January 2003 Weather Another cool
gorgeous day in Eleuthera today. The temperature was around 75degrees
farenheit with a 5 knot breeze across the landscape. The sun was out and
shining. There was a low chance of rain today. It was a great day for the
outdoors and a great day for a cool tan. News Eleuthera may
soon have a new hotel. Official sources tell us that the Jacks Bay project is
ongoing. The company developing the project just spent another $89,000.00 for
an aerial survey of the property to a US firm. Sources say this is the second
major contract of its kind for the project and as the source said,”If they
are spending this kind of money still on the project they must mean business.”
So we in Eleuthera look forward to seeing the continued development of the
new site and await the hope of new jobs and new people in the south Eleuthera
area. Watch for an
update of our annual Eleuthera homecoming and holiday events schedule coming
to this website in the near future. Fishing Report Fishing
continues in Eleuthera as the weather is beginning to warm allowing the
fishermen back into the frigid waters surrounding the island of Eleuthera. Come
to Tarpum Bay daily for the fish
market where you can purchase your quantity of fresh fish products. More news from

January 2003 Weather Today our
weather in Eleuthera seems to be promising us another nice sunny day with
some occasional coludidness and a chance of rain. The sun is out. The skies
are partially overcast in the east and there is about a 40% chance of rain
today. Otherwise its
going to be a great day for the outdoors and a wonderful time for the beach. News Two birthdays
of significant notice on Eleuthera this weekend. Both celebrated at church
and had parties and both are long term members of the Eleuthera community.
Mrs. Agnes Young turned 90 this Tuesday and Mrs. Emma Cooper turned eighty
this past week. Both celebrated in grand style and thanked God and man for
their long years on our lovely planet. A car accident
in Tarpum Bay left one man from the island of Eleuthera with minor damages.
The man hit a lamp pole just inside the settlement near Ann and Toni’s house
while passing through the settlement on Sunday Afternoon. Baymen came to the
mans rescue and took him to the local clinic where he was treated and
released with only a few superficial wounds. Fishing Report Today the
warmer weather and calm seas are the ideal situation for the fishermen to
harvest their fresh sea food from the still cold waters around the island.
The Nassau grouper has completed its annual schooling and spawning activity
now so it appears that there are no longer the quantities of the grouper fish
available as they were a few weeks ago for the slaughter. They may be no
longer available by the truck load but still available in smaller groups and
schools. So come on down to Tarpum Bay this afternoon to purchase your
quantities of fresh fish and other seafood. More news from

January 2003 Weather Todays weather
in Eleuthera is nothing short of cool. This year our unusual cooling trend
continues. The temperature today is down into the upper sixties in Eleuthera
today. The night time temperature is expected to dip into the lower to mid
fifties farenheit. The skies are overcast and there is a chance of some rainy
weather today in addition to the cold so wrap up warm and don’t forget your
jackets and hats. Never the less it’s a great day for the outdoors and the
beach. News Beware of
Piggy banks from here on in. That’s right the kids piggy banks may have some
danger in them according to who you are. A man locally, drunk at the time wandered
into a neighbors house with whom he was familiar and broke open the piggy
bank her kids had been keeping and stole a total of 56 dollars in coin. The
owner of the house pressed charges against the man and now he is in court
awaiting trial for the crime. Allegedly the man can face some jail time
stemming from some problems with other crimes and can face some jail time. So careful out
there when considering fooling around with seemingly harmless objects in
neighbors houses. Fishing Report Fishing is
largely suspended due to the extreme cold trend in the weather. Fishing will
resume and the daily fish market when the cooling trend in Tarpum Bay and
Eleuthera has lifted. More news from

January 2003 Weather Another great
day of weather in Eleuthera. What a bright open sky atmosphere and lots of
sunshine. The temperature today rose to around 75 degrees farenheit and there
was very little chance of rain today however tonight we did have a bit of
mild rain as the temperature has dipped into the mid sixties. It was a great
day for outdoors and having lots of fun on the beaches of Eleuthera. News Tomorrow at
the docks at Governors Harbor between the hours of 10am and 5pm there will be
the Arts and Crafts all day fair for Eleuthera. Many vendors and buyers will
be in and out of the location tomorrow so if your in eleuthera be there and
take part in this commercial event which is greatly needed on the island.
It’s a great encouragement for the crafts men of Eleutherea and a great way
to encourage creativity and growth for many artisans throughout the island. Fishing report Fishing has
been suspended now for a few days due to the rough seas caused by the onset
of the present coldfront activity coming down to us from the north. This
cooling, windy trend is responsible for the extreme cool weather we have
experienced in Eleuthera this year. Fishing and the daily fish market will
resume when the weather permits. You can however purchase frozen fish from
the many homes of our local fishermen. There are frozen fish stocks
available. Just drive into town and ask anyone where you can purchase some
freshly frozen fish or lobster. More news

