Weather

Tarpum Bay is blessed with pleasant mild weather. Bordering on summer as the temperature today climbs up into the low eighties Fahrenheit. The skies are partially cloudy with some chance of rain late this afternoon or during the night. Its beautiful weather for the outdoors and the beach.

Enjoy our beautiful Tarpum Bay, Weather today.

News, Articles, poetry

Christmas junkanoo went off with much visitors and fanfare here in Tarpum Bay. The event was supposed to start at 6pm but didn’t get off to a good start until 7:30PM when the Governors Harbor Africans arrived with their Junkanoo theme, ”Remember Africa.”

Tarpum Bay kicked of their beginning rush lap with the theme, ”Welcome to family moments.” Mostly all went well as well wishers and Christmas partiers looked on, drank beer, at conch fritters and barbecued chicken and generally had a great time in good old Tarpum Bay.

The event was well attended. Lots of people were there from all over the world, mostly the Bahamas and the US. They all went home gyrating and happy.

Tarpum Bay won the fun Junkanoo event beating out Governors Harbour overall with best costumes, best music and best dancing. A disgruntle Governors Harbour sweared they would be back again to win the event and have the parade then shifted by proxy to Governors Harbour.

The event was as much fun as Jr. Junkanoo.

Fishing Report

Fishing will resume after the holidays on Sunday and Monday. So come down to Tarpum Bay for the best in fresh grouper, lobster and other varieties of fried fish.

Weather

What a wonderful day of weather today. Not too hot, not too cool, a cool 84 degrees Fahrenheit today in Eleuthera with clear sunny skies. What truly delicious winter weather today.

Enjoy our Eleuthera weather today.

News, Articles and Poetry

Many of our friends have returned this Christmas to celebrate the season with us. Suzie, Lisa and Johnny Krupp, John and Katie Jones, Mike from St. Louis and many others are here. Many more will be arriving before the big holidays. Sharon, Tasha, Di and the crew will be down soon. Bob and the boys will arrive on Friday. So along with all of us its gonna be a fun time in Tarpum Bay for the holidays.

Come on down and join in the fun.

Jr. Junkanoo got off without much of a snag on Saturday evening. Seven groups from Whymm’s Bight, Green Castle, Rock Sound, Tarpum Bay and Hatchet Bay showed up for the grand event. With little controversy in the judging, Hatchet Bay took home the over all trophy and won the event.

Next year, that means that Jr. Junkanoo will be held in Hatchet Bay. It should be another great junkanoo event for Eleuthera. Tarpum Bay Jr.’s are looking forward to regaining the trophy at that time.

See you there.

Senior Junkanoo kicks off 7pm December 25th in Tarpum Bay. Then on the 26th we’ll all be in Rock Sound to enjoy their junkanoo event.

Poem

Eternal Hope

I have lived with ancient ties

As men have lived for centuries

As of late and so found

A connection to the past

Of peace and tranquility

The hopeful reign of many

As many in life’s expanse passing

I have seen men land on the moon

And re-float ships of centuries

Old, giving up their treasure

As cheerfully as the day is gleaned

These early morning hours arouse

The philosopher in me

And I am given to these final prose

As to nothing else I love so well

Life and liberty, knowledge and power

In this eternal quest for the sky

Fishing Report

The government of the Bahamas has announced a ban on the taking of the Nassau Grouper from December 30th 2004 to February 01st 2005. Additionally a further ban is placed on the grouper fishing from December 15th 2005 until February 2006.

At that time the grouper stocks will be surveyed and if there has been the significant increase in numbers as expected the ban on grouper fishing will be lifted or further applied as necessary.

Enjoy your fresh grouper for the last two weeks this December. There are still lots of grouper being caught in Eleuthera now a day.

Black Majority Rule

By George Major

Who guides your future?

Who gave you the way?

To control our lives?

The way we live today?

That gross black tyranny

So wild and so vain

It gave you the spirit

You gave us the pain

We were victims like religion

When majority rule came

You’ve pillaged and plundered

You’ve tattered and torn

Robbed us of a future

Since the day we were born

Now trapped in confusion

With your superior view

We’ll fight for our freedom

What do you expect us to do?

News, Articles and Poetry

Jr. Junkanoo got its biggest trial as the young participants and adult supporters gathered in the streets near the community park bayside Tarpum Bay last night. This is one of a few days of practices before the big explosion of Jr. Junkanoo parades right here in Tarpum Bay on Saturday December 13th at 3pm.

