A new fishing pavilion will be built in the same place of the old fish market here in Tarpum bay. The local government has proposed that in order to enhance the fish market and beautify the area as well as make it ecologically safe they will construct a new all inclusive fish market for the benefit of the fishermen and the village of Tarpum Bay. There are no concrete plans yet on when exactly this will take place but plans are on the drawing board to make this happen. There will be no interruption of the local daily fish market so if your on Eleuthera and wish to purchase fish products make your way to Tarpum Bay, Bay front dock and purchase your quantities of fish products. Anything from grouper to sea crab and lobster will be on sale daily after 3pm.

Weather

Gorgeous weather today and for the past few days. Temperature into the mid 80’s, sunny bright and  some breeze pouring over the landscape. No rain, a beautiful time for outdoor activities.

News

Joy and Adrian Johnson of Tarpum bay celebrated their third marraige anniversary with a splendid party this evening. Friends, family and well wishers gathered for a splendid barbecue party and had an excellent time dancing, drinking and having a great time together.

Friday October 25th was the date during which an evening meeting was held at the  Tarpum Bay, public school house. The subject of the meeting was health and the environment. Environmental officials from the ministry of health were in attendance to the meeting and their purpose was to inform the local inhabitants of Tarpum Bay of some of the dangers which presently exist at the daily fish market and the waters surrounding the docks in Tarpum Bay. A local ordanance was passed which said that anyone found dumping in the waters surrounding the local docks will be fined a sum of not less than $1,000.00 and up to $5,000.00 for repeated offenses of dumping in the waters surrounding the local docks. The problem is that too often fishermen through the refuse of the fish and the guts of the fish directly into the waters surrounding the local docks. The danger of this is that bacteria from the rotting fish refuse grows a bacteria that kills all surrounding vegetation at the local docks and there is a visible bacteria which goes unnoticed by the local fisherman and that area is indeed a dead zone and an unsightly waste area which might turn off some tourists and customers to the local market because of its smell. So much fish is caught and cleaned in these areas that unlike the past the bacteria kills the small growing fish and as such interrupts the food chain and the spawning of certain types of local fish from taking their rightful place in the entire national scheme of fish breeding.

This practice of dumping refuse of fish guts at the daily fish market has been discontinued. After a major outbreak of fish poisoning in Nassau some years ago the problem was found to be the dumping of fish refuse after cleaning. Since this is a major problem now in the out island the local Health authorities along with the commissioner and other environmental authorities are taking the steps needed to discontinue this effect on the important fish population of this island of Eleuthera and the entire Bahamas.

Fishing report

During the environmental health meeting at the local school in Tarpum Bay the fishermen of Tarpum Bay and the island of Eleuthera were promised that a new fish market will be gbuilt to accomadate the needs of the local fishermen. The authorities realize the need for the local fish market to supply their line of fish products for both local inhabitants and tourists  who frequent the local fish market. The authorities want to make sure that the local fish market are equipped with the latest and the best cleaning methods of prepare their fish products for the local market in a clean and suitable condition. The must be ready for the challenges of the future and know that they must take a direct part in preserving the environment for the consumers and the generations to follow them in the tradition of holding a daily fish market in the village of Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera and the entire Bahamas. To this end all of the training and the laws are in place to preserve a fishing industry for those who will follow us in the future.

Weather

Absolutely beautiful weather here in Eleuthera today. Partially overcast skies with a slight chance of rain. Cool temperate weather in the mid eighties today. Bright and sunny all day. A great day for the outdoors this weekend. Enjoy the weather, enjoy your time in Eleuthera.

News

Several local Eleuthera boys poisioned after eating barracuda fish. The boys, middle age men, had to be flown off of the island into a Nassau hospital for treatment. In the Bahamas the great taste of the barracuda fish makes it a tempting taste for many fish eaters on the island. Anyone here will tell you that there is nothing more tasty than a slice of dry deep fried barracuda fish, especially if it is fresh or just caught. Barracuda despite the fact that it is poisonous makes it a favorite fish for many islanders. Many are poisoned, less than fatally, by the locally caught fish. What makes it more attractive is that there is no cost for the fish. Fishermen who catch barracuda will clean it and share it with the members of the community who eat the sometimes poisoned fish. Not many of the local variety of fish are poisoned some say that there is only a problem with the barracuda if it has had a steady diet of metal in its diet.