January 2003 Weather Todays weather
in Eleuthera was delightful. The temperature today rose to a high of around
75 degrees and will drop to a low tonight of around 57 degrees farenheit. It
was a great day for the outdoors since the weather was nice and the skies
clear and bright. The skies were clear with a low chance of rain today. News A large area
of Government Crown land being cleared in Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera today. The
land clearing began yesterday afternoon after a thorough surveying job done
by Bahamian land Surveyers from another island in the country. There are a
lot of rumors surrounding the land clearing activity since once again no announcement or other notice was given by
government or other organization in Eleuthera to the residents of the
community. The land is located directly North of the vacant Batelco telephone
building here in Tarpum Bay. One of the
rumors surrounding the land clearing is that the government as they announced
earlier in the year was that they would be building an area of low cost
housing in the Tarpum Bay area this year. A well respected local contractor
is seen to be leading the project. Another rumor
surrounding the land clearing is that the government has given the land to
this contractor in order for him to build the low cost home estate. No one knows
presently as to the origin or the facts surrounding the land clearing.
Someone needs to know the facts locally in order to put these disturbing
rumors to rest. Fishing report Local
fishermen continue to do well in the seas surrounding the island of
Eleuthera. Quantities of large grouper, lobster and pan frying fish are still
being caught and available for sale daily in the fish market here in Tarpum
Bay. Come on down to the fish market for your supply of fish products most
days when the weather permits fishing. More news from

January 2003 Weather Weather in
Eleuthera today is a cool 73 degrees farenheit. Presently in Eleuthera there
is a cooling trend. The nighttime temperature is expected to drop down to 54 degrees
farenheit tonight. This is about the lowest the temperature ever gets in
Eleuthera. Last night the temperature in Eleuthera droped to below fifty.
This is cool and unusual weather for Eleutherians. The night time
temperatures are unusually cool and most Bahamian homes do not have heating. Enjoy your day
in Eleuthera today. The skies are clear with little chance of rain. The sun
is out and bright. It’s a great day for a sun tan or an outing to the cool
beach. News Friday the 24th
of January will be a day of history in Eleuthera in a way. The first annual
Eleuthera’s authentic Bahamian arts and crafts and farm produce fair will be
held in Governors Harbor at the dock side. The event will host displays of
authentic Bahamian produce and Bahamian/Eleutherian arts and crafts from all
over the island of Eleuthera. A book signing

literature will be displaying his work. If your in Eleuthera be there and
enjoy the event. The event opens at 10am in the morning and goes until 5pm in
the afternoon. Be there and enjoy the music, food and festivities. Tuesday in
Eleuthera is significant because of two events developing and growing in
Eleuthera. They are the coming of the weekly mail boats, the Eleuthera
Express and the Harley and Charlie mail boats. The other event is the weekly
meeting of the Eleuthera Haynes Library social weekly meeting at 10am on
Tuesday mornings. The coffee social is a great event which is hosted by the
Haynes library. If your in Eleuthera and you would like to meet some social
local inhabitants of the island of Eleuthera or some of Eleuthera’s
international home owners meet them at the Haynes library on Tuesdays. The
book club also meets on Tuesdays at the Haynes Library. Fishing Report Presently
conditions in Eleuthera allows for the daily fishing for the fishermen of
Eleuthera and Tarpum Bay. The fish market takes place daily in Tarpum Bay
from 2pm to 6pm. Come into Tarpum Bay by the sea shore daily to purchase your
supply of fresh fish products. Sold at the fish market daily are quantities
of Nassau grouper, fresh lobster, hog

January 2003 Weather Todays weather
in Eleuthera was another wonderful experience. The wind was blowing across
the island at around twenty knots. The temperature today was a cool 75
degrees farenheit. The skies were
clear and open most of the day with a cloud covering during the evening and a
60 percent chance of rain. The night time skies are clear with occasional
clouds. The night time temperature is a low 60 degrees. All in all it was a
great day for the outdoors and another wonderful day on our splendid island. News Fish fry in
Governors harbor is held every Friday night from 7pm to 12pm. After fish fry
the crowd continues the evening at the dance at Ronnies Rebel room on the Cay
across the bridge at Governors Harbor. Ronnies is located on the historic
Cupids Cay at Governors Harbor. Cupid Cay was settled by the Eleutherian
adventurers headed by willian sayles in 1648. Where better than a historic
place to have a wonderful evening of dancing and a party. Rosie Hepburn
is the food vendor at Ronnies resturant. Her specialty is out door barbecue. She
can be found at Ronnies on Friday and Saturday nights most weekends and
during holidays. See Rosie for a wonderful experience in wonderful island
cuisine late at night while having a fantastic time at Ronnies Rebel room. The Tarpum Bay
Methodist church choir had their annual cantata tonight at the tarpum Bay
Methodist church. All other churches were invited and refreshments were
served after the event. Fishing report Our fishermen
are experiencing some problems along the island as the grouper schools
continue to congregate just off of the coast of Eleuthera. Many cases of the
bens have been reported this fishing season as the result of the use of
compressors and fishermen having to go down so deep to get the groupers. Many
of the fishermen who use the compressors in order to catch the groupers are
inexperienced and untrained at the use of the compressor machine and the
instruction of diving. There is no official diving school on the island of
Eleuthera where the fishermen can go for training. Training is usually passed
down from one fisherman to the other by on the job training and word of
mouth. Fishermen simply lack the experience with the compressor machine and
diving and are experiencing difficulties with the bens in some areas of the
island including Tarpum Bay and the south of Eleuthera. In addition the lure
of the quick dollars earned from the quick catch of many schooling grouper
are a major cause of the problem. Let us pray for the further education and
safety of our local fishermen as we all try to enjoy the benefits of the
grouper season this year. More news from