Senior Junkanoo will take place in two places this year. Firstly in Tarpum Bay on the evening of December 25th at 7pm then early morning December 26th, boxing day in Rock Sound, Eleuthera. There’s lots of junkanoo for all to enjoy on these occasions so be sure to find yourself on Eleuthera in both Tarpum Bay and Rock Sound to enjoy the best of Eleuthera junkanoo on these dates.

See you there.

Fishing Report

The seas are rough at the moment. Fishing is suspended for a few more days until the weather clears up. When that happens the grouper fishing will continue. This year has been a record year in grouper harvesting in Tarpum Bay.

This may very well be the last year of such abundant harvest of spawning, schooling grouper in the Bahamas. The Ministry of Agriculture have imposed new dates of the no take season and zones for the Nassau grouper in order to preserve the species.

Weather

Chilly days in Eleuthera right now. The temperature is up to 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Its quite cool however a welcome change from the summer heat. Many Eleutherians are loving the weather and give it much praise. The cooling trend is expected to continue for the next month or so with warm, clear, sunny days occasionally, not much rain expected.

News, Articles and Poetry

The buzz around town is Junior Junkanoo. Saturday the 13th of December is the big day when the island wide Jr. Junkanoo competition will take place. About four settlements will converge on Tarpum Bay, last years winner, to participate.

The winner will have next years junkanoo parade in their town. Tarpum Bay has won the event for the past two years. The competition is expected to be stiff with several towns threatening to take home this years prize.

Eats and drinks will be sold at the concession stand and prizes for the various junkanoo categories will be given.

See you in Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera Saturday evening for our annual Jr. Junkanoo day parades. Its going to be a grand affair. In fact many predict that the Jr. Junkanoo parades this year will top the senior junkanoo parades on December 25th.

Merits of Island Life

What more want in this dream called life

On this winters afternoon?

For what good is wanting everything

If one arrives too soon?

What is the rush with us everyday?

As we tarry on our merry way

Take your time and get there in array

One lovely afternoon

What good is summer without the warmth?

Or the colors of an early fall

With pleasant time you’ll have it all

One lovely afternoon

What good is work without the sweat?

Or life without the after death?

What good is love without bereft?

Be sure to see it all

And if you miss it in one gush

Your living life in such a rush

Come to the shore and rest and such

One lovely afternoon

Fishing Report

After much confusion over the controversy over fishing rights fishing in Tarpum Bay has returned to normal with our fishermen bringing in record catches of grouper and lobster. The boys are fishing hard this year since they realize that this will be one of the best seasons for schooling grouper with the appointment of  the new fishing regulations for schooling grouper soon.

Todays and yesterdays catches totaled well into the thousands of pounds as fishermen spent the entire day on into the night involved in the fishing and the cleaning(processing) of grouper fish.

Life goes on in our seaside village. All eyes and ears are listening for the Christmas cheer.

Dilemma Over Grouper Fishing Rights In Eleuthera

About five Am this morning Dread, Shine, Kojak, Kegan and the boys left Tarpum Bay for Savannah Sound beach where they parked their Four Boston Whaler boats over night expecting an early start at fishing the Grouper schools off of the coast of Windermere Island this morning.

Upon arrival the close-knit group of fishermen discovered that they had been the victims of some brutal and costly sabotage.

The electrical wires on each of the four motors of the boats were sliced with brutal costly consequences rendering them useless. This bit of overnight sabotage has caused the fishermen many days delay in fishing and is costing them thousands of dollars in repairs of their expensive outboard motor engines essential to their fishing livelihood.

Immediately the group thought the young boys of Savannah Sound were responsible for the unconscionable damage to their boats and motors since they were obviously within the region of the boats overnight. They did have the opportunity to do the damage if they wished and had the ill-will of mind to do so.

The reason also why they have come to this conclusion is because there is some ongoing tension between themselves and the Savannah Sound boys who also fish for a living.

The Savannah Sound boys, they say are responsible for this damage because they do not want to have the Tarpum Bay boys fishing in their village for the grouper off of the coast of Savannah Sound.

The Grouper in the region of Eleuthera have begun to school over the last few weeks and the catches for the Tarpum Bay fishermen have been excellent until this point of sabotage. They have had great success this year supplementing their income with the many pounds of grouper they catch daily this month to supply both the Eleuthera market and the Nassau market with the additional pounds of grouper filet.

