Why the Jewish Legion is the best response In the more then 2 years of violence and terror waged against Jewish civilians in Yesha and the rest of Israel, many lessons have been learned, difficult lessons, that have come at the expense of far too many lives. This experience which has shown us what works and what has failed, what should be invested in and what should be scrapped, is exactly what the Jewish Legion continues to do, as it assesses what steps and measures will be most beneficial in preventing future massacres of Jewish civilians in their communities. FRT vs. Jewish Legion Communities in Yesha, especially in areas known as targets, usually small rural settlements that are surrounded by Arab villages (which serve as springboards for attacks), have created or expanded their First Response Teams. These civilian manned auxiliary security teams are composed of regular people, community members, fathers, people with jobs, with priorities, who on top of all, must also be responsible for securing and responding to often undefended areas and security holes and breaches that these towns, like all towns, have. |

The Jewish Legion on the other hand does not have the problems that are related with the FRT, as it is composed primarily of volunteers whose primary responsibility is of defending and securing settlements. Unlike those who have families and are working most of the day, and can hardly give of their time to training and carrying out actual security patrols and manning observation points, the Jewish Legion raison d’etre is exactly this. The Jewish Legion only months after its creation in April has established a base of operations in Kfar Tapuach (click here for more information on Tapuach) where volunteers go through training for their various functions, as well as are housed. In order to expand and cover other settlements funding must be raised, as the cost of moving into other areas is significant, as housing, meals, and other necessities need to be duplicated. Immediate Goals: The Jewish Legion is right now in the process of doubling its (foreign) volunteers to 62 people, half of which will be deployed in 4 additional settlements, in teams of eight accompanied by well a trained patrol dog and handlers. Purchasing of the specialized guard dogs (which average between 3000-6000 Can.), which has earned it, the respect (And has been adopted by several organizations, and even the Border Guard) of others, is also vital to stopping terror, as the number of dogs must be doubled from the current dozen dogs that are already deployed in various areas. This accompanied by the creation of a Quick Reaction Team of much higher caliber then that of settlements’ FRT, which will consist of a K9-unit, soldiers and medics, all traveling in an armored van, which can get into areas with gunfire and out. (In previous terror attacks, victims wounded by terror could not be treated or removed, as no armored vehicle was on hand, causing some to bleed to death). This team, will be involved in repeated training and drills, specializing in scenarios that have occurred in the past, and could be on call much quicker then IDF forces, who must be brought in from further away. These vital steps must be taken quickly in order to prevent a further wave of bloodshed. With the completion of the security fence in the near future, and as the US nears closer to a war with Iraq, and Israel nears closer to conflagration with Hezbollah terrorists in the north, IDF forces are expected to further reduce their presence in and around Yesha communities. This will cause an increase in terror, unless we can bring the volunteers to strengthen settlements and their defenses.