January 2003 Weather Another day of
cool clear weather in Eleuthera today. The skies were clear and sunny all day
as the temperature sank into the mid sixties by night time. There was no
chance of rain today and only occasional cloudedness. It was a splendid day
for weather all in all. The coolness of the winter weather by far outmeasures
the heat of summer so visitors and Eleutherians alike are enjoying the
weather and they cooling trend this winter. All in all it was a beautiful day
for outdoors. Even a great day for tanning during the most extreme warmth of
the mid day. Enjoy the winter weather in Eleutherea. News With all the
deep sea diving going on on the east coast of Eleuthera there is some
potential for disaster although most divers using compressors on Eleuthera
are generally educated and experienced at doing so and for the past while
there has been no discouraging disasters. Two years ago we lost a diver from
Savannah Sound, our friend Mr. Gibson who had an ufortunate accident under
water and died as a result of diving under stressed conditions. Since then
things have been quiet as far as accidents and most Eleuthera fishermen have
been successful in their daily underwater adventures with the deep ocean. A friend of
our fisherman in Gregory town yesterday found himself with a severe case of
the bens lately due to a lack of decompression during a fishing trip for
schooling Nassau grouper yesterday. Let us hope for the health and wellness
of our fellow fisherman in Gregory Town. Diving has
become quite strenuous lately and divers have found themselves having to go
deeper and deeper into the ocean floor in order to gain an adequate catch of
lobster, conch or grouper for the day. The use of compressors, although
regulated by government has become more and more necessary in the lives of
divers and fishermen as of late recently. Stores in Spanish wells, the
capitol of fishing on Eleuthera if not in the Bahamas are filled with diving
compressors capable of taking divers on an extremely deep underwater
adventure or search for more succulent seafood for the hungry Bahamian
seafood market. In Eleuthera one of these compressor, underwater breathing
apparatus machines can sell for a cost of just over $2,000.00. This cost is
presently taken into consideration when the cost of the catch is calculated
and passed on to the consumer as an increase in the price of the catch. That
along with the extreme danger of encountering hungry sharks in the ocean
drives up the cost of the catch. The dangers associated with the use of the
compressors is also another important factor included in the pricing of the
catch. Over the years the cost of fish on the island of Eleuthera and the
Bahamas has increased significantly so much so that the average Bahamian
cannot afford to purchase a midsize to large size grouper anymore. The
catches are usually taken to Nassau to be sold in the restaurants or sold to
resturantuers locally. Local inhabitants here in Eleuthera now usually
purchase the less costly catch of panfried sized fish or conch. However with
the diminishing quantities of available seafood generally around the island
of Eleuthera the cost of fish is rising and quite soon I am afraid that fish
products will become but a memory for the palate of most average income
Eleutherians. The costs and availability are simply rising to high too fast.
That is why the government of the Bahamas are moving further into the fishing
industry daily with strict regulations and seasons for catching grouper, lobster
and soon regulations for catching conch. The lives and habits of island
fishermen will soon have to be regulated further in order to preserve a future stock of living sea food for the
next generation. Things are fastly becoming out of reach as the populations
appetite for fish products increases. Let us hope that there is still
sufficient time through regulation and
preservation to preserve through the government studies and regulation
activity, the quantities and lives of the seafood presently still surviving
in the rich waters off of the coast of Eleuthera and the other out Islands of
the Bahamas. We are told by the authorities that many countries in the
Caribbean have already lost many species of their seafood population due to
non regulation and overfishing practices. We still have a chance. Let us all
learn to respect the studies and the regulation activities of the Bahamas
Agricultural ministry and the conservation groups working to save the seafood
industry not only for ourselves but for the future generations of Bahamians
to follow us. This is a truly historic opportunity for Bahamians, especially
Bahamian fishermen to show that they firstly understand then care about the
preservation of their industry. We here in Tarpum Bay have been watching over
the past few years and have seen the shift slowly from an over abundance of
seafood to a shortening supply especially in the quantities of our beloved
conch and red snapper. There is still a chance Bahamians and water bound
visitors. Let us embrace that opportunity today. Groupers in
Eleuthera by the truck load may be a concept of the past. Preservation by
managing carefully and not destruction of an entire species of sea life is
the goal. Fishing report Grouper are
still schooling and are expected to be doing so until the end of the month.
Bahamian government have moved in their legislation to place a seasonal
restriction on the catching of spawning grouper beginning with the next up
coming season in 2003. New regulations for fishermen say that the new season
opens in November 2003 and closes in Feburary 2004. Limits on the amount of
grouper taken after this time are also being considered. Presently fisherman
are experiencing a boom in income all over the Bahamas. Nassau is said be
glutted with amount of the much favored Nassau grouper as fisherman continue
to harvest the plentiful fish in abundance still with reserves that are said
to last only for another five years according to the ministry of agriculture
if not regulated. A word to the wise is sufficient. More news from