Keep in mind that the Governors Harbor home coming event is coming up very soon,  so lets meet in Governors Harbor and have a great time having fun with our community.

Fishing

Fishermen are catching record numbers of grouper here in Tarpum Bay since the weather has changed here on the island. Taking advantage of the good friendly seas the men set out and spend the entire day diving for the great fish. In addition volumes of lobster are being caught for the consumption of the great tasting fish. At the fish market in Tarpum Bay daily there is a wide variety of fish products available for the market. Everything from sea crab to fresh frying pan fish are available along with the variety of  fish which are shared for free among the community. Fish like the Tarpon fish, the barracude, the shark are steaked up after being cleaned for the taking for free by the local market here in Tarpum Bay. Also after large groupers are filleted the head and the bones are available for free to anyone who would take that portion of the fish. Otherwise its thrown over board to feed the shark population at night around the cleaning areas around the dock.

Weather

The weather is great today. We have a 30% chance of rain. Clear blue skies with little rain and come breeze over the community. The temperature has been in the mid eighties dropping to 75 degrees farenheit at night. Cool nights and warm days are what we have been having. Great days for the beach and other outdoor activities.

News

Many seasonal guests who spend the wartm winters on the island of Eleuthera are back in town. All around we can see the faces of these new winter natives who come down to enjoy our warm climate for the winter. We appreciate and welcome these people and wish that they would stay longer and share this tropical paradise with us.

Business activity and the economy have been too quiet in Eleuthera to solicit any comment over the last few days. Economically things are going a bit dismal and counter to the intentions of the new PLP government who promised Eleutherians that after 90 days they would have the economy of Eleuthera lifted out of the thirty year decline the local economy has suffered under now three separate administrations. Many wonder now is there is any end in sight for the faltering Eleuthera economy? The answer is a resounding thud, who knows? Appearantly not the politicians.

Eleutherians are poised for the few holidays as we head swiftly towards the end of the new year.

Fishing

The fish after whom the settlement of Tarpum Bay got its name is surfacing again in our local waters. The Tarpon fish was caught Monday afternoon by a local fisherman. Over the last few years the fish has been thought to be extinct since our forefathers relied on the fish heavily in days gone by and probably depleted the stock. From time to time now some one catches a few of the large tasty fish and shares it among the members of the community who frequent the dock and the daily fish market. What a treat a steak of Tarpon fish is. Come and get your fish products from the local fish market in Tarpum Bay today since fishermen have resumed the fishing trade after the dissipation of the traveling hurricane.

Weather

The weather today in Eleuthera is clear and mild. Tropical depression #14 dissipated over Cuba and since then all we have had in Eleuthera is mild weather. The sky today is partially cloudy with a 30% chance of rain. The temperature is a low 85 degrees farenheit. The winds are extremely calm.

News

Today on the island of Eleuthera is a calm day. There is not much activity other than a Softball game at Rock Sound, Eleuthera. The Eleuthera Softball league has a mens and womens team from just about every settlement and they play on the weekends against each other for some sports activity.

Kenneth Culmer was installed as right worshipal master into his Eleuthera. The lodge, a Scottish based lodge called the Eleutherian Adventurers had a banquet at workers house in governors harbor Saturday night at eight PM. Many of the local inhabitants of the island were invited to the grand ballroom style, dressup affair.

Weather

Today the weather is overcast in Eleuthera. There is occasional rain and the temperature is around 85 degrees farenheit. The Tropical depression #14 is churning off of the coast of Cuba. Tarpum Bay experienced what might be a tornado during the night last night. Showers and thunder storms expected during the night. Winds tomorrow are expected to reach 20 mph or slightly above.

