in Eleuthera is calm and cool. The temperature is a
wonderful 74 degrees fahrenheit. Our skies are
clear and filled with the evening stars.
News,
articles and poetry
Sorry
guys, you haven’t heard from me for a while. I’ve been busy working on an
upcoming development project for the island of Eleuthera.
There have been a few delays and setbacks but things are getting underway and
by the middle of March things should be in full swing.
Other
than that not much has been happening on the island. The economy and people
have been quiet contemplating their future. According to local inhabitants
the future looks scary.
We
have to hope that the proposed projects announced for the island will
actually take place.
Right
now only one of those projects is about to take place.
Stay
tuned for more daily news from Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera.
Fishing
report
Fishing
has resumed this month as the ban on grouper fishing has been lifted.
Fishermen are doing quite well catching much grouper. The ban had an overall
positive effect on the grouper population and massive amounts of grouper are
being harvested by our fishermen here in Tarpum Bay
daily.
See
you in Tarpum Bay for your supplies of fresh fish
products.

an uneventful week here in Tarpum Bay and Eleuthera the South Eleuthera
member of parliament, Mr. Oswald Ingraham held his
annual Christmas party for the community. All were invited to attend.
It
was a good time of eating, and dancing for all at Ingraham’s
Beach Inn. Alcoholic beverages were not served in accordance with the Ministers
religious beliefs.

News,

In
the news today another son of Tarpum Bay has passed
on. The humorous citizen and impersonator of Cassius Clay or Mahummid Ali, generally known as Mr. Gladstone Morley has died. He was found in his home deceased last evening.
From the position Mr. Morley was sitting he was obviously watching TV at the
time of his death since the Television was still on several days after his
death.
A
number of people gathered at Mr. Morleys home in
hopes of saying their last good byes as the police investigated the matter
and prepared him for an autopsy and shipment to Nassau to the government
morgue. No foul play is suspected; this is a routine matter in such sudden
death cases.
Fishing
Report
Little
fishing is going on in Tarpum Bay until the
Caribbean seas subside. You can purchase quantities of frozen Grouper in Tarpum Bay at selected fish houses while supplies last.
Remember
that the grouper fishing is closed until February 1st of this
year.

News,
Articles and Poetry
Life
sometimes has its great moments.
After
a hard days work when some milestone has been arrived at, some challenges you
had previously overcome one walks out on the world in the evening with a
sense of accomplishment.
Upon
going out this evening I encountered a number of people throughout the
village who wanted to talk about the topical issues of the day. One such
villager is upset because the town planning committee a few years ago took
his property, which he was in the process of developing into a mini
condominium resort and turned it into and extension of the already existing
graveyard. He cursed some senior members of the community for being so
jealous and greedy for having done this to him.
He’s
somewhat bitter with the upcoming economic development and says that it will
not bring the kind of economic prosperity the community really needs. How can
the government of the Bahamas take the peoples land resources, sell it to
foreigners for pennies and in the end all the community gets out of it is a
few menial jobs. How can everyone settle for being gardeners, maids and
waitresses? This type of development plan he says is not attractive and
appealing to him.
I
agreed with his fundamental philosophy but insisted that at least there will
be some benefits for the community. Rather than being without jobs at all
there will be some meaningful employment for the local population.
My
colleague assured me that personally he would be happier if there was no
development. At least, he said, he would be able to keep the land and do what
ever he could to survive. He thought he might be better off owning the land
and planting oranges or other types of citrus.
I
understood his point of view and shared the philosophy with him that
government should instead of selling for pennies to foreigners perhaps they
can give large loans to Bahamian businessmen with good business practices and
a good business plan in order for them to inherit and develop the land instead
of giving it away to foreigners.
He
agreed with my point of view.
We
parted company having dialogued and expressed our points of view entirely
understanding that our best interests were the plight and the best interest
of our indigenous people.
We
agreed that governments interest in the matter was purely political and in
the best interest of winning the votes of the countries menial labor force.
This
approach by government accomplishes something but does not get to the real
root of the problem. It does not allow the average citizen their equal right
in our country to maximize and realize their potential as a citizen but
rather enslaves them into a life of servitude and dissatisfaction. They don’t
even realize the potential or see the issues being clouded
by the pressing need to work and pay their bills clouds their judgment
in the matter.
So
at least we left Travellers rest agreeing on
something. This upcoming development in the Island of Eleuthera
would not be the end to all of our problems. Although massive these
investments into the many millions will primarily benefit the Foreign
investor and leave the local populous without the benefit of his own land.
Why
can’t our government get to the root of the problem before all of the land is
sold out and given away entirely to the foreigners leaving our local populous
more bankrupt than before? Why will they not empower each Bahamian landowner
with the finances to both build and own their own hotels rather than
providing them with a lifetime of menial labor in the hot fields of the
modern plantation.
The
final solution has not yet come. Carry on and think Bahamian government. What
is your real purpose for which you serve the Bahamian people? Lets get to the real root of the problem and find a better
solution than servitude and political blindness There has to be a better way.