January 2003 Weather Cool, dry weather
in Eleuthera today. The skies were bright and clear. The sun was out and
shining and the day was delightful with a cooler evening and a lot more wind.
The temperature dropped tonight to around sixty nine degrees farenheit. The day was a
great day for the outdoors and a suntan tomorrow is expected to be the same. News A friend today
reminded me of a tour we took of the settlement of Bannerman Town Eleuthera a
few weeks ago when we were on our way to the lighthouse beach at the furthest
eastern tip of the most southern peninsula of Eleuthera. On that tour we
encountered several old ruins of houses near the catholic church in the
vicinity of Princess cays. This is a real historic town. Bannerman town was a
growing metropolis on Eleuthera during the early days of the settling of the
island in the eighteen hundreds. During our
exploring we came upon the ruin of an old catholic church where the roof had
fallen in on both the rectory and the church. We were told that there was
also a graveyard on a nearby hill but we didn’t get that far as yet. We’ll
return to the site once I find out some more information about it. It was a
wonderful historic tour and we discovered many interesting things about the
ruins as we looked. The church was well used and attended in its day and was
said to serve the parish in Bannerman town well. There are many other ruins
around the small town were the ruins of old slave plantations and quarters
remain today like ghosts looking out from a century ago haunting the minds of
locals and visitors alike. If you like history and have a sense of adventure
you have to go to Bannerman town, hook up with one of its inhabitants who can
take you on a tour of the small village and give you a first hand look at
this former busy little village where the population was more than triple the
size of the existing population today. Fishing report Eleuthera and
Tarpum Bay, fishermen continue to catch record amounts of grouper fish. The
cost of this fish prohibits it from being sold to the locals locally so they
have to send them on to Nassau for sale in the many restaurants ad hotels
there. Natives
purchase smaller pan-frying fish which is said by the locals to be a sweeter
tasting bargain for them to flavour their pots. Fish like the red snapper, the
grunt, the Margaret fish and other varieties like this are the choice of the
native population of Eleuthera. More news from

January 2003 Weather Another day of
great weather in Eleuthera today. Its sunny and bright. The sun is out. The
temperature is cool and in the upper seventies to low eighties today. The
skies are clear and bright. There is no chance of rain today as we move along
the island. The seas are calm with a slight breeze over the island. Its
another great day for the outdoors and beaching. Enjoy your cool day in
Eleuthera today. Summer is just around the corner, remember. News Tarpum Bay is
once again populated by our friends from the great northern country of
Canada. Several longterm rentals are back in town again this year as our friends
from the country of Canada as here again with us in Tarpum Bay. Reportedly an
entire flight originating from Canada touched down in Eleuthera carrying on
it a number of Eleuthero Canadian visitors returning for the great winter
weather this year. We’re lucky to have them among us and we’re more than
happy to host them so enjoy yourselves our Canadian friends in Eleuthera and
Tarpum Bay. Today was the
weekly library day at Haynes library as friends and winter residents gathered
for a day of coffee, treats and good times again at the Haynes library in
Governors harbor, Eleuthera. We meet weekly so if your in Eleuthera come out

numbers of grouper fish continue to be caught as the grouper schools gather
off of the island of Eleuthera. Lots of grouper being sold at the fish
markets. There are great prices so if your in the market for some fantastic,
healthy tasting fish come to the Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera fish market anyday the
weather is good. Record numbers of grouper being caught by the local

January 2003 Weather It’s a warm
one today folks. The weather in Eleuthera today was hot and muggy. The
temperature climbed up to about 85degrees farenheit and brought back a
reminder of summer. Tonights high will be in the upper seventies. It’s a
warming trend and a welcome one from the flurry of cold fronts we have had
since before Christmas. The sun was
out today amid the clear skies brilliantly giving us another beach day or a
great day for out doors. If you wished for a sun tan in Eleuthera, today was
the day. News Eleuthera
resident Mr. Dewitte Miller was put to rest yesterday. He is the
policeman/barman/hotelunion rep that died about a week ago while crabbing in
Bannerman town Eleuthera. Mr. Miller is remembered by South Eleutherians and
others as a good father and a good citizen of the southern Eleuthera area. He
worked in his time to make this southern tip of the island a great
neighborhood filled with friendship a smile for every face and a great
neighborhood for his own. He will be remembered for all the good smiles and
greetings with which he daily greeted his neighbors and friends a great man
in all. His church service was well attended in a four hour church service he
was committed to heaven and taken to the grave yard where a few more hours of
ceremony sent his off to heaven with good wishes and the good hearts of his
friends and family attending. In other news
two other sons of Tarpum Bay was put to rest about a week ago, Mr. Martin
Nottage and Mr. Sonny McCartney both
residing in Nassau. Their funerals were attended by family in Nassau and from
the island of eleuthera. Fishing Report Fishing is in
the news today for the great turn around of the century. Grouper are
schooling off of the coasts of Eleuthera around this time of the year. Since
the fishermen have been diving via compressors they have connected with the
patterns of the grouper fish and have now caught up to their seasonal
spawning activity. Each of the groups of fishermen in Tarpum Bay diving for
grouper have done so well in their catch for the past few weeks. The weather
has turned and is now favourable for fishing and the fishermen are having a
whale of a time keeping up to their daily catches each outdoing the other
with their numbers of daily grouper catches. The record number of grouper
estimated to be caught by a fishing team in the village is around 110 large
fish. The grouper are however filled with rowe a sign of a pregnant fish and
it is feared that much damage in taking so many fish from the sea might eventually
hurt the grouper population. Elsewhere along the island other fishermen are
said to be catching numbers of grouper by the truck load and sending them to
Nassau where they can be sold for a maximum profit. The fishermen are wished
well as they continue to prosper and catch record numbers of grouper.
Hopefully this is the beginning of something in our village where all can
benefit greater from the fish trade. Perhaps in the future our local fishing
market can build to rival that of abaco and Spanish wells. More news from