News

With the unofficial opening of the winter season tourists and mostly homeowners are returning to the island of Eleuthera for this year. These visitors are quite welcomed into our area. They are the life blood of the economic community at the moment. Other than the few homeowners residing seasonally on the island of Eleuthera there is no economic activity. Many natives are wondering what happened to the government of the Bahamas who promised the immediate creation of jobs during their colorful election campaign. Eleutherians are astonished to find out that nothing is happening as a result of government intervention and impetus. Life goes on with hopes of a bright future and the revival of the Eleutherian economy in the future. However, during that time, how will Eleutherians survive?

Fishing report

Fishing is again suspended due to the unseasonal weather caused by tropical depression #14. Fishing and the daily fish market will resume when the weather and seas have returned to normal.

Weather

The hurricane depression, unnamed but called depression #14 is threatening the central and Northern Bahamas. Skies are overcast and the general population are preparing for the possible visitation of the storm tomorrow evening or Friday morning. The temperature is a high 89 degrees farenheit and there is a 80percent chance of rain. Weather forcast predict that we will receive a large amount of rain out of the tropical storm.

News

Tuesday was a wonderful day in Eleuthera. The weather was relative cool due to the overcastting accompanying the coming hurricane.

There are two significant events worth mentioning about Tuesday in Eleuthera. The first is the coming of the weekly mailboat which brings in all of our consumer goods from Nassau and the weekly mail from the post office in Nassau. The second is the Haynes Library which hosts their weekly library group at the library. The library event takes place every Tuesday in the summer and twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday during the winter season. The group meeting occurs on both days at 10:30am.

The main activity at the library is the meeting of our local Bahamian/Eleutherian group of people who get together to support the visitation of the library. The group also hosts the birthday parties of all its members who each bring a covered dish from home for serving at the birthday parties of  its members. It’s a wonderful event to become involved in and a fantastic way to spend the morning on Tuesdays and Thursdays for those of us who have the time on hand to do so. Even stopping by for a few minutes to meet the library group is a good idea. So plan to stop by and have a cup of coffee or tea on a Tuesday or Thursday morning when the library group is active or have that coffee or tea anyday of the week for that matter.

In addition the library host a computer center which is available for the general public to use at their opportunity. There is a small toll charge involved for the service which goes toward the upkeep of the library and its staff. So if your on Eleuthera and wish to periodically surf the internet or answer your email do stop by the Haynes library and use their internet service which is available for your convenience. This computer/internet service is a great deal for our tourists, our natives and visitors to our lovely Eleuthera island.

Fishing

Presently fishing is suspended for the few days our island will be effected by the passing hurricane. The daily fish market will resume as soon as the seas settle back to normal after the passing of the hurricane.

Weather

Today is another gorgeous Bahamian day. The sun is shining, there is a 40% chance of rain. The clouds are clear except for a few scattered clouds. The temperaturea is now around 85 degrees and climbing to 91 degrees farenheit. The humidity is high. Its another great day for the beach or outside.

News

Today is the last day of the four day National Heroes day in the Bahamas. The holiday was celebrated for the first time this year from October 10 to the 14th. Heroes day replaces the Discovery day during which time Colombus was celebrated as the man who through discovering the Bahamian island of San Salvador, discovered the new world. Bahamians are disillusioned with Colombus now adays many are no longer happy to credit the long gone navigator of the uncharted seas of the Caribbean and Atlantic oceans and so much more. Columbus is reffered to by many modern men as an imposter for not having given official credit to the native inhabitants of the islands of the Bahamas, enslaving them for their labor at that time to exploit the Cuban gold mines. Generally there is lots of controversy over giving Columbus his historic place in the new world. There is much global debate on the subject and modern scholars are quick to recognize the plight and existence of the native tribes much like the American Indian is credited as being the first modern species or settlers of the American homeland. In the Bahamas presently there is much debate.

A colleague and friend of mine is currently writing a collective history of the Eleuthera island history. That book should hit the shelves in a few months time giving new credit to the native tribes of the Bahamas the interest needed to elevate them to the ranks of men like Columbus and other European discoverers.

