Most Salmon anglers today fish with hair wing flies. It is generally accepted that the first hair wing Salmon flies were created in north America. Though it is possible that some Scottish ghillie may have tied a few hairs from his dog onto a hook and caught a fish with such a fly. Hair wings can be tied on conventional hooks, doubles and trebles. Some north American patterns are usually long shank streamer hooks. Traditionalist's have now come to accept the hair wing fly. Apart from its obvious effectiveness in taking fish these can be made a fraction of the cost of a fully dressed fly. The traditional feather wing flies can be converted to hair wing.