It is not known at this time exactly who is to blame for the disaster and damage caused to the Tarpum Bay boys boats since no one in Savannah Sound has reported seeing anyone interfere with the parked boats on the beach overnight. It is only the opinion of the Tarpum Bay boys based on the tension between them and the Savannah Sound Fishermen and the fact that over the last several weeks the Savannah Sound boys have ran Spanish Wells Fishermen out of the settlement for attempting to fish the same grouper schools that exist off of the coast of Savannah Sound.

Apparently they say that the Savannah Sound boys do not even consistently fish the grouper schools off of their coasts but still boastfully lay claim to any fish off of their area. They erroneously, according to the Tarpum Bay boys, lay claim to these territorial grouper stocks.

The boys of Tarpum Bay have reported the matter to the local police who are now investigating the matter.

They ask themselves the question, ”Who can lay claim to fish in The Sea in the Bahamas in any area?” All Bahamians are owners of these marine sea life and have the freedom to fish anywhere in the Bahamas they so choose.

For this reason the Boys of Tarpum Bay cannot understand the reason for such outright cruelty and sabotage to them and their fishing vessels.

As for now all they can do is spend their time repairing the unnecessary damage to their motors and boats and spend their time preparing for when they will return to the waters of the Atlantic to take advantage of what is perhaps the last open season for the schooling Nassau Grouper.

The Ministry of Agriculture has announced a ban on taking schooling/spawning grouper in January of 2004 and February of 2004.  It is a locally known fact that December is the best month for catching the schooling grouper in this region.

Because of this fact and some other factors several people also believe that this sabotage was caused by some misguided ecological minded individual or individuals.

Time will tell. Hopefully the police’s investigation will turn up some much needed facts in the matter.

Weather

What wonderful weather we’re having. It’s cool and balmy out. The temperature is around 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Its almost ideal weather with its cloudy cool skies and long hours in the morning.

This is the kind of weather Island dwellers love. We’ve waited all year for this spell of cool weather. It’s a great contrast to 92 degree summer heat.

Enjoy our Eleuthera winter weather when you get the chance. See you here.

News articles and poetry

Sing out loud.  Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat, please put a penny in the old mans hat.”

The Christmas season is upon us as the weather depicts. It’s cool and nice and Eleutherians are enjoying the weather and the season.

The news today is the fish. Thousands of pounds of grouper are being caught here in Eleuthera. The season is going well for the fishermen who should realize record amounts of income based on the amount of fish they are catching. Lots of grouper for the dinner plate. And for people who love the fish. Grouper, grouper, grouper and more grouper for sale.

The grouper that cannot be sold in the local market is shipped to Nassau for sale to hotel and restaurant properties. Local fishermen do well from this enterprise.

Grouper rowe is another favorite of the grouper fish locally. The seasoned egg sacs of the grouper that are caught are a delicious snack for local people. Seasoned well and deep-fried, dry the delicious eggs are a delicacy. The liver is also a favorite. Also fried dry the liver is a favorite for some to make sandwiches just like one would a hamburger. It’s a delicious snack.

Fire in Harbour Island, Eleuthera

Fire on Bay Street: Quick Community Reaction Saves Centuries-Old Sugar Mill November 25, 2003/8:30p EST

Fire destroyed the Office of Tourism on the second floor of the Sugar Mill Building at the foot of Government dock last night, but quick cooperative action by residents and visitors saved the neighboring buildings.

The fire broke out around 8:30 p.m. according to witnesses. Diners at Harbour Lounge, the Landing, and Rock House saw flames shooting high into the sky and sounded the alarm. Susan Neff, former chef at Coral Sands who was dining at Rock House, said she thought the entire block was about to catch.

Volunteers formed a bucket brigade to draw water from the bay, but getting buckets of water up to a second story blaze is no easy task.

Firefighters stood on the roof of Doris Dry Goods, the building to the south, to get access. The choir practicing at the Methodist church heard shouts from the street and dashed down together to join the firefighters.

The fire leapt to the roof of Dunmore School, the neighboring building to the north. While the brave fire fighters contained it, school director Patricia Masisak organized the school's staff and rounded up volunteers to clear out the school's computers, furniture, and books, moving some to private homes and the rest to the school's back yard where the crew of women covered everything with a huge tarpaulin.