Well after much celebration during the four day weekend people are returning home today. Whymms Bight in Southern Eleuthera and the all engrossing Harbor island homecoming were held this weekend with an enormous amount of support and turnout among the native population of the Bahamas. Lots of foreign well wishers and tourists also visited Harbor island. Harbor Island is fastly becoming the most popular destination for tourist visitors in the Caribbean either because of its proximity and natural appearance or because of its genteel, personable people. Time will tell how well the island collectively is enhanced and grows with its rich history.

Fishing report

Fishermen continue to make great catches of fish products here in the local daily fish market at Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera. However nationally there is a worrisome debate about the catching of the Nassau Grouper and the queen conch which is a staple on the Bahamian table. Government, guided by a local environmental group headed by Sir Nicholas Nuttle has come up with a time table during the mating season of the Nassau Grouper during which time there will be no catching of the Nassau grouper which upon the advise of the environmental group and other oceanic scholars suggest that if great care is not given to the plight of the Nassau grouper we could loose its existence forever. So a date has been set from the 1st of November to the 1st of February during which no catching of the Nassau grouper will be caught. This period will give the grouper a chance to breed, school and revive their numbers for the five years the ban will be effective here in the Bahamas. The Bahamas is said to be the last outpost for the presevation of the Nassau grouper.

When these rules come into effect later this year the local fishermen will have to observe these rules however damaging they might be to their own economic or income plight. Certainly most fishermen will have to find other work for that time period or be imprisoned for breaking the rules of engagement on the Nassau grouper and the queen conch in the Bahamas.

Weather

Ocassional scattered rain. Partially overcast skies. A 66% chance of rain. The temperature is in the upper eighties. There is a slight breeze cooling off shaded spaces around the island.

News

Our party last night at Chris’s house in Rain Bow bay went well last night with some guests staying over for an overnight nap.

This weekend all roads point to Harbor Island for the five day event. They will be having a regatta which will showcase the sailing skills of our Bahamian boat builders. It’ll be a lot of fun. If your going look our for wall to wall people as they celebrate and dance to dj music in the streets for a non stop party for the several days of the event. Lots of things to eat and drink will be on hand and offered for sale.

Whymms Bight will also be having their homecoming event this weekend along with Harbor Island. So the island is in for some periods of fun for a while when island put their worries and fears behind them and enjoy the holiday weekend.

The holiday which was called Columbus discovery day is renamed by the government  and is now called Heroes day which will honor our local Bahamian heroes. Men like Sir Milo Butler, Past prime minister Lynden Oscar Pindling among others bestowed with the honor of being called a Bahamian hero. This year will be the initial commemoration of Hero’s day.

Fishing report

After a few days of waiting for the outcome of the traveling storm Kyle local fishermen are back out to sea and bringing in their healthy catches of fish products. Get you supply of lobster, grouper and crab at the local fish market.

The government of the Bahamas will be imposing an upcoming closing of the grouper and conch fishing for a seasonal period of some three months. Many are wondering how well the embargo of fishing will affect the local fishing economy. Fishermen may be cast out of the business for a period of time while the grouper and conch colonies regather and breed to maintain their current losing numbers.

News

Guess who’s back in Tarpum Bay? John and Katie Jones are here along with our friend Mike. They arrived on Tuesday evening  and are spending the winter with us this year. We appreciate their presence in the community.

October 12th is coming. The time of year when  Harbor Island and Governors harbor have their homecoming. Its going to be a hot one this year. Lots of people are coming down for the holidays from the states. All of our friends from Florida will be in town and Eleuthera will be booming like mad for a few days.

The Sanford Florida heritage festival took place in Sanford Florida last week and the event was a great success for both Eleuthera, its sister city and the city of Sanford Florida. See www.eleu.net for a full report of the festival from our friend Kristel who attended the event and had a real great time.

Also Rose Culmer married Sammy from Freeport last weekend as well. Our friend Sharon From Florida attended the wedding and had a wonderful weekend sharing with us here.

Weather

We had great weather in Eleuthera over the weekend. Clear skies and warm temperatures with the occasional scattered rain. It was a great time for Eleutherians and visitors to spend the days outdoors and at the beach.

