How dangerous is Mexico City? Has crime increased or decreased? |
Every large city has its problems, Mexico City is no exception. Crime in the city
has not increased from 1999 to 2001 (or at least statistics say so) and I´ve heard
less of it lately. Thats good news, however, extra precautions will not hurt. Follow some easy steps towards safety: 1.- Whenever possible use Turistic Taxis or Radio Taxis 2.- Do not carry all your money, carry only as much as you require and leave the rest of it at the safety deposit box in your hotel. 3.- If you are going to a "non turistic" part of the city make sure that you can get transportation back to your hotel. 4.- If you drive keep your windows up. But really...how bad is it...? Lets put it this way... I have been robbed 2 times in my life, one in Mexico City and one in Chicago, of course, I spend 99% of my time in Mexico City, not in Chicago. In summary: Tourists are alwase a target for crime, but I do not consider Mexico City worse than Chicago and I feel much safer here than in Miami. |
