas will love it. So
enjoy the weather in Eleuthera and the Bahamas today. News In news today in The Bahamas the Bahamas government has
announced that the practice by foreign homeowners renting their private homes
will be haulted. The practice is not a legal one as condoned by the
government and people of the Bahamas. The government says that this illegal
practice has been brought to their attention that foreigners are building
houses and residences solely for the purpose of renting and circumventing
government business taxes in so doing. It is advised that if you are coming
to rent in the Bahamas that you do so through a Bahamian owned and operated
property and not a private foreign owned home located in the Bahamas. In the near future the Bahamas government will begin to
investigate this process more thoroughly and as they say,”put and end to the
illegal practice.” So if your renting in the Bahamas, especially Eleuthera
make sure that you are renting from A Bahamian host or rental home owner
rather than a foreign owned home or Condomium as this is illadvised by the
Bahamian authorities. The government of the Bahamas in its policy statement
says in its authority that economic opportunities in tourism and property
rental for the purpose of a vacation in
the Bahamas are the forthright opportunity firstly for the Bahamian
entrepenuer and not the foreigner without the proper applied legal right. The
government of the Bahamas contends that literally millions of tax dollars and
the proper liscensing fees are lost annually due to this very illegal
process. It is not known at this time
what the penalty is for this practice but more will come in on this issue in
the near future we are sure. The weekend in Eleuthera was a delightful one this time
around. On Friday night we met a host of friends at the fish fry in Governors
Harbor and on Saturday night the Galaxy Sports bar and the Shines
restaurants, both in Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera had live bands playing music. It
was truly a grand time and will continue each weekend until the tradition
dies and another takes it place. Tarpum Bay is a nice place to spend a
Saturday night since there are so many clubs where people are hanging out and
having a good time. If a good time is what your looking for, island style,
checkout Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera on the weekend. Your sure to find something
exciting going on or its just a great place to hang out and have a quiet
evening on the waterfront. Its summer now in Eleuthera and that will mean more and
more outdoor activities for all to enjoy so enjoy the summer season in
Eleuthera. CJ and Kristel flew in from Florida this weekend to
deliver a donated load of computers and equipment donated to the North
Eleuthera and the harbor Island libraries and computer center. We thank them
for their most generous and valiant efforts to bring Eleuthera into the first
world by contributing to the education of the students and adults who will be
using this computer equipment in the libraries and Computer centers of North
Eleuthera. We look forward to seeing them again in July when CJ promises to bring
down his boat to Governors harbor for a party week around the US independence
day holiday week. Here in Eleuthera we’re always looking to meet new people
and enjoy our time with them having a good time and sharing the good will and
hospitality of the island as we are known for and carry on with great
tradition. See you at Fish Fry again in July CJ and Kristel. Fish fry at
Governors Harbor is a weekly Friday night event. There is also a Friday night
fish fry weekly in Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera. Fishing Report Fishing continues daily at the water front fish market in
Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera so come on down daily in the late afternoon to purchase
your supplies of fresh fish products from the guys at the docks. It’s a fun
time to meet people and to learn about the fishing industry from the guys who
do it daily first hand. If your looking to organize a day of fishing with a
reputable, fun fishing host arranging with one of the guys at the docks is a
good way to meet the characters first hand daily at the water front right
here in Tarpum Bay. There are many of them seeking the opportunity to further
share the good will and joy of the island culture with you during a great,
fun day of fishing. So have fun, come down and see the sights daily at Tarpum
Bay docks. More news from Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera, Bahamas tomorrow Back to top of page Back

today got up to 85 degrees with a slight 10knot breeze over the land scape
and very little chance of rain. The skies were clear and bright with little
cloud cover. Another delightful day in the island of Eleuthera. Enjoy the great
weather we are having. It’s a great day for the beach. Its wonderful weather. News Today in the news a local high school student has a
fractured arm as a result of a beating at the local highschool in Rock Sound,
Eleuthera. Young Walter was disciplined by his highschool teacher and she
went a bit too far in disciplining the young lad. No legal action has been
taken at this point. In other news a 59 year old woman is missing from the Rock
Sound Community. The elderly lady has been missing for more than eight days
now and the worst is feared in this situation. The lady has a history of
senility and mental illness recently and is expected to be hiding out in the
bushes like she did some times before. Since a few relatives died the woman
has been acting strange. We hope this lady will be found soon and that all
will be OK. Another unfortunate, infrequent, drama in the history and
life on the island of Eleuthera. Fishing report The summer fishing season is fastly approaching and more
and more people who love fishing are making plans to come down to the island
and fish. Here are a few species of the fish available during the summer
fishing season, fish the blue
water for dolphin, tuna, kingfish, wahoo etc. its all there and available for
the taking. So make your plans to come down to Eleuthera for an excellent
summer season of fun fishing for bonefish in the shallow flats for free and
many other varieties and fishing packages available. Fishing in Eleuthera is fun. More news from Tarpumbay, Eleuthera, Bahamas tomorrow Back to top of page

page Tuesday, 04 March 2003 Weather Another day of excellent warm weather in Eleuthera. This
is the typical weather Eleuthera experiences year round, usually. The
temperature got up to a warm 87 degrees farenheit with little breeze blowing
in from the sea and no chance of rain today. Its hot, warm, muggy and we love
it. It seems like its going to be a warm summer this year. Enjoy the
Eleuthera weather. News The Galaxy restaurant and bar is open again. They opened
officially on Thursday night to a crowd of Eleutherians looking for a good
time. Friday night saw a live band from Waterford and lots of fresh cold
drinks. Its gonna be a great time in Tarpum Bay now that the Galaxy sports
bar and resturant are open once again. In addition, Shines seafood bar and grill is open as well
on the waterfront in Tarpum Bay. It seems now that we have lots of night
spots to go to these days. Lets see, theres Erics snack foods and bar on east
front street, then there shines seafood just south of that, and too theres
Quincy’s conch salad stand open all night till the customers last and then in
the western district theres Jan’s bar and on the top of the hill theres
Galaxy restaurant and bar so the rounds can be made checking out each one at
night or during the day for that matter. What matters is that you spend some
money and have some fun in the main time. So see you all there having fun club hopping in Tarpum
Bay. Fishing report Conchs are making a come back. The guys are diving lots
of conchs now a days and many can be bought among other fresh, caught daily
seafood products at the fish market at the waterfront in Tarpum Bay,