News

Mr. Roy Cates of Rock Sound, Eleuthera died yesterday of terminal cancer. He will be missed by his family and in this community. Also in other news The Courage Band has been invited to play the African-Caribbean Jazz Festival on November 9! Hopefully a contigent of Eleutherians will accompany them on the trip.

Fishing Report

The harbor at Tarpum Bay is being dredged out in order for the locak fishermen to lauch and take up their boats in low tide. In the past this has been a problem when they want to take out their boats during the running of a hurricane or other unseasonal weather. Now they will be able to manage their boats at will and whenever they wish to.

Weather

The weather is great today. Sunn skies over all clear skies. There is a 30% chance of rain today. It’s a wonderful day for the outdoors and some beach fun. The temperature is a warm 91 degrees farenheit.

News

In tarpumbay today Rose Culmer married Sammy. Sammy is a resident of Freeport Bahamas and the two wedded at the local Methodist church amidst a large number of well wishers and people looking on and attending the event. Guess who made it home for the wedding? Our great friend Sharon flew in from Florida especially to attend the wedding ceremony along with a host of family and friends. The reception will be held in Ingrahams Beach Inn where the wedding well wishers will gather for food and drinks in a formal sit down ceremony. Mr. Breon Leary is the Moderator. He brings with him his brand of humor and story telling. He is a frequent and locally famous joke teller and is known for his level of optimism and humor.

Fishing Report.

Today is the first good day fishermen have been able to go out to sea and catch fish. The traveling of several hurricanes in the area spawned a four day spell of rain and rough seas. While this weather occurs the local fishermen find something else to do and ride out the weather safely on land. Fish products, especially the fresh just from the sea variety are scarce until the weather fully settles down.

Weather

Overcast and rainy this afternoon in Eleuthera. The skies are overcast with continual occasional rain. Today is not a good beach day the temperature is a cool 89 degrees farenheit.

News

Around town today there is talk of several hotel properties being sold in Eleuthera. We agree that some negotiating has been going on but the only property now doing actual construction and preparations is Jacks Bay in Cotton Bay. The heavy equipment is at the location and they are  working on the project. A quick review of the HG Christie realestate company will show you that there are about seven upscale Eleuthera properties being sold and they are still on the blocks being sold. They haven’t been pulled from the circulating for sale web pages yet. So none of the rumors about Winding Bay and Cotton Bay Eleuthera being sold is true. This was variefied by the Member of Parliament last week in a political party meeting here in Tarpum Bay.

Fishing report

Fishing continues on. The weather has been good enough for the fishermen to go out and catch fish and they have. One thing noticeable is that the tourists want the best value for money when it comes to fish and while that may mean buying smaller tasty fry fish for the natives it means the lobster and the grouper filet for the tourist. Don’t they realize how much money they can save by just buying and trying the type of fish locals buy? Its ok with us but with the buck being so tight these days. Everyone needs to be cautious about how much he or she spends. Just this tip.

Weather

Clear skies with occasional scattered clouds. The morning is a cool 88degrees Farenheit. The temperture will climb up steadily as the sun rises in the noonday sky. Its an excellent day for the beach. The chances of rain is only 30%. Its gonna be a great day.

News

Yesterday morning in the community of South Eleuthera there was a delegation of government vehicles and people in the area conducting an official government survey. The Chairman of the South Eleuthera PLP party was a member of the group. Along with the group as well was the Speaker of the House of Assembly and the South Eleuthera Member of parliament. No one knows the purpose of the visitation but never the less they were here. They surveyed and stopped at the local administration building in Our village of Tarpum bay under heavy police protection.

Fishing report

While fresh fish is a wonderful gift given to us by the seas the saying warns to mind the price of the fish. Because fishermen have to go such great distances for fish products the local prices are climbing. Local people will soon find it too expensive to purchase fish locally. A conch is now two dollars each, that’s quite high. Lobster is more than eight dollars a pound. Grouper is over three dollars a pound for filet. So mind the price of the fish at the daily fish market.

Weather

Todays weather has been fabulous. Another in a series of great days for the island in the end of summer. The skies are clear with only occasional cloudidness. The chance of rain today is around 40%.

