Information on how to move arround Mexico City including Taxis, Subway and car rentals |
TAXI |
Upon arrival please use only authorized airport taxis. Refer to the airport page for more information. Besides airport taxis there are three types of taxies in Mexico City: Turistic Taxi: Usually found at every hotel. This taxis are larger vehicles (no sub compacts) with air conditioning and english speaking drivers. If you do not want to take a Bus Tour but you want someone to drive you arround with good knowledge of the city´s landmarks this is the way to go. You can recognise this taxi by the license plate which includes one letter and five numbers (example: A02483). This taxis do not have a "TAXI" nor "CAB" sign on the door nor are painted in any specific color. This Taxis are found outside hotels, you WILL NOT CATCH ANY ELSEWHERE. Radio Taxi: This taxi is requested by phone and paged by radio in such way that the closest to your location will answer your call. The number to dial is 5519-7690. This taxis are safe and reliable. Street Taxi: You will recognize this taxis because they are mostly green old VW Beetles and (that will accept up to three passengers) and you can find them virtually everywhere. This Taxis use meters and their fares are very low, however, I recommend this as the last resource due to confort and |
SUBWAY |
The subway sistem in Mexico City is safe, silent, punctual and unexpensive, I consider
it the best way for locals (like me) to move arround, however, there´s one
disadvantage: It moves more than 4.2 Million people every day!!!. The Subway Systems (calles "Metro") covers most of the city and it costs only $1.50 pesos (arround 20 cents of a dolar -subsidised, of course-). It is quite simillar to the subway in Paris, France (if not identicall) but locally made and with an excellent safety record. If you plan to use Subway remember that you can expect it to be packed between 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM and between 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. I strongly suggest to avoid it during such hours and take a Radio or Turistic Taxi (expect traffic at thoese hours too). Refer to the Maps page to find the nearest subway station to your destination. You can recognize the subway station (on the map) by a red sign and the station name in red: At the Metro web page you can find a Subway map in pdf format. |

CAR RENTAL |
Unless you are a great driver I do not recomend driving in Mexico City. Remember
that this is the most populated city in the World and you will find traffic and
parking problems and you have good chance of getting lost. If you decide to rent a car I strongly suggest to get an accurate map in advance (not one of thoese hard-to-fold hotel maps). You can buy one online at Guia Roji Store. There are several local car rental companies at the airport or at Hotel Lobbys or you can choose Avis, Hertz, Dollar or Budget (among others). |