degrees farenheit with clear skies and no chance of rain. The wonderful
atmosphere was a great day for beaching and a great day for the outdoors. We
hope you enjoyed Eleuthera today. News Just this
reminder that the annual victory celebration party of the Johnson Superstars
party is tomorrow night at their Junkanoo shack right here in Tarpum bay,

organization and the Taxi Cab union of the Bahamas. A funeral will
also be held in Deep Creek for one of their long serving community women
tomorrow evening. Eleuthera will

a quiet day in Eleuthera. The weathers great and everyone is back at work after
the holidays. The holidays were great. It was a successful time for the
junkanoo committees and in was a great time for all enjoyment in Eleuthera. Most of our
visitors and tourists have returned home so the island communities are quiet
and awaiting another holiday season when we can celebrate again the arrival
of our friends. Fishing There is
little fishing going on in Tarpum Bay these days. The waters are very cold
and the weather is not very favourable for fishing. Some of the local
fisherman are able to fish the atlantic waters on the eastern side of the
island for a few hours but not much is available in the daily fish market at
Tarpum Bay. I would advise you call one or several of the fisherman before

January 2003 Weather Favourable
weather in Eleuthera today. No rain, cool weather in the upper seventies and
lots of breeze. A great day for the outdoors and a great day for the beach. News All quieting
down on Eleuthera mainland. Many of our winter tourists have returned home.
Many of the home owners have left the island for their homes in the US and
other regions of the world. The island is quieting down and Eleutherians
getting back to their jobs. Troops leave
the US from Georgia today for the middle east in sight of the impending war
with Iraq. Our local Tarpum Bay resident Juliette Taylor may be in that
shipment of troops to the middle east since she is stationed with and
aircraft maintance operation team and was expecting to ship out as she
reported to friends in Tarpum Bay during her visit over the holidays. Our
hearts go out to her and her family as we wish them the most safety in these
proceedings. Be brave, be causious
and most of all represent Tarpum Bay well in the middle east. Fishing
reports Fishing has
largely been on hold for the past week due to the unclement weather in the
Atlantic and Caribbean seas. More favourable weather will come and fishing
daily will resume in the near future. Maintime Eleutherians are largely
enjoying the cold trend in the weather. More news from

the new year 2003. Many are attending those services. Eleutherians continue
to be faithful and serve our almighty God as we move forward despite the
tough economy. Tourism
numbers for the month of November and December are expected to take a
dramatic increase above the remainder of the year as tourism arrivals to the
island of Eleuthera soared to a high compared to the entire rest of the year.
We continue to pray for the economy in hopes that things might get better in
the future. We have had a grand time with our visiting friends and have
accomadated them in each way we could right here in Eleuthera. We continue to
expect them to return and bring more of their friends down for our wonderful
out island experience during the remainder of the year. Both Hotels and
restaurants faired good over the holidays and most were happy with the level
of tourist arrivals. The new year
came in with a loud bang with Baymen up all night on the water front lighting
fireworks and celebrating the incoming of the new year. It was a great time
for all who witnesses these self sponsored fireworks along the seashore. This
event takes place each year in many areas of the island and in Nassau as
people celebrate by lighting fire crackers and other forms of elaborate
fireworks. Our Junkanoo
parade here in Tarpum Bay brought in the New year as our dear friend from
Rain Bow Bay, Chris celebrated her 51st birthday with a small
party attended by close friends and other well wishers. Also our friend Jim and his wife
celebrated the memory of their daughter who passed away due to cancer several
years ago. Their daughter also visited Tarpum Bay with the couple each year
and loved the people and the village. Each year Jim and his wife celebrate
the memory of their darling daughther by holding a bon fire on Annies beach
at Rock sound Eleuthera. The beach is named after their daughter Annie. Fire
works, eats and drinks and the gathering of all good friends are a part of
that annual traditional event. All are invited to attend next year. So the holiday
season is wrapped up. We all had lots of fun, sun, cool winds and cool
weather all balled up into one Ultra special Eleuthera experience. If you
feel you wish to be a part of this entire experience don’t hesitate to email
me at: [email protected] in
order to make your bookings and have someone meet you at the airport when you
arrive on Eleuthera. We say the more the merrier and there are lots of houses
for rent, lots of cars and lots of caring people to receive you into our rich
wonderful Eleutherian holiday experience. Celebrate a special Christmas like
no other you have ever had in the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. What a
grand time you will have here. Fishing report Fishing is a
tough job for many of our local people, mostly men, one girl I know. The
winter weather with its unpredictable coldfronts touching down presents a
major challenge to the local fishing industry. They have to take many days
off due to the winter weather. Summer is usually much nicer weather and
allows them to catch up on the time they had to take off during the winter
season. The weather is loved however for non fishermen. People in Eleuthera
prefer the coolness of winter as opposed to the harsh heat of the summer
months so there is always appreciates the weather no matter how much of an
impedance it is to someone else. Cool winter weather is still loved by the
tourists and locals alike. It beats –20 below 0 and it sure beats the heat of
summer. Call before coming down to purchase fish products from Tarpum Bay
this week. The weather is erratic and not the nicest for the fishermen. More news from