The sun is out and quite warm at 91degrees farenheit. It’s a fabulous day for outdoors today. Beaching would be especially nice this time of year.

News

Eleuthera is a place filled with much beauty, the vast Caribbean sea, our natural beauty and beautiful artichetecture. Today was a wonderful day especially for me. I took a long scenic drive from Tarpum Bay over seventy miles up the shoreline drive to Spanish Wells. Promoting the book,”Romance, Kalik and Conch Salad obviously. Our inhabitants appear to be as excited about the book as I am and hopefully the experience of the book will be enjoyed and shared by many well wishers. Almost anything that celebrates love togetherness and Romance I think is a good thing nowadays. Things seem to go to the contrary so much in the media these days. People blowing up each other for nothing with bombs and suicides. Come to Eleuthera for the opposite of that, Romance, Love, togetherness and commuion with the Caribbean sea and nature. Its here to be enjoyed and theres lots of beautiful beaches and acreage here to explore and enjoy it doing just that. Love and happiness. No wonder Eleutherians are so happy despite their plight. The relationships, the friendships and the love must go on. Perhaps we can be notorious for that matter. That’s a lot of love for the world. Hope you like sweet syrupy things, I do..bye..Hooray for love, hooray for Eleuthera and its indigenous people.

In other news the schools are now open for the fall term. Children are back under the auspicies of their teachers for the day and parents are rejoicing to have so much free time on their hands again. One store keeper told me the other day that the children are spending more and more money at her store which is located near the school zone. What can this mean? Maybe things aren’t that bad after all. Some people still have reserves of money. That was a positive note from a caring businesswoman. We’ll be on the look out for more tips like that.

Fishing Report

The fisherman are waiting on a meeting to be held between themselves and the local community local government board here in Tarpum Bay. There are some issues pertaining to the cleanliness of the place and the very important issue of space, new space and the need for additional health related concerns. Etc. One of the local fishermen said to me that he will hold off on being interviewed so that he can share with us the good news after he is interviewed. The daily catching and sales of fish goes on everyday now at the fish market at Tarpum Bay. Come and get your supplies of Grouper, crab, frying fish and lobster in the after noons after three PM. There is lots of fish to be had here.

In other fishing news the fishing vessels in Spanish wells are in with another load of crawfish gotten from their illustrious fishing traps set all around the islands of the Bahamas. The boat today off loaded more than ten thousand pounds of frozen, bagged lobster tails at the dock in Spanish wells. Some of the local house wives in conversation were praising their,”Men” for going away on their lonely hiwater seaway adventures for weeks at a time. They weren’t necessarily complaining just sharing some of the good news of the lobster season with a fair weather friend of the day. We’ll give you more from the fishing season in Spanish Wells later from tarpumbaytoday.

Weather

Todays weather is rainy again. The skies are presently clearing for the afternoon after a morning of heavy rain. The temperature is a cool upper eighties. This afternoon there is a fifty percent chance of rain. Sunny skies are just beginning for the day.

News

We went crabbing today. We woke up early in the morning before six AM and set out for the crabbing grounds some forty miles away.

For those of you unfamiliar with crabbing it is a harvesting of the land crab variety which lives in the forests of the Bahamas. The crab with its exoskeleton is a delicacy in the Bahamas and is an important part of the protein diet of the islands of the Bahamas. We rose early at 5am and made our way to the lighthouse in Bannerman town an area uninhabited and filled with the rocky forests necessary to catch a maximum amount of Crabs. The crab is a tasty species with a particular flavor similar to lobster. In fact they taste about the same. The crab, because of over gathering may be becoming extinct on the island since we have to work harder and go further and further in the bushes to harvest them. They have a behaviour pattern of behaviour by which we understand when the time is right for harvesting. This month will mark the unofficial closing of the crabbing season especially since they are spawning around this time, taking their eggs to the water, either rain water or the salt water to wash and hatch their eggs. These eggs will hatch and replenish the crab stock in the wilds of the forest.