We expect they'll appreciate help putting the school back together and repairing the damage.

Juanita Percentie, owner of the new office supply store by Bank of Canada, said, "We were fortunate to have the BEC truck to give us the high ground."

The men maneuvered the truck's cherry-picker arm above the fire line giving both a downward water source and a vantage point from which to spot sparks and hidden trouble spots.

And where was the island's fire truck? The ancient pumper housed on Gaol street is no longer in service. Fire chief Jefferson Johnson expressed frustration that he could have put out the fire sooner with the proper equipment.

A fund to purchase and manage a new truck needs new blood. Although some funds have been collected, former committee chief Robert Arthur has had to attend to other pressing issues, and several members of the Fire Fund committee have left the island, leaving the effort stalled.  Robert Arthur has met with local government to discuss the situation, and The Briland Modem Fund continues to raise funds for a new truck for the island, which have totalled $10,000 to date.

As a temporary measure, it has been suggested that the island purchase a simple pump truck that would be cheaper and require less effor to maintain.  Details of such a program can be found at www.myharbourisland.com.

Meanwhile, Leon Johnson of Bottom Harbour Club saw the flames from his restaurant on Eleuthera and called Tourism director Raymond Harrison, who also lives on Eleuthera. "You better get over there," he said. "Your office is on fire."

Harrison reported that new furnishings had just been installed last week. "But thank God no one was hurt and we kept it from spreading," he said. We'll be back in business tomorrow."

It was too soon to know how much damage there is to the Sugar Mill gift shop on the ground floor owned by Norma Albury and Elizabeth Bethel.

At last report, an investigation into the cause of the fire will begin on Wednesday.  Early reports suggest an electrical shortage may have sparked the blaze.

Many, of course, recalled the last major fire on Harbour Island when Valentine's burned in 1999. In both cases, the wind was a huge factor.

Artist and former Councilmember Harvey Roberts, who had just finished dining at the Harbour Lounge, and who has painted one of the most famous images of that beloved building, said, "The first thing I checked was the wind. It was blowing west, straight out to the bay. I prayed that it stayed that way, because the Harbour Lounge is a wooden building, and would have
been lost if the wind shifted."

Councilmember Tavar Sawyer summed up what everyone on Harbour Island was feeling. "We've got plenty to be thankful for this Thanksgiving season. Especially now. I'm thankful the damage wasn't worse, and I'm proud of my fellow Brilanders. We worked togther like a community. Everyone side by side. You could feel the love."

Fishing Report

Fishermen have divided themselves in small groups in order to conserve gasoline use and fight incurring additional expenses on fishing supplies. Their goal is to find the elusive massive grouper schools they found last year and capitalize on them. The search goes on and each day more and more lobster, crab and grouper are brought out to the cleaning tables as a result of these groupings of very experienced fishermen here in Tarpum Bay and else where along the island of Eleuthera.

We hope that they are successful in finding some grouper and earning a good income from their efforts.  We also hope that we are able to manage the delicate balance between taking the fish and leaving sufficient there to sustain the survival of the species as well.

13 Korean boats anchored off of Andros, awaiting a fish processing vessel to join the fleet, are causing a big stir as government agencies moved in over the past few days to confiscate them in order to investigate and determine ownership of the vessels.

According to Bahamian maritime law a boat in Bahamian waters fishing and taking from the marine environment must be a Bahamian owned vessel. Apparently there is some question of the real ownership of the Korean vessels. More on this story tomorrow.

News, Articles and Poetry

As you might have recognized we were off for the past week. Here below is where we were and this is the good time being had by all at the Bahamas One World Film Festival. Founder Mrs. Monica Cooper hosted a grand event. We all had a great time.

The Bahamas One World Film Festival

By George Major

The Inaugural Bahamas One World Film Festival took place in New Providence at the Wyndam Cable Beach Hotel, during November 13th to the 17th.

Due to logistical problems and a strike action taken by local film projectionist the box office portion and the audience evaluation for the film festival did not take place as planned.

The film festival was a success however as it attracted dozens of film makers from America, Canada, Australia and other locations around the world to screen their films in the Bahamas.

Though local audience participation, as planned, was a great loss to the festival the overall screening of participating films was successful thanks to the staff at the Rain Forest Theater, Cable Beach Casino.

