Dry flies are designed to be fished on the surface of the water. This type of pattern is created to imitate a number of insects.
Various aquatic insects find themselves on the water either by choice or accident . They are usually blown by the wind or can fall from over hanging vegetation.
All these are embraced by the trout which include the Beetle, Grasshoppers and the Black Gnat (above).
The majority of Dry flies are tied on up eyed hooks.
This simple pattern below is one of the easiest to tie.

Thread. Primrose
Tail. None (sometimes a tail is
added for buoyancy)
Body. Waxed primrose silk to produce
a shade of olive
Rib. Gold wire
Hackle. Greenwell (or light furnace)
Wing. Blackbird or substitute
