Program Plan
Master of Arts in Education with a focus on Literacy

Since I went to MSU for my undergraduate work, I also earned my certification through their yearlong internship program following my graduation. Interning in a suburban Lansing school with very diverse learners was very beneficial to me as I experienced teaching gifted students, learning disabled students, and ESL students in a 3rd grade classroom. During this year, I participated in the following classes: TE 501 (Internship Teaching Diverse Learners I), TE 801 (Professional Roles & Teaching Practice I), and TE 802 (Reflection & Inquiry Teaching Practice I) in the fall of 2001. During the spring of 2002 I took: TE 502 (Internship Teaching Diverse Learners II), TE 803 (Professional Roles & Teaching Practices II), and TE 804 (Reflection & Inquiry Teaching Practice II). TE 801 & 802 were my internship classes where I met with my field instructor and fellow interns on a regular basis to discuss day-to-day issues and special topics. The other four classes each focused on a different academic area: language arts, math, science, and social studies. The classes correlated with my internship so in addition to learning about each topic, I created units, lesson plans, and projects to actually use in the 3rd grade classroom where I had my internship. I was fortunate in that 3 of these classes transferred into my M.A. in literacy education program.

TE 891: Special Topics in Teaching Curriculum & Schooling
Spring 2006
Professor: Conley
This was an inquiry based course where I was able to learn about how to best teach struggling and "At-Risk" readers reading comprehension strategies using best practices. I used a classroom action research project and wrote an article which I later submitted to the International Reading Association's publication "The Reading Teacher." It was denied, but a good experience in the end!

This course allowed me to learn about how I can implement technology into the classroom with integrated learning. It also aided in my development of website design.

TE 843: Reading, Writing and Reasoning
Summer 2006
Professor: Conley
Taking this course made me more aware of how to implement teaching reading across all of the content areas. I also was able to choose a topic to research, and I chose looping since I was in the summer between two years of teaching the same class. I was able to gain some insight on the looping experience which I was able to use the following year in my classroom.

TE 836: Awards and Classics of Children's Literature
Spring 2007
Professor: Apol
I had never taken a children's literature course during my undergraduate years and was delighted to do so. I was able to learn about many children's books and awards that I had not previously heard of. I also had the opportunity to compare the famous classic Little Women to both a 1930s version and late 20th century versions of the film. In addition, I participated in a book club experience where we compared two novels (Peter Pan, and Tuck Everlasting.

EAD 845: School Restructuring
Spring 2007
Professor: Smith
As a member of my school's "school improvement team," I wanted to be comfortable and able to bring more to our meetings. EAD 845 gave me a better understanding of how school administration, school restructuring in particular work. Although I have no intention of ever becoming an administrator, the class was an enlightening experience as we read, wrote, and discussed the many issues school administrators of today face, no matter the level.
