Jesmond Road Primary School (Year 5 Project) EVERETT NEWS... Everett Street Alley - A Danger To Children! Letters to the Editor continued...

Dear Editor,
Our class at Jesmond Road School want to protest about the disgusting mess in Everett Street's back alley, which we have to walk along every day to reach our dining hall.

Did you Know that:
* There is alot of graffiti and paint near our dining hall.
* There is litter whereever you walk, for example cardboard and sweet wrappers.
* There is fly tipping, for example mattresses, microwaves, ovens, broken bikes and televisions (thats's not all!).
There is also vandalism. the residents have put barbed wire and glass on top of their walls. They also have burglar alarms plus burglar grease on the lampposts.
* The traffic is atrocious - CHILDREN NEARLY GET RAN OVER.* The bib men never take any care, so on Mondays especially there is rubbish all over the floor.

Another reason we are writing to you is the dangers that are in the alley for example, dog dirt, glass (smashed and full bottles), needles, holes and an uneven surface.

We hope that you can sort out this disgusting mess because the twelve classes that have to walk along it and the people who live there will be a lot happier.

Yours sincerely,
Rachael Iley

Questionnaires

The following questionnaire about the alley was given to K.S.2. children and then analysed.

Miss Pugh's class have been trying to sort out the mess in Everett Street's back alley, which you have to walk along every day to reach the dinning hall. We want you to help us by answering the following questions:

What have you seen on the walls?

What have you seen on the ground?

What have you seen on the car park floor?

What is the ground like you have to walk along?

What do you think could be done to make it better for everyone?

POSTERS, FUTURE PLANS and COMMUNITY AWARENESS AWARD.

Jesmond Road Primary School children designed posters with the theme "Keep children out of danger".

Although the designs are not represented here, the interesting topics read as such:

IF YOU DUMP THIS (drawn of unwanted articles such as old washing machines etc.) YOU WILL BE FINED! - keep Jesmond Road Children Safe. No Fly Tipping.

Pick up dog dirt. Dont fly tip in our back alley. Don't leave rubbish on the floor. Don't spray our walls. Take your litter home!

The children also designed future plans for Everett Street back alley. The plans included CCTV cameras, bird houses, plant and flower beds, sitting benches and a pond. For all their concern and hard work the children have received the Community Awareness Award.