The early morning time just before the dawn is the best time to search for  this delicious species. Crab and rice cooked from this crab is a most delicious part of the Bahamian diet.  Not to be confused with the blue fin or sea/snow crab, the land crabs found here in the Bahamas are especially a treat in the metropolitan city of Nassau where the out island and the indigineous portion of people there enjoy buying and cooking them.

Crabbing is an activity only in the out islands since their harvesting must be manages and good health habits practiced in the areas where they are naturally harvested by hands. This catching by hand demands an understanding of the crab and one must be skillful to some degree in order to hold the crab. Crabs can bite and cause a large amount of discomfort like the Maine lobster with its claws.

Fishing Report

There will be no fresh fish at the fish market today due to the weather and rain. The seas are stormy. They may be suitable for fishing tomorrow.

Weather

Rainy weather this morning. Totally overcast skies with lots of thunder showers expected to last the entire day here in Eleuthera. The rain has finally come, in good time for our farmers. The winds are calm. The temperature is a cool mid eighties. School and other outdoor types of work will be cancelled on a day like today. We’ll have to see what tomorrow will bring.

News

What a wonderful time to be had in Eleuthera on the weekend, at least on the southern end of the island. On Friday night there was a beach party and fish fry in governors Harbor. On Saturday there was the party at the Venta Club in Winding bay, a fish Fry in Tarpum Bay and a fish Fry in Savannah Sound. Our friends from America were here this weekend and almost kept up with all the affairs. We had a wonderful time sharing what little time we did share with them at the fish fry and on the Beaches at night. Bonfires, wine and great friends are so much fun. We look forward to these times in the future.

Fishing Report

If the fishermen left the village earlier than the rain this morning there will be fresh fish for sale at the fish market this weekend. If they were caught by the rain preparing to go there will be no fish this afternoon. It is quite dangerous fishing in the lightning and other rainy elements. Unfortunately the man we had scheduled for a profile today did not agree to t he interview. Some fear of the internet he said. We’ll try again with someone more conducive to our intentions here.

Weather

No rain in sight today. Over all it was a comfortable warm day with temperatures in the upper eighties with scattered clouds and a thirty percent chance of rain. Another fabulous day for having fun at the beach or wherever you’re fun spot is. There was however not much of the characteristic cool breeze flowing over the island.

News

This evening the local government board of Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera will receive their annual operating budget from the Commisioner of the South Eleuthera area. This reported from a committee member of the local government board. This budget has been set at a level so as to support the daily functioning and necessary repair and decorative work to be done for an entire year for the settlement of Tarpum Bay. Appearantly the central council of the South Eleuthera district prepares the budget for each area in the district based on past performances and budgets. Many on the local government board complain that the budgets are too small to effect the type of supports and changes expected by the residents of the small towns. There is much to do but little money to do it with says many of the local government board members. As confirmed by one of the accountants of the national Local government committee in Nassau there are no additional funds to go around in order to raise the budgets of the various small town local government boards throughtout the country. Local government boards in a three day work shop during January 2002 were asked by the national government to be creative in coming up with ways to raise local funds locally. This brought about angry, disappointed remarks by the body of local government members from all of the local settlements who know that all areas on Eleuthara are economically challenged as it is and here being told to come up on their own with additional funds needed by the local government boards. Many members left the conference in dismay over those factors and wondered, where to from here?

Fishing Report

There are many faces and people clammering for the best market prices daily at the fish market. This brings about much of the noise and disorder at the fish market. There are many characters here at the fish market. I’d like to introduce you to some of those guys day by day and enlighten you with their fishing affairs and qualifications so each day we’ll be talking to some of our local fishermen and reporting to you daily about them, their business and aims for the future of the Tarpum Bay, fish market. So look for Fishermen profiles from www.tarpumbay.com in the future.

Weather

Todays weather here in Eleuthera is calm. There are no signs of Edward here. The skies are bright blue with occasional scattered clouds. There is a thirty to forty percent chance of rain today. The glorious sunny summer continues with the temperature today getting up into the mid to low nineties.