Individual filmmakers praised festival organizer Monica Cooper, for the more intimate moments experienced among participants.  The additional time together created a bond in a manner that will perhaps be the trademark of the Bahamas One World Film Festival. Ironically due to the lack of audience involvement and a smaller schedule of films, which were to be screened at local cinemas, like Galleria and RND, filmmakers had substantial amounts of time together to discuss and exchange their ideas.

This aspect of time together Daniel Zirilli, producer of the movie “The Stonecutter” expressed was considered a valuable aspect of the film festival.

Among the more than thirty films screened at the film festival was, Ron Mann’s movie documentary starring Woody Harrelson who is also in the Bahamas starring in the upcoming currently, in production film, “After the Sunset.”  Actor Peirce Brosnan, Woody’s co-star, and his lovely wife were also in attendance for the screening of Woody’s new movie at RND Cinema West.

In other discussions at the film festival HollyWood Producer,” ” along with screen writer,” ” gave a symposium on some of the unique aspects of film production in the Bahamas and its beneficiary aspects. Their film,” ” is scheduled to begin production in January here in the Bahamas while local casting and pre-production are already underway.

Mario Van Peebles also attended the festival and unfortunately had to leave the festival for a pressing engagement just a few hours before he was scheduled to receive a Bahamas One World Film Festival award for his father, the film producer,” __Van Peebles.”

The upcoming second Bahamas One World Film Festival scheduled to take place November 12th to the 16th 2004 will be held with much enthusiasm and anticipation as the first at the Wyndam, Cable Beach Hotel.

Screenings of locally produced and foreign films from such areas as Nassau, Canada, Australia and Europe will compose much of this second film festival. Viewing activity along with audience evaluations and discussions will be a part of the upcoming festival next year.

Local film viewers will have the opportunity to involve themselves in the screening and evaluation process through forums held at the island wide national cinemas.

The film festival has the potential to do several good things for the Bahamas.

  • Encourage a presence of the Beauty and potential of the Bahama Islands in Hollywood as a major filming location.
  • Further promote our tourism industry, our growing interest in film production by local producers and our indigenous Bahamian culture.
  • Garner more of the creativity and tenacity of local Bahamians interested in film production and related fields, acting, artistry, makeup, writing, producing, directing etc.

This inaugural film festival has brought much of an appetite for films and film production to the Bahamas with the twist of involving our local film industry to become more actively involved and will act as a forum for local film producers to have their films screened and potentially picked up by major movie distribution companies like Palm Pictures and IFC Films who were well represented at the Bahamas One World Film Festival.

The second running of the Bahamas One World Film Festival is being looked forward to taking place with much anticipation.

Fishing Report

Grouper are schooling again this year. This season will be another win fall for local fishermen in Eleuthera. They expect to catch a major catch this grouper season since the grouper schools produce the best opportunity for them to catch major catches of the tasty fish. Many fishermen will be in the cool waters this time of year until the end of January attempting to capitalize on the opportunity to produce the major portion of their annual income.

This grueling task is a major one since many locals and tourist depend on the local fishermen to supply them with their grouper stocks for the season.

We must continue to monitor the grouper stocks to ensure over fishing of the stocks does not occur.

Eleuthera’s Natural arts and crafts guild started off with a bang y’all. The guild meets each Wednesday and is open to the public Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays from 10am to 2pm.

Last Wednesday was the inaugural day of the new production/sales center on the main highway in Palmetto Point.

Things started of with much preparations and frantic searches for the right materials for our patrons. It was worth the effort to prepare these fantastic pieces of art. Although some members of the guild did not make it out to the opening things went fine and the guild opened to an enormous amount of fan fare and support from the community.

This is just the beginning for the guild this season as plans are under way to increase the services of the non profit guild to teaching art to interested members of the community and to kids who wish to learn the arts.

We hope that this effort goes well and further fulfils the goals of the Eleuthera Natural Arts and Crafts Guild. Stop by today. The guild is located adjacent to Keddies gas station, opposite Klean Co. in Palmetto Point, Eleuthera. See you there.

Fishing Report

The seas have subsided. The weather in Eleuthera is back to normal after a few days of bad windy weather. You can now purchase your supplies of fresh fish from the fish market in Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera once again.

Dread and the boys got another two hundred pound jew fish today. The enormous fish was cleaned and filleted for sale. The jew fish is an a large species of grouper and tastes as great as the regular grouper you eat everyday.

See you at the fish market in Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera today.