January 2003 Weather Todays weather
was another cool day in Tarpum Bay. The temperature was low in the seventies
and the wind was blowing strongly especially over the waterfront. News Happy New year
and a good year to all expected this fourth day of January 2003. May all your
wishes and wants come to you this year. Just another usual
day in the lives of hard working Eleutherians who do their utmost to maintain
their way of life and their good life style. Lots of
friends in for the Christmas season. Eleuthera saw an explosion in the number
of people/tourist coming to the island this winter. Hopefully that trend will
continue into the year despite the impending war in the gulf region. We are
hoping that the Bahamas tourism is not negatively effected by that impending
standoff in the gulf between America and Iraq. One of our own, Juliette
Taylor is a member of the American armed forces and our hearts go out to
Juliette Taylor who is now to be stationed at an airbase in Kuwait. Hope all
goes well for you Juliette. Best wishes from you hometown people here in
Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera. The holiday
season was marked this year in Eleuthera and Nassau a number of activities to
encourage the participation and spectatorship of our many tourist visitors
and homeowners. December 14th saw the start of the second annual
Tarpum Bay, Junior Junkanoo parade during which the Tarpum Bay public school
won out against hatchet Bay and Rock Sound public schools. The lighting
of the tree ceremony and gospel concert just prior to the holiday was an
awesome addition to the Christmas season. It will be and annual event we are
told so that the event can be apart of the traditional holiday celebration
for Tarpum Bay and its inhabitants. Then Christmas day met us in a
celebratory mode for our senior Junkanoo parades which showcases the artistic
talents of our Junkanoo boys and girls, the Johnson Superstars walked away
with the overall trophy with the invaders winning in the best music category.
Truly with the amount of time put into the preparation of Junkanoo this year
the junkanoo groups came out fantastic. Don’t forget
the first annual Krupp survivor series which was featured by Johnny Krupp and
his gang of Chicagoian visitors and local friends on mixed teams. The,
“Tarpum bay, Eleuthera vitches,” won the event with much competition.
Hopefully they’ll be able to retrieve their trophy from the new owner. Main time in
Nassau there were five junkanoo parades as the celebrated their tributes
through each having a separate junkanoo parade nightly for five nights along
the streets of downtown Nassau and the cable beach area in West bay street.
These were new spectacular events which further brought out the artistic
genious of many a junkanoo artist in the city of Nassau where Junkanoo is
almost now a practiced religion. They are more devoted to junkanoo than possibly
devoted the church. Junkanoo
continues to grow and develop a great name and reputation as the number one
export of the Bahamas their pride and culture this fantastic junkanoo art.
Many Bahamians are asking themselves the question of whether or not we should
invest and develop Junkanoo further. Where can we go from here while still
maintaining our unique junkanoo rhythm and flavor. We do not want to pollute
or contaminate the system and the process. There is a call to go back to
Junkanoo purity and many are afraid of the amounts of investment dollars
being thrown into Junkanoo by the government. Many challenge the authentic
reliance of the art of Junkanoo and claim that it will not take us far and is
not a prudent area for further government investment. We have to ask the
questions and answer them ourselves as we go forward into uncharted waters in
terms of future growth in the Bahamas.
In terms of Junkanoo, how far do we want to go in dumping millions of
dollars into an unregulated carnival activity although cultural and somewhat
sound. We’ll see what happens as the years come and go. Lets hope that we are
making the right decisions in the maintime with our hard earned investment
dollars. We’ll let the parliament know in due time where we stand on that issue.
Fishing report Fishing has
largely been suspended since the christmmas season this year brought with it
unpredictable weather and cold windy weather and cold fronts. Some fishermen
are still fishing so if you want to
take the chance to come on down for the drive you might find a fisherman in
the harbor cleaning and selling fish. It just depends on the seas and the
weather. More News from

December 2002 Weather Cozy weather
these days as the temperature has dropped almost ten degrees farenheit since summer
in august. The high today was eighty degrees farenheit as the winter weather
wore on in Eleuthera today. The skies were clear and all together it was a
wonderful clear day for all. The sun was out and shining warm in most areas.
It was a great day for the outdoors. News A major drug
bust in Eleuthera and the Bahamas. Police yesterday arrested as many as fifty
two Eleutherians in an effort to capture the drug kingpins they were looking for.
Palmetto Point, Gregory Town, Savanna Sound were all points where the police
along with the DEA of the United States used helicopters for transportation
and swooped down collecting doctors, clerks, truck drivers, businessmen and a
few more people as they bore on as they have vowed in the past to clean up
the drug trade and the transhipment of drugs in the Bahamas. Eleutherians
were both astonished and ashamed at persons who were arrested in the round
up. Never the less the police has
indicted five of the alleged kingpins in the drug trade in the Bahamas today
and have charged them with various charges including drug trafficking
charges. The men were arrained in court today and are awaiting court hearings
pertaining to bail. They are said by the authorities to be awaiting charges
in connection with being extradited to the United States of America where
they are charged with numerous counts of drug trafficking. Local and
international Television and radio stations are carrying official news clips
and video footage of the drugs and the alleged drug king pins, several
descending from the island of Eleuthera. In more news
today Eleutherians are poised for the Christmas holidays and various
organizations like the government offices, the police and the private
organizations will be holding their annual Christmas parties in their own
respective locations all along the island. This activity will continue up to
and throughout the Christmas holidays. Fishing Report Fishermen
continue to take advantage of the good weather in catching major loads of
fish products from the surrounding seas surrounding the island of Eleuthera.
You can purchase quantities of fish products from the various locations on
the docks at the fish market at Tarpum Bay daily. See you there. Get your
supplies of fish while the good weather lasts. More news from

