PEP Training for Residents: Enterprising Communities.

On 6th - 8th February 2004 John Bigwood: a member of BARA (Brougham Area Residents Association) of Dyke house Hartlepool, Rolf Parvin: a member of RAP (Residents Access Point Steering Group) of Chatham Road, Dyke House Hartlepool, Eddie Price: Chatham Road Residents Resource Centre Manager and Community Officer, Pat White a member of BARA (Brougham Area Residents Association) of Dyke house Hartlepool and Angela Fusco: Chatham Road Residents Resource Centre Secretary went to the Countyard Marriott Hotel in Rotherham to join another 8 residents of other communities throughout the UK for a PEP training weekend seminar.

The subject of the training event was 'Enterprising Communities'. We arrived for registration at 4pm Friday afternoon. The programme consisted of (6.00pm) Introduction to the seminar, which involved reviewing our local community economy.

The next morning Saturday 7th February the first session of the programme started at 9.30am which consisted of Economic Initiatives and Jargon Busting. 10.00am - 11.30am: Making the most of resources, Credit Unions and LETS (Local Exchange and Trading Schemes) 12.00 noon - 1.00pm lunch: Connecting with the wider enviroment (a) Local labour schemes, (b) Careers advice and placement, (c) Training for local opportunities, (d) The 'one stop shop'.

After Lunch Saturday 2.15pm
The seminar continued with a session entitled 'Building Bridges' (a) Intermediate labour markets, (b) Residents Services Organisations. and 4.00pm - 6.00pm Community Business and a introduction to Development Trusts.

The next session proceeded Sunday morning 10.00am. This session was entitled 'Putting it all together': a local economic strategy exercise' which involved group work and presentations of action plans. 12.45pm one final session to review the seminar and offer/recieve feed back.

PEP Training for Residents: Enterprising Communities seminar conclusion

Overall the programme was most informative and enjoyable. The trainers (Emma Sneyd, David Gibson and Noreen Raja were very friendly, knowledgable, enthusiastic and always willing to answer and help us (the trainees) with any queries or problems we had with the programme and the tasks we were given.