Our Canadian friends enjoyed the last few days of nice weather fishing for bonefish in the harbor. The waded out into the water with their poles and gear and enjoyed a few wonderful days of bone fishing and socializing with the local community. Catch and release is the typical method of bone fishing however locals gather the bonefish for friends and special occasions.

Thanksgiving is almost here. The island is filling with tourists. This is typical for this time of year when the cold weather is just about set in the northern cities. Many persons who annually frequent our island will be down and will enjoy the hospitality of our Eleuthera people for another season this year. With so many people enjoying the amenities Eleuthera has to offer one must wonder how crowded can it get? Can Eleuthera with its one two-lane highway accommodate more people? These are some questions for our leaders and people to ponder on the verge of so many investments about to come about in Eleuthera.

There is still much talk of properties being bought up for development. One can only look forward to the coming activity over the next five years and expect the best to come out of it all for the patient people of Eleuthera.

Over all it should be a great time for the island. There is much land clearing and Surveying going on as people move to acquire the last pieces of developable land the island has to offer. Government is being burdened by the requests of local businessmen and inhabitants to be granted the remaining parcels of Crown land available to the government to distribute at their discretion.

There is some controversy as people maneuver for their opportunity to be granted land opportunities from government. Let us hope that cooler heads prevail in it all.

Much love for Eleuthera and its people. Let the good times begin. We have waited more than thirty years for an economic rebirth. There is much talk that it may be taking place in the next several years.

Come see the remaining paradise before these new changes and developments take place. The island is certainly to change its flavor to some degree. Who knows how? Again let cooler heads prevail.

Fishing Report

Fishing is suspended for the next remaining few days since the seas are very rough and unavailable for fishing. You may purchase quantities of fresh frozen fish from fishermen in the community of Tarpum Bay and other communities on the island of Eleuthera.

Weather

Another beautiful day in Eleuthera today. The temperature reached a high of 87 degrees. The skies are clear without any chance of rain today. The moon is full and bright.

It’s still warm. Some people are wondering if summer ever left. The weather patterns of the world are certainly changing and we are experiencing them.

If your in Eleuthera enjoy our weather and have a great day. See you in Eleuthera soon.

News, articles and Poetry

Eleuthera is quiet and bright these days. Its so quiet here you can hear the door close in the next town. You would think at this point that nobody wants to be here. There aren’t many tourist to talk about for this time of year and there isn’t much work activity. Everyone is still in amazement that the island is still here after so many years of neglect.

One can only wait for the future. Eleuthera is poised for some things. There is the development in Windermere said to be going on. There has been no official announcement of employment there. Who knows what will happen.

For now we are just happy to be here and enjoy the sun, sand and sea. It’s the best we can do to be happy.

There is hope for the future but if you ask me its bleak. Nobody knows what’s going on. Projects here and there with grand hopes of being the next big thing but nothing concrete. You can’t eat contracts you know!

So many of them being signed now here and there but still no meaningful activity you can take home to your family for a meal. That kind of thing.

We’ll keep the lights on and keep hoping that something will still happen. Meanwhile we’ll be chillin by the beach at Travellers rest. The grills on these days. Fish frying and pots cookin for a good time. Lots of booze and great hopes for the future.

That’s what’s happening down here in the sunshine. Come down and enjoy it all. You’ll have a great time waiting for life with us. Mean while have a great time where you are. See you in Eleuthera soon.

Fishing Report

Boys still catching fish. Dennis and the boys caught about 1000 yellow tail jacks the other day. That was Sunday. You’d think they had them anchored out there. Lots of grouper and lobster still in the waters. The supply of conch has begun to increase as well. Fishermen are aware of the need for more supplies of conch so they are getting more of them.

If you want fresh, delicious fish come to the docks at Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera whenever you get the chance.

See you at the docks tomorrow.

Due to PC upgrade issues www.tarpumbay.com was not available for the past few days. Our Pc is upgraded now to DSL coralwave service and is now fully operational. Daily postings and services will resume.

Bill and Allison let me hear from you as soon as you are able to due to unscheduled upgrading I have misplaced your email. Hear from you and other friends soon.

Lots of fish being caught at the docks these days. Dread and the boys caught a big jew fish. The jew fish is family to the grouper. The entire fish weighed around two hundred and fifty pounds and yielded a tremendous amount of filet fish for customers yesterday.