December 2002 Weather Breezy, cool
and delightful day in Eleuthera today. The temperature today got up to 85
degrees farenheit. Tonight will be cool down around 75 degrees farenheit. The
breeze is blowing and the sun was out the entire day for a splendid winters
day. It was a great day for outdoors and a great day for winters enjoyment on
the island of Eleuthera. News What a
splendid day for Junkanoo yesterday was. Four settlements from Eleuthera
competed for a grand prize in the second annual Junior junkanoo day parades
in Beautiful, picturesque Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera. Thousands of Eleutherian and
foreign Junkanoo fans gathered at the baseball park bay street drive as the
crowds began to gather from 1 pm in the afternoon. The parades and passing of
the four towns junkanoo groups went on until 9pm at the bay street location.
What junkanoo talent exhibited as the public schools competed and showed off
their exclusive works of Junkanoo. Everyone had a fabulous time as the
evening wore on to the sound of the percussion Junkanoo beat. But in the end
it was Tarpum Bay, public school who came out as the victor in the contest
winning first prizes in both costume and music as they blew away the
competition with a spectacular showing this year. The winner of the parade
gets to host the event each year and this is the second year that Tarpum Bay
got to host the event since they won both times. Now they will host the event
and come out even more prepared next year as they prevent their coveted prize
in Junkanoo from being taken by the other towns. Next years competition will
be hot. The costumes and the colors displayed be each group from the four
towns were both fitting and spectacular.
See you there next year. After Junkanoo
and Christmas this year Mr. Johnny Krupp announced to this reporter that he
will be hosting a survivor like Eleuthera competition for his group of
visitors from the United States of America. Each year for the past twenty or
more years Johnny and his wife Lisa have been hosting themselves and their
friends here in beautiful Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera. In fact Christmas here would
not be the same without them in the community we are so used to seeing and
being apart of their hospitality here. They are well loved and respected by
the community as they spend their Christmas vacations here every year. We are
looking forward to meeting their friends and having a great time hosting the
survivor series Eleuthera style. May the festivities and the competition
carry one. Hooray to you all Johnny and Lisa as we enjoy the festive
Christmas season here in beautiful Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera. Things should be
spectacular this year. Fishing report Today was
another day for fishing in Tarpum Bay. There were grouper and conch sold at
great prices and purchased by both local and foreigners here at the local
fish market. Come on down for your share of fabulous fish products. More News from

December 2002 Weather Today has been
another in a splendor of beautiful days in Eleuthera. The temperature was
around the usual 83 degrees with occasional cloudy skies and a slight breeze blowing
across the island from sea to sea. The chance of rain stood at a 60% rate
with occasional scattered showers in the evening. What a wonderful day for
the outdoors it was. News The Christmas
season was officially started with a large bang in the country of the Bahamas
today with the beginning of the Junkanoo parades starting in Nassau with the
12th annual Junior Junkanoo parades today in Nassau and the
official opening coming in Eleuthera this evening with the evening Gospel
concert which commemorated the first official lighting of the Christmas tree
in beautiful picturesque Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera. In attendance at the grand
Gospel concert was the speaker of the house of the Government Assembly of the
Bahamas, and the member of parliament of the constituency of the grand South
Eleuthera island, Mr. James Oswald Ingraham. This first annual grand Gospel
concert like many others on the island showcases much of the talent of the
Eleutherian and Bahamian cultural and in particular musical talent we have here
on the island. My how Eleutherian musicians and women in particular can sing.
These events bring out the essential talents that many people on the island
of Eleuthera can exploit would there have been an agency to assist them in
their professional musical development. Time will tell and as the talent
grows I predict that some Eleutherians will see great things coming out of
these numerous musical talent pools as time grows. Case in point,
the Dr. and Reverend Reg Eldon while attending our annual South Eleuthera
Methodist harvest festival was able to hear through his attendance and
prescence to speak at the nights service the splendid singing of two of our
lovely night and gales, ms. Nicara Gardener and another ms. Hall from Rock
Sound, Eleuthera. Reverend Dr. Reg
Eldon was so impressed with the singing talent of the two song birds that he
immediately made an official request to have them flown into Nassau to attend
and showcase their gifts for singing at the National annual meeting of the
Methodist Church council meetings in Nassau, Bahamas. So that the rest of the
nation can see some of the talent for singing and music coming out of his
district of South Eleuthera. There is no telling where talent can take one so
just be ready when the calling comes to showcase your talent wherever you are
and whatever gift you have to share with the remainder of the world. The religious
community in the Bahamas and Eleuthera has taken the lead to showcase and
make a commitment and a stand to show the world exactly the purpose of the
season of Christmas this season, let us be worthy and take note and worship
our lord and saviour this season in whatever ways we can. The resounding
theme of the gospel concert was that Jesus birth and his place in our lives
is the reason for the season. We thank God
for another year and another wonderful Christmas season in the settlement of
Tarpum Bay and the island of Eleuthera and the Bahamas this year. Performing in
tonights Christmas tree lighting concert were the following: Singing were: Rev. Charles
Rolle, The Methodist church youth choir, Rap singers R.E.L, Latiesha
Sweeting, Methodist church choir, Revival Baptist Youth choir, Ebenezer
Gospel Chapel Choir-Governors Harbor, Ms. Melissa Dorsette, Bro. Brad Ferguson, Highway gospel
singers, M.C. for the
evening: Reverend
Joseph Hall Musical
selections: Joseph Jr. and
Joel Hall Special
speakers: Hon. J. Oswald
Ingraham M.P. South Eleuthera, Bro. Ian
Carey, Pastor Brenville Nottage, Rev. Godfrey Bethel, Bro. Henry T. Allen Fishing Report The weather
appears to be holding so expect lots of boats to be out fishing in the
Caribbean and Atlantic waters off the coast of Eleuthera during the next few
days. There will be lots of fish products available for sale locally at the
fish market daily in Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera dialy. Come on out and purchase
your fish products or just come out to enjoy the noise of the market and the
talent of the fishermen here on the island of Eleuthera as they prepare their
catches for market. It’s a
wonderful entertaining experience. See you there. More News from