News,
Articles and Poetry
This
is the first week into the new year. 2004 promises to be an exceptionally
bright one in comparison for Eleuthera. Our prime
Minister has predicted over national media for us that over the next few
years Eleuthera will be the recipient of more than
two billion dollars of private investment in the way of hotels, marinas and
condominium resort.
These
investments include restaurants, golf courses and many other amenities for
the elite tourist of our times.
We
are poised and ready to receive them.
2004
holds bright hopes for our lovely tropical island.
Eleuthera, over the past thirty years has been the
recipient of not more than thirty million dollars of investment and
government funding and as a result has suffered a great loss of population
and morale. Many of our people now populate world cities in the northern
hemisphere and we are at a loss because of their forced relocation. For we
have lost our brothers and sisters, cousins and families because of a lack of
a suitable national development plan.
The
investments announced by government are a way to repair that historic damage
and set Eleuthera and the rest of the Bahamas on a
new track to a new beginning of future hope and prosperity. However the fact
remains that we have lost much of our energetic, young people. Our doctors,
lawyers, skilled workers no longer reside in Eleuthera.
We have most likely because of our national lopsided investment policies lost
them forever to the world and their personal dreams for fulfillment, careers
and education have gone with them. They are new bright citizens of other
countries.
We
have suffered great losses in recent years. These losses date way back to the
past and since the inception of our modern society we have followed this
trend. Hemorrhaging from the inside. Literally cutting off our blood line and
casting out our talented few young people who are the backbone and the
promise for future growth in this society.
New
days are about to come. Long awaited promises are near and our people are
both skeptical and anxious to begin a new future into that promising forever.
Let us see how the year progresses and how it ends.
This
year is a watershed for both social and political promise in Eleuthera and we are critical of the outcome. We cannot
in our future continue to suffer these essential and great losses of our
people. People are too important to our society and growth to simply because
of investment polieice cast them out into the world
in a frantic search for living, careers and education. The Bahamas is too
grown and intelligent a society for such modern tragedies of social pandemic
loss.
It
is our obligation as a people to see that the future of the Bahamas, in its
people, remains in the Bahamas in order to generate growth and prosperity for
themselves and the remainder of the Bahamas.
If
two billion dollars, as promised, of growth is to come to Eleuthera
we need to assure the people of Eleuthera that this
investment is an investment in their future and the plight of their society.
We
must restructure national development policies to tailor the needs of such
out island societies as Eleuthera and make a
national commitment and promise to the people of Eleuthera
and other out islands that without prior selfish forethought the economic and
social future of such islands which were at stake will forevermore be
re-strengthened and restructured to maintain their unique, tropical family
and social structures thus maintaining them in harmony with the remainder of
the western world.
This
is our opportunity, our chance to live the meaningful lives and make the
contributions demanded of us by the modern world. We must learn to stay at
home and build from within making a concerted contribution to the modern
world from within our borders and homes.
This
is my hope for the future of Eleuthera in the year
of our lord 2004.

Fishing
Report
New
year, New rules is typical of what is happening in
the Bahamas these days. All over the country people are realizing their
commitment to the future growth of the Bahamas. They are realizing that that
growth extends even beyond themselves and their own existence into the world
and existence of their offspring. This even extends into the fishing
industry. Thus during the month of January a ban has been placed on the
harvesting of the Nassau grouper which spawns and mated during this time of
year. January 2004 saw the new initiative by the agricultural department of
the Bahamian government. While this is seen by many local fishermen to be a
detriment to their future as fishermen many are taking a more positive view
and regrouping making plans to expand and rely on more traditional methods of
fishing to earn a living.
Today
bright and early more than ten groups of fishermen from the village of Tarpum Bay arose early and set out for the fishing
grounds in search of a catch.
To
replace the much sought after Nassau grouper by their customers they will be harvesting
instead the conch, lobster and many varieties of smaller frying fish. Many of
the boats are equipped with fishing nets that allow them to catch many other
species of pan frying fish like red snapper, jacks, small tuna and other
varieties of fish species.
Because
of the restructuring and the hard work of these fishermen Eleutherians
and visitors will still be able to enjoy fresh fish.
Fresh
local fish is relied on as an alternative, healthy food source and the
resourcefulness of our local fishermen give us confidence that we will be
able to purchase and consume continued quantities of fish products from their
vessels.
See
you at the docks at Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera,
Bahamas for purchasing your supply of fresh Bahamian seafood today.