Our friends from Canada are down in the Harbour at Tarpum Bay Bone Fishing. They brought friends this year with them. They are enjoying their time wading up waist high in the warm waters and tossing out their lines and rods for the delightful, fun catch. They are certainly having a great time at the shore in Tarpum Bay. The best thing is that they are doing all this for free. Since they’ve been coming down for the past four years they know all the Bone fish spots on the island and visit them independently without a guide. They are having a tremendous time. Hooray to our friends from Canada in the great cold north this time of year. We’re having a wonderful time in the sun in Tarpum Bay.

Fishing Report

Fishing continues in Tarpum Bay. The groupers schooling is the next biggest expectation by the fishermen of Tarpum Bay and they will be watching the Atlantic seas for this annual occurance. It’s a time for lots and lots of grouper. A fisherman can earn as much as 25% of his income annually at this time. The grouper schoolings last over a three month period during the coldest times of the year in the Bahamas Atlantic ocean.  Its and important fishing occurance.

See you at the docks for fresh Lobster, grouper, crab and conch next time your in Tarpum Bay.

Balmy winter breezes abound in Tarpum Bay and Eleuthera today. The temperature dropped down to a cool 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The entire day was overcast with only an occasional rain. This is an example of our winter weather and is typical for this time of year. It was a great day for the outdoors or touring Eleuthera today and not such a good day for the sun.

A Tourist’s Halloween In Eleuthera

What to my surprise should happen

When I appeared upon the scene

Superman and Frankenstein in the midst of Halloween

I thought that I’d gone foreign

And left my home alright

But what should appear to me its Halloween tonight

A night for peas and rice and lobster

Fritters and cracked conch too

But if you know the surprise in me

It would happen to you too

I came to the Bahamas

To see the sand and sea

The sunshine in this paradise

As I’d seen on TV

Tonight to my surprise I jumped

As they crowded at the door

“Trick or Treat, Its Halloween good miss”

In Eleuthera by the shore

Tonight is the annual Anti-halloween Christian/religious program in Tarpum Bay put on by the Church of God. Pastor Brenville personally from a religious point of view chooses to promote his Christianity and religion instead of promoting the almost pagan holiday of Halloween.

The pastor vehemently opposes the holiday and chooses to share his Christian principals with the general public instead of allowing it to go by without some opposition.

Many people on Eleuthera look foreword to the event, which is well attended tonight. There will be music, skits, preaching, and gift bags for the children.

This is an opportunity for the church and pastor Brenville to share their message of Christianity and they are greatly appreciated by the community for their efforts to share a positive and a good message in our trying times.

If your looking for a positive message see you in the middle of town on Front street Tarpum Bay just opposite sister Allen’s store.

Fishing Report

Fishing is temporarily suspended due to bad weather. In a few days when the seasonal blowing has subsided fresh daily catches of fish will be available for sale at the docks at Tarapum Bay and other venues along the island where fish are sold.

For now the only places to buy fish are from vendors who have supplies frozen in their freezers. This is an alternative option for those wishing to have fresh fish caught only a few days ago.

Beautiful Morning

By George major

Morning crept in on the Bay

Slow seas toss tenaciously with their tide

Early rising fishermen are already out to sea

Dread and Jay stand in a fixed position

Mending the nets for a better days catch

You can see the beach of for miles

As it curves with the island

So clean, clear and bright

As the islands green lies in the distance

Dotted by little indicators of mans existence

The rain in the distance showers its prey

Grey skies rage above with a wet threat

I’ll do my duty this day

I’ll enjoy the sun and surround myself with pleasantries

I love the world and the people in it

This day a promise for the quiet Island people

Do not allow the day to overwhelm you

Its solace and its beauty are astounding

School children gather by the post office for bussing

I am the better off having experience this coming of the day

As Halloween approaches tomorrow the children are ready to celebrate. Our Halloween is the traditional one with costumes and candy for the trick or treaters.

Guy Fox celebrations are being held on November 5th. You’ll remember guy fox as the man who tried to blow up the British parliament in the eighteen hundreds. This holiday is a traditional one in Eleuthera and the Bahamas as it is in the entire British commonwealth.

Fishing Report

Several fishermen have left the docks early this morning before the sun rose. They are expecting better catches as the weather cools. Netting is the order of the day as many of these fishermen have as their goal to supply the village with fresh frying fish. Jack and snappers more likely today. Some grouper and lobster will be at the docks later this afternoon as well.

See you at the docks in Tarpum Bay today.