News

To the north of the Central Bahamas the tropical storm Eduard is churning and threatening the Eastern Florida coast. This activity will do two things today if nothing else. It will stop the flights of tourists into the Bahamas and discontinue the flight into Florida for the Bahamas. Either way our economy looses today and probably through Friday because of the formation of the storm. However there is nothing else for us to do but thank God that we were speared the wrath and move on.

Otherwise in Eleuthera those who can work are working and all else is quiet.

Fishing Report

The fishermen have taken to the calm Eleuthera seas today for another chance to catch that greatest elusive catch and set the market afire with news of their bravery in catching the biggest fish. As an aside the local fishermen compete with each other and watch the catch of each other in some sort of local competition for the reputation of being known as the best diver on the docks. That is one of the ways they relax and have some fun after being out in the dangerous waters of the Caribbean.

Weather

Another wonderful day of weather for the lovely island of Eleuthera. The sun is out and the temperature is around ninety degrees farenheit. The sky is sunny with occasional cloudy, scattered skies. It’s a wonderful warm day for the beach. There is a slight breeze across the landscape today.

News

In Eleuthera today the mood overall is quiet. Those who have jobs have attended them. School has just opened since yesterday and children are back in school for the entire day.

Otherwise the inhabitants of Eleuthera are complaining about the job situation since there are no jobs available for the inhabitants. Some blame the government saying that they were promised the speedy creation of jobs. This has not taken place after the new government has been elected. Many are feeling the disappointment.

There is lots of entertainment on the island these days. On the weekends beginning on Friday nights the weekly and original Friday night fish fry is held in Governors Harbor at Anchor bay. Then on Saturday night Savannah Sound has reopened their fish fry for patrons who love good food music and drinks until the wee, wee hours of the morning.

Fishing Report

There is much fishing now adays going on on the island since the weather has settled and fishermen are able to get to the fishing grounds far beyond the island. However many say that the supply of fish and conchs especially is becoming noticeable at the fish markets daily. There are shortages since the fishermen say they have to go further and deeper for the conchs. There is much concern by government which has reported via the media that they are considering placing seasonal restraints on certain fish species like the grouper and the conch especially. They must do this to replenish stock of the precious necessary resource.

Weather

Today is another beautiful day in the Bahamas. The temperature is in the upper eighties. We’re under sunny skies with occasional scattered clouds. It is a wonderful day for the beaches today.

News

It is rumored in Eleuthera today that a government friendly corporation will be taking over the government highschool transportation contract from the former government friendly group effective immediately. The group will order new busses for the transportation contract. For the time being the old contractors will fulfill their contracts until further notice from the present PLP central government.

In addition there will be a new PLP government administrator placed in the governments road traffic department on Eleuthera. This new administrator will come from the road traffic department in Nassau, Bahamas.

It would seem that the last government revenue generating venues on Eleuthera will be garnered by the present PLP government solely for the economic benefit of their supporters. The record will show that this wasnot done by the former FNM administration. Where to from here? These moves by the present PLP government are certainly victimization at least if carried out by the government.

In the private sector as well it is rumored that Windermere Highschool has been reverted back into the hands of the local settlement of Savannah Sound where a local head mistress has been put in place as head mistress of the prominent boarding highschool. The school was allowed to operate under the guidance and leadership of the former Gospel Missionary Union headquartered in the Mid west United states for the past thirty years. The GMU appearantly has been given a pivotal role still in the running of the highschool.

Also as reported by the first lady of Eleuthera the speaker of the house of assembly and his wife will be embarking on a two week trip to Africa. The couple will be a part of a fact finding group from the PLP government of the Bahamas on a fact finiding mission to the mother continent. Africa is a well renoun subject in the existence of the Bahamas and is highly regarded as the birth place and origin of our culture and our people. Junkanoo, our music and our local dialect being the most appearant of these ancestoral ties.

Fishing Report

Fishermen have embarked for the past few weeks on a renewed energy of getting back on course after a few spells of bad weather. Fishermen have been getting back to the business of daily fishing and the daily fish market has seen a renewed revival of products as a result. You can now purchase your daily supply of fish products at the local ish market in Tarpum Bay Once again.