2002 Weather Another
gorgeous weather day in Eleuthera today. The skies were partially cloudy with
occasional thunder showers however it did not rain. The local temperature was
around 82 degrees. The sun was out
with a slight breeze across the landscape. News A local lady,
a resident of Tarpum Bay, today stunned by a horse crossing the Rock Sound
Farms at three bays ran off the road to avoid hitting the animal. As a result
of her avoidance of the horse her nice truck was wrecked by the trees lining
the side of the road. The unfortunate accident happened around 1:30PM in the
afternoon when the horse suddenly appeared from its normal pasture area into
the public road blocking traffic. During the incident the lady was not
injured but is checking with the doctors for any eventuality. Our best wishes
are with the family. We know that all will be well. Now that we
are entering the Christmas season the local government board of Tarpum Bay
are stepping up their efforts at cleaning up the community for the Christmas
season. The roadsides are lawn mowed and clipped, all garbage bagged and
carried away by the garbage men. Extra garbage barrels for collection of
garbage are put in place by the local board of works and their efforts are
plausible and stepped up normally during the yule tide season and the summer
season when kids are out of school and looking for a summer job. Thanks to
the Tarpum Bay, local board of works the community will be cleaner and look
much nicer to our local population and our visiting guests for the Christmas
season. This is a very important part of community life in areas like Tarpum
Bay and the good work should continue throughout the year. Fishing Report The daily
fishing has resumed for most fishermen on the island. The waters are calm and
clear as the cold fronts subside from our Caribbean and Atlantic waters. We
are looking forward to purchasing lots of fish products on a daily basis at
the local fish market. Come on down to Tarpum Bay for your supply of fresh
fish products. More news from

December 2002 Weather A lovely cool
lday in Eleuthera. The sun was out and shiny. Clear skies and no rain in
sight. Its gorgeous weather in the mid seventies. What a gorgeous time to be
in Eleuthera and the Bahamas. It’s a great day for the outdoors and a
wonderful time for beaching and
outdoor parties. News The proprietor
of the Pink Elephant night club has a birthday today. There will be a party
open to the public open at the night club, the pink Elephant later this
evening. Members of the public are invited. The Bahamas is
facing a crisis situation with the influx of illegal Hatian immigration to
the Bahamas from Haiti. There will be a high level meeting of both
governments on the subject next week as they both sit down and try to hammer
out a working agreement on how to approach and control the illegal Hatian
Illegal Immigration for the Bahamas. Our friends
from Finland are with us this week as we go into the Christmas season. We
welcome them and hope that they enjoy the local festivities leading up to the
Christmas holidays. Fishing Report Fishing has
resumed for the past two days since the weather has calmed down and the cold
fronts have subsided for now. We hope the weather holds good at least until
after the Christmas holidays. This may be only a wish for us. More news from

December 2002 Weather Another day of gorgeous weather in Eleuthera. Lots of cool
breeze wind blowing at around 30knots in gusts. The sun is out and shiny with
occasionally scattered clouds. There is about a 60% chance of rain and the
cold front is expected to continue for at least another two days. News Luther Cartwright died two days ago from complications of
his illness in Nassau. He is the father of the local guy here in Eleuthera we
call little ounce. He is survived by Mrs. Florence Morley, Ms. Babara
Cartwright, Mrs. Iris Cartwright and many others in the Community of Tarpum
Bay. The Christmas season is upon us and all in the air is
junkanoo. There is little else other than that going on in Eleuthera. The
economy is in the dumps and people are setting their minds on the holiday
season in order to restore their hopes in humanity and an economy which is
expected and predicted to improve over the course of the new coming year.
We’ll have to wait and see about that. Lost at sea for a few hours was a boat load of fishermen
from Tarpum Bay who encountered stormy weather from the cold front. Lost for
a few hours until discovered at Cape Eleuthera, Bahamas was Roderick Kojack
Taylor, Mel Allen, and O’neil Johnson. The boys pulled into Cape Eleuthera to
avoid the seriously choppy seas the remainder of the way home. They were
picked up at Cape Eleuthera by a few boatsmen from Tarpum Bay. Fishing Report The weather has changed again and another cold front is
upon us. The seas are muddy and the breeze has intensified. This makes it extremely dangerous for fishermen in
small boats to travel in this weather. Therefore the fishing season is ending
here in Tarpum Bay for the year and there may not be much fish for purchase
until the end of or during the new year.
